1 Say Yes Buffalo signals a new day and a oncein-a-generation opportunity to create a brighter future for the Western New York (WNY) region through investing in the City of Buffalo s young people. Say Yes Buffalo is a landmark collaboration that brings all sectors of the community together to provide holistic, year-round support to Buffalo Public School District students throughout their K- years and beyond. Beginning with the 0- school year, Say Yes Buffalo began implementing support services to address academic, social/emotional and health needs of students in the Buffalo Public School District. Services currently available include: Scholarships (funded by local, private sources) to attend vocational and/or and -year colleges (scholarships are available to graduates of public and charter schools in the city of Buffalo) Student monitoring system to ensure students are on track to thrive and successfully graduate high school Additional services are being rolled out to one-quarter of the District s public schools each year for the next three years. These services include: On-site Say Yes staff person (Site Facilitator) devoted to student support After school and summer enrichment programming College coaching Mentoring programs Tutoring and academic assistance Legal assistance for families Health and wellness supports Services will be rolled out to schools depending on what Say Yes Cohort they have been assigned to. Say Yes and its partners divided the Buffalo Public Schools into four Cohorts, with each including equal representation of high, mid and low performing schools. Inside is more information about Say Yes Buffalo Scholarships and Grants, as well as when specific Say Yes Buffalo services are coming to a specific school.
2 Scholarships & Grants Of all the supports available through Say Yes Buffalo, the promise of free money for tuition at SUNY/ CUNY and private partner schools is perhaps the most critical motivating factor for students to stay the course and graduate from high school. Say Yes Buffalo Scholarships are locally funded by private individuals, families, businesses and organizations. Eligibility Say Yes scholarships and grants are available to students who:. Reside in the city of Buffalo.. At minimum, complete grades 9-, in consecutive years, at a public or charter school in the city of Buffalo.. Graduate from a public or charter school in Buffalo, beginning in June 0.. Enroll full-time at a Say Yes college within one year of high school graduation (see www. sayyesbuffalo.org for a list of partner colleges). 5. Apply for all federal and state financial aid programs (FAFSA and TAP). Tuition Scholarship to SUNY/CUNY schools Say Yes covers tuition costs that remain after New York State Tap, Federal Pell awards and institutional aid are factored in. Tuition scholarships to SUNY/CUNY schools are awarded to eligible students regardless of family income and the amount of each is determined by the number of consecutive years a student has attended a public or charter school in Buffalo. Grades in a row student has attended public/ charter school in Buffalo K-, or -,5 or 6-7,8 or 9- % of SUNY/CUNY Tuition Say Yes will pay for 00% 95% 80% 65% Opportunity Grant SUNY/CUNY schools only For students attending SUNY/CUNY schools and living on campus, Say Yes may provide an additional grant of up to $,000 that can be used toward nontuition expenses such as books, fees, and room and board. Tuition Scholarship at private partner schools Say Yes private partner schools provide full tuition scholarships to students from families with incomes of less than $75,000 (with some exceptions). These scholarhips cover tuition only and do not include costs for room and board, books, and other fees. For more details see Choice Grant to private partner schools Students from families whose income is more than $75,000 who are attending a Say Yes private partner school may receive the Choice Grant. This grant offers up to $5,000 per year toward their tuition. Awards are determined by the difference between financial aid and the cost of full-time tuition. Choice Grants, when combined with state, federal, and institutional grants and scholarships, are not to exceed the cost of full-time tuition. The requirements and terms of the Say Yes Buffalo scholarship and supports program may be subject to change in the future.
3 Private Partner Schools A group of private institutions are expanding the Say Yes Buffalo program through their commitment to Say Yes Buffalo. The following schools have agreed to cover any tuition costs above what is covered through Pell and Tap grants for those Say Yes Scholars that meet their admission criteria and have family income of $75,000* or less (in most cases). At a minimum, students must have completed grades 9- at a public or charter school located in the city of Buffalo and be a resident of the city of Buffalo, to be eligible.
