16 08 Management MAde in GerMAny The Land of Entrepreneurs and Inventors Germany is not only the land of poets and philosophers, it is also the home of a highly efficient and productive economy. For many years now, Germany has successfully held its ground as export world champion, and its gross domestic product ranks no. 3 in the world economy. More than a thousand companies in Germany hold at least a top three position in the world, which is more than any other comparable economy has to offer (Financial Times Germany, 18 th November 2005). There are a variety of reasons why Germany is so successful. One of the most important ones is the close cooperation between universities, international research institutes and industries in institutionalized competence networks or clusters. One of six global innovation leaders (Source: European Scoreboard), Germany is European Champion with by far the most patent applications of all European countries (in 2009, 18 % of all patent applications worldwide according to the European Patent Office). Many German inven tions have changed the world or could you imagine the world without printed books, cars, computers, chip cards, or the mp3-format? Doing an MBA at Mannheim Business School takes you direct ly into the heart of Germany s business. The business contacts you will be forming at many opportunities during your MBA year and the excellent re pu tation of Mannheim graduates will be decisive stepping stones for your future career. The Mannheim Region Mannheim and its region offer you more than an outstanding business faculty alone. The Mannheim Region also stands out due to its tight network of science, research and production, subcontracting and services, as well as the proximity to important markets. Many global players have their German or European headquarters here, such as Daimler, Porsche, SAP, Roche Diagnostics, BASF, Bilfinger Berger, ABB, IBM or Michelin, resulting in a high density of over 100,000 companies. In its 400 year history, Mannheim and its inhabitants have shown a high degree of inventive spirit: Mannheim s amazed public witnessed the presentation of the first operating auto mobile, constructed by Carl Friedrich Benz. Resourceful Mann heimers also invented the bicycle, the electric driven elevator and the first tractor for farming machines. In Mannheim, the first rocket driven airplane took to the air, and ABB developed the polyphase generator used in ICE-highspeed trains. 17 Studying in three European countries remarkably broadened my mind. In our international study and project groups, we thoroughly trained how to work with a diverse team, developing strong interpersonal skills that are so important in my everyday working life. I enjoyed the very international atmosphere and learned more about cultural specialties regarding living and working styles than I had ever learned before. During the 12 month program, it was easy to develop new friendships and a global network which will last a lifetime. Maike Schuh-Klaeren, Heraeus Inc., New York Jonathon Peter Findlay, A.T. Kearney, Toronto The MBA has broadened my professional horizon. It has not only strengthened my strategic thinking and problem solving skills but also gave me the knowledge and the right tools to switch my career from a specialist in tax law to general management. The MBA gave me a fundament which is of essence for my new job in New York. Maike Schuh-Klaeren studied law and specialized in tax law. She started her career as attorney-at-law at KPMG Frankfurt in the international tax department. Later she joined the tax department of Heraeus Holding GmbH, where, as Senior Manager, she was responsible for the international taxes of the group. Min Ni, Siemens Ltd., Shanghai Min Ni came to Mannheim with the goal of preparing for a career in a European company doing business in China. Now, as Export Control Coordinator for Siemens, one of the biggest German global players, she can successfully apply her skills and knowledge. Mannheim s ability to provide students with the opportunity to learn at many other business schools throughout the world, combined with its capabilities as Germany s top business university, make it one of the world s top MBA programs. I ve benefited greatly from the valuable experiences of working with such diverse, talented students during my MBA. Peter Findlay studied aerospace engineering and received a master s degree in computational fluid dynamics. Before starting the Mannheim MBA, he worked for several years with Pratt and Whitney Canada as an aerodynamic designer and operations engineer. After MBA graduation, he moved to Toronto and currently works as an associate with A.T. Kearney, a strategy / management consultancy. André Lück, Robert Bosch GmbH, Stuttgart André Lück had more than five years of experience in consulting and logistics when he decided to broaden his horizon. After completing his Mannheim MBA, he now works as a purchasing manager at Robert Bosch GmbH. 1 st Choice Human Resource Directors in Germany prefer Mannheim graduates to all others (Wirtschaftswoche )

18 09 Beyond Hard skills Social Responsibility at the Core Doing your MBA at Mannheim Business School involves far more than taking classes in Financial Accounting, Corporate Finance or Supply Chain Management. Business ethics and social responsibility have always been core elements of our school s educational concept. This is why the social project is an integral and mandatory part of the Mannheim MBA curriculum. Innovative Projects The project should make a positive contribution to society on some level. However, it is up to your individual team to define the scope of your project, as it may pursue any number of goals: educational, promotional, humanitarian or social. The social project puts your project management abilities to the test and allows you to make a difference in the community. Past projects range from art classes for children treated at University Hospital Mannheim over introductory internet classes for senior citizens to a blood drive organized on campus. Multi Competence Teams The framework for the social project is set by the Multi Competence Team (MCT) concept which is applied in all Mannheim Business School programs. As the concept hinges on two basic tenets for an ideal learning experience, diversity and continuity, participants are assigned to heterogeneous teams at the beginning of their MBA experience. The Multi Competence Teams stay together for the duration of the program and jointly work together on their social as well as on their team project. Examples of Social Projects Project Title Small hands, great ideas Way of hope Big Brothers Big Sisters Germany Red Cross Blood Donation Supporting the Mannheimer Tafel Saving Energy in High Schools Subject Art classes for children treated at University Hospital Mannheim, project included exhibition of the artwork for sale with the Children s Clinic as beneficiary Project aimed at promoting the German division of Big Brothers Big Sisters, a non-profit youth mentoring organization Organization of a blood drive on the University of Mannheim Campus in cooperation with the Mannheim chapter of the German Red Cross Promotional project on behalf of the Mannheimer Tafel, which supports the socially disadvantaged by selling food at discounted prices Matching of students from a local high school with senior citizens from an adult day care center and organization of a joint new media class Development and implementation of a concept for teaching children about energy efficiency and conservation

19 10 Living in Mannheim Situated at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar rivers in one of the sunniest regions of Germany, Mannheim offers its residents and visitors numerous possibilities to spend their leisure time: having a cup of coffee in the courtyard of the castle, relaxing in the beautiful Luisenpark, cycling on the banks of the Neckar river, strolling through the busy shopping streets with their cafés and bars, wine-tasting in the nearby Palatinate, or attending cultural highlights on the culture mile with its museums, galleries, concert hall, opera, ballet and theatre.
