1 1229 Esquimalt Road Esquimalt BC V9A 3P1 PHONE: FAX: FULL TIME FIRE FIGHTER Esquimalt Fire Rescue is seeking qualified individuals to fill positions as full time fire fighters. These are union positions. Full time fire fighters regularly work in hazardous conditions when involved in suppression or rescue duties. Benefits, terms and conditions of employment are laid out in the Collective Agreement between the Corporation of the Township of Esquimalt and Local 4264 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF). FIRE FIGHTER QUALIFICATIONS If you are interested in pursuing a career as a professional full time fire fighter with the Corporation of the Township of Esquimalt, please refer to the Fire Fighter Application to view both the required and preferred qualifications. GENERAL INFORMATION Required qualifications must be met for an application to be considered in this competition. Due to the large number of applicants, those meeting the minimum basic qualifications and successfully passing the physical test may not automatically proceed to the next stage of the competition. Esquimalt Fire Rescue reserves the right to limit the number of candidates that proceed to any stage. SELECTION PROCESS Application packages accepted from posting date until Friday, January 27 th, :00pm. Following a review of application packages, a limited number of candidates will be invited to participate in a skills assessment to occur on February 19 th 23 rd. (Waiver required) Following the skills assessment, a limited number of candidates will be invited to proceed to a candidate assessment stage with the on-duty shift. March 6 th 21 st. (Waiver required) Following the skills assessment, a limited number of candidates will be invited to interview. April 2 nd 5 th. A hiring eligibility pool will be established concurrent with the future needs of the Department. Placement in this pool does not guarantee employment.

2 The Esquimalt Fire Rescue Department reserves the right to terminate the hiring eligibility pool and commence a new recruit competition at any time. Candidates offered a position with the Department must successfully pass a medical evaluation to determine their suitability for working as a fire fighter. Application packages are available at or at Esquimalt Fire Rescue. The successful candidate(s) hired by the Esquimalt Fire Rescue will be required to live within the area set by the Department. All costs to acquire the required and preferred qualifications are borne solely and completely by the applicant. Please refer to the Firefighter Application to view both the required and preferred qualifications. Don t jeopardize your opportunity. Applicants are disqualified for flawed or incorrectly completed applications. Applications marked Fire Fighter Competition must be returned to Fire Chief David Ward at Esquimalt Fire Rescue, 500 Park Place, Esquimalt BC V9A 6Z9 no later than Friday, January 27 th, 2012, 4:00pm.

3 Required Qualifications Successful completion of a Firefighter Applicant Physical Fitness Evaluation conducted within the last six months by the University of Victoria or CPAT. Criminal record check Successful completion of an approved firefighter training program. A copy of your Firefighter Level 1 and 2 (NFPA 1001) certificate must be attached to your application clearly displaying the IFSAC or PROBOARD endorsement (seal). A valid WorkSafe BC Occupational First Aid Level III or BC First Responder Level III, or equivalent. (Note: All equivalencies (ex: out of province certification) must be confirmed in writing by WorkSafe BC and submitted with the application) CPR Level C Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant status with legal entitlement to work in Canada An eye examination, conducted by a Doctor of Optometry within six months of the competition which demonstrates: o o o o Far visual acuity. Far visual acuity less than 20/40 binocular, corrected with contact lenses or spectacles. Far visual acuity less than 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles, uncorrected. Peripheral vision of 140 degrees minimum in each eye Colour vision sufficient to distinguish red, green and yellow That the candidate does not have any eye condition that could prohibit them from safely performing essential job tasks Normal hearing with no artificial aids. An audiogram must be submitted, dated within six months of the competition. Proof of education BC Secondary School, Grade 12 or equivalent A valid and subsisting British Columbia Class 3 driver s licence with an Air Brake endorsement or equivalent A driving record indicative of responsible operation. A driver s abstract must be submitted and dated within three months of the competition. (Note: A record of more than 6 points over a three year period may eliminate a candidate from further consideration.)
