2 This presentation will provide an overview of 2 out of the 3 requirements needed to earn a degree at Cal State L.A. Students should meet with an advisor in their major to discuss the major requirements. General Education Major (meet with major advisor) University

3 General Education (GE) requirements are composed of the following 2 requirements: General Education 1.60 units of Lower Division GE units of Upper Division Theme Major University

4 General Education 1.60 units of Lower Division GE units of Upper Division Theme University Major Block A 12 units American Institutions 8 units Block B 8 or 12 units Block C 8 or 12 units Block D 8 or 12 units Block E 4 units 60 units of Lower Division GE Students will complete a specified number of units in each block above, depending on major. The following 10 slides provide an explanation of how many units a student completes per block.

5 Block A: The basic subjects in Block A have 4 essential skills: 1. College writing (A1) 2. Oral presentation (A2) 3. Critical thinking (A3) 4. College math (A4). Students must complete a class from each discipline. Classes in this block must be passed with a C" or better. A C-" does not fulfill this requirement. Must complete by 45 units. Total 16 units from this block.

6 Math 100: Introduction to College Mathematics Math 102: College Algebra Econ/Math 109: Quantitative Reasoning with Statistics For majors that require it - MATH 104A: Precalculus Students should meet with their advisor to find out which math to take for their major.

7 American Institutions Block: 1. 8 units required (2 courses): 1 course from US History (either HIST 202A or HIST 202B) POLS 150

9 The next slide has a list of majors offered at Cal State L.A. Find your major on the slide. Determine if you are a 1) Natural Science, 2) Social Science, or 3) Humanities based major. The number of units required for Blocks B- D is listed next to the discipline you fall under.

11 Block B: 8 or 12 units(2 or 3 courses): depending on major Some majors take specific science courses because the course will double count for GE and major. Examples: Exercise Science: BIOL 200A (B1) and PHYS 101 (B2) Nursing: BIOL 200A (B1) and CHEM 151 (B2)

12 Block C: 8 or 12 units(2 or 3 courses), depending on major. Students must complete courses from 2 or 3 different areas (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5), depending on major. *Diversity Requirement : Students must complete 2 courses certified as diversity courses. Course is identified with a lower case d in parenthesis (d).

13 Block D: 8 or 12 units(2 or 3 courses), depending on major. Students must complete courses from 2 or 3 different disciplines. *Diversity course(s) can be taken from this block as well.

14 Block E: 4 Units (1 course) By completing the IHE course (HHS 101) the Block E requirement will be met. Some majors require taking additional courses from block E.

15 General Education 1.60 units of Lower Division GE units of Upper Division Theme University Major Requirement:12 unit upper division theme 3 interrelated courses on the same topic. Students must complete 1 course from each area within 1 theme: Natural Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Prerequisite: completion of Block A and at least 1 course from blocks B, C, and D. Students may meet the GE diversity requirement (2 courses) by completing courses designated as diversity courses at the lower or upper division level from among courses satisfying the GE requirement.

16 Select theme. Complete 1 course from each area within the theme of choice: Natural Science & Mathematics, Social Sciences, & Humanities. Courses used to meet upper division GE requirements may not be used for a major requirement. In this example, student selected Theme A

17 University requirements are composed of the following 6 requirements: General Education University 1. Introduction to Higher Education 2. Diversity Courses 3. English Writing Proficiency Exam (WPE) 5. Units in Residence 6. GPA Major

18 This requirement must be completed no later than the second quarter of attendance at Cal State L.A. Otherwise, a hold is placed on the student s record. HHS 101 will meet this requirement and the Block E requirement. This course introduces students to the following aspects of the University: History, structure, policies and procedures, faculty expectations, resources and skills necessary for success, and content specific to disciplines in the college that offers the student s major.

19 Requirement - 2 diversity courses. Diversity course is identified with an italicized lower case d in parentheses before the course listing, i.e. (d) CHS 201. May be taken in the Lower Division GE courses or the Upper Division GE Theme. Transfer courses are counted as diversity courses only if articulated with Cal State L.A. courses.

20 English 102 must be passed with a grade of C or higher. Prerequisite is English 101, which also must be passed with a grade of C or higher.

21 Perquisite: grade of C or higher in ENGL 102. Registration is through GET (UNIV 400). After 2 failed attempts, student must register for UNIV 401 (4 unit course). NOTE: students may skip the WPE exam and take the UNIV 401 course. For help in enrolling, students should contact the University Testing Center. For help in preparing for the exam, students should contact the University Writing Center.
