1 The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) recommends installing the Student Data Capture System (SDCS) on a 32-bit edition of Windows whenever possible. However, in some cases, this option is not available. This guide provides instructions on how to install SDCS using Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, and is primarily intended for those users whose environment is based on a 64-bit edition of Windows. QCAA is not responsible for any technical support of Microsoft Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. Please note that assistance from your school s ICT support staff is likely to be required for this installation. Before you begin 1. Download Windows XP Mode with Virtual PC from the Microsoft website: You will need to choose your operating system and language on the download page. 2. Download the installation package for SDCS from the QCAA website: Install Windows XP Mode 1. Install Windows XP Mode in the designated folder

2 2 Configure Windows XP Mode. To do this: a. launch Windows XP Mode and then do one of the following a. Click Finish from the previous step Click Start > All Programs. Then choose Windows Virtual PC > Windows XP Mode. b. Read the license agreement carefully before accepting it and then click Next. Page 2 of 9

3 c. Create your own password and then click Next. 3. Click Start Setup to begin the first use of Windows XP Mode. Page 3 of 9

4 Install SDCS software on Windows XP Mode For detailed instructions on how to install SDCS and work with your data, see the Student Data Capture System page on the QCAA website: 1. Unzip the installation package. Browse to a temporary folder and click Next. a. Install SDCS. Browse to the folder and click Next. Page 4 of 9

5 Set up printing Please consult with your system administrator before setting up printers. This installation guide only covers setting up network printers. For other scenarios, please refer to Scenario 3: Print from a virtual machine from the Windows Virtual PC Evaluation Guide, available on the Microsoft website: 1. Configure the network. To do this: a. Run Windows XP Mode if you have not done so already. If the menu item is not visible, click Exit Full Screen. b. Open the Windows XP Mode Settings window by clicking Tools > Settings. 6 c. Choose your network adaptor. Select Networking and choose your network adaptor c.from the Adapter 1 drop-down menu. (In the example below, it is Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet ). Then click OK. More information about options in the drop-down menu can be obtained from Windows Virtual PC Evaluation Guide, available at: d. Verify the host network adapter is functional. Run the command ipconfig in the prompt d.and your domain should appear in the DNS Suffix. In the example below, it is qcaa.local. Page 6 of 9

7 2. Set up the network printer. To do this: a. Open the Printers and Faxes window. Click Start > Printers and Faxes b. Add a new printer by clicking Add a printer > Next. Select A network printer then click b.next > Connect to this printer and then input the path and name to your printer (in the example below, it is \\file1\l8-yellow). You may need to provide your domain username and password if prompted. c. Install the network printer driver. Click Yes when requested to install the network printer driver. Page 7 of 9

8 d. Verify the new printer is set up successfully. The newly added printer should appear in d.the Printers and Faxes window. Page 8 of 9

9 Once data has been loaded, you will be able to print reports from SDCS. Page 9 of 9
