Circuit switching vs. packet switching Circuit Switching Packet Switching Channel Allocation for entire call period one user uses complete traffic channel only if needed (capacity on demand) several users share one traffic channel (statistical multiplexing) User pays for... duration of call amount of transmitted data For bursty traffic Inefficient Efficient Institute of Communication etworks System Archit... 2 GPRS System Architecture Institute of Communication etworks

General GSM Concept: Some GSM Addresses Mobile Station IMEI International Mobile Station Equipment Identity Mobile Subscriber IMSI International Mobile Subscriber Identity TMSI Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity MSISD Mobile Station ISD umber Institute of Communication etworks GPRS Support odes (GS): SGS and GGS Institute of Communication etworks

Serving GPRS Support ode (SGS) Delivery of data packets within its service area. Routing, mobility management (attach, detach, location management), authentication, charging,... Institute of Communication etworks Gateway GPRS Support ode (GGS) Interface between GPRS backbone and external PD Packet/address conversion (e.g. IP to GSM), routing, authentication, charging,... Institute of Communication etworks

Gateway GPRS Support ode (GGS) User ocation? User Profile? Institute of Communication etworks Gateway GPRS Support ode (GGS) ocation Register: location information (current SGS address) user profiles (e.g., IMSI, address(es) used in PD) Institute of Communication etworks

HR (Home ocation Register): GPRS impacts ew Information stored in HR: For each GPRS user: location information (current SGS) user addresses (IMSI <-> address(es) used in PD) user subscription profiles (e.g. QoS profile, see PDP context) Additional functions (new MAP functions) More memory and performance needed ew interfaces Gr and Gc Institute of Communication etworks VR (Visited ocation Register): GPRS impacts ew information stored in VR: For each GPRS user in service area: GPRS related user data ocation Information (current SGS) ew functions & register entries for combined location management and paging ew interface Gs Institute of Communication etworks

Serving GPRS Support ode (SGS) ocation Register: location information (e.g., current cell, current VR) user profiles (e.g., IMSI, address(es) used in PD) Institute of Communication etworks GPRS System Architecture Institute of Communication etworks

Intra-PM Backbone Intra-PM Backbone: (or Intra-operator backbone) IP-based connects GS of one provider. private network. Institute of Communication etworks Border Gateway The task of Border Gateway is to ensure secure communications between different GPRS. Functionality not defined in the GPRS specification. Practice: Firewall (security) and routing. BG enables roaming. Institute of Communication etworks

Inter-PM GPRS Backbone Inter-PM Backbone: (or Inter-operator backbone) IP-based connects two GPRS providers, thus enabling roaming public (e.g. Internet) or private IP network Institute of Communication etworks Session/MM/Routing 3 Session Management, Mobility Management, and Routing 3.1 Attachment and Detachment Procedure 3.2 Session Management and PDP Context 3.3 Routing 3.4. ocation Management Institute of Communication etworks

GPRS Attach and Detach To use GPRS services MS must attach to network MS / user registers with an SGS SGS: Checks if user and MS are authorized to use network? Copies user profile from HR. Assigns a P-TMSI (Packet-TMSI) to user. Also possible: Combined GPRS/IMSI attach for GSM and GPRS Institute of Communication etworks PDP Address and PDP Context To exchange packets with PD after attach MS applies for address used in the PD Packet Data Protocol Address (PDP Address) e.g. IP address PDP Context: describes characteristics of session PDP Type (e.g., IPv4) PDP Address (e.g., ) requested QoS address of GGS which is access point to PD Active PDP context: MS is visible for the external PD (can send and receive packets) Institute of Communication etworks

PDP Address and PDP Context Address Mapping: PDP Address in GGS GSM Address of MS Simultaneous PDP Contexts: One user may have several PDP contexts active at a given time Static or dynamic PDP context activation (Example IP) static IP address dynamic IP address - dynamic Home-PM IP address - dynamic Visited-PM IP address Institute of Communication etworks PDP Context Activation Institute of Communication etworks

Routing Example: Incoming IP packet (MT) Address conversion: IP-Dest TID + SGS (from PDP context)? IP packet (Dest: , Source: )? SGS SGS GGS Internet GTP (GPRS TunneIing Protocol) (SGS IP address, Tunneling ID, IP packet) Address conversion: TID TI, SAPI, QoS, and cell (from PDP context) IP packet SDCP (Subetwork Dependent Convergence Protocol) (Temp ogial ink Id, SAPI, IP packet) Institute of Communication etworks Routing Example: Outgoing IP packet (MO) IP packet GGS SGS? SGS Internet GGS GTP (GGS IP address, Tunneling ID, IP packet) Address conversion: TI + SAPI TID + GGS (from PDP context) SDCP (TI, SAPI, IP packet) Address conversion: IP-Source TI, SAPI (from PDP context) IP packet (Dest: , Source: ) Institute of Communication etworks

Routing Example Institute of Communication etworks ocation Management Problem Statement: For incoming calls/packets we must know the location (cell, service area) of the MS. ocation Updating: MS sends ocation Updates to SGS. SGS informs GGS and HR about current location. Question: How often should MS send a ocation Update? Save battery of MS! Minimize radio usage! - Paging in Downlink - ocation Updates & Paging Responses in Uplink Institute of Communication etworks

Cell Routing Area ocation Area ocation Area (A) Cell Routing Area (RA) Institute of Communication etworks ocation Management: State Model o location management; MS not reachable MS sends ocation Update to SGS when it changes cell. MS sends ocation Update to SGS when it changes routing area. Institute of Communication etworks

Routing Area Update: Intra-SGS and Inter-SGS Intra-SGS routing area update MS moves to an RA that is administered by the same SGS as the old RA. SGS has stored user profile Assigns new P-TMSI Inter-SGS routing area update MS moves to an RA that is administered by a different SGS as the old RA. ew SGS requests profile from old SGS SGS informs all GGSs, HR, and VR Institute of Communication etworks Intra-SGS routing area update Institute of Communication etworks

ocation Management: Summary Two levels Micro Mobility Management Macro Mobility Management tracks current RA or cell tracks current SGS and stores it in GGS, HR, and VR Institute of Communication etworks ocation Management: Routing Area Planning A > RA > Cell, but: What is the best size and form? ocation Update when MS changes big area cell Comp. with GSM Radio capacity: downlink Radio capacity: uplink Data delivery Battery like in GSM when no call MS s location is not known exactly paging required for every downlink packet not wasted for mobility m. wasted for paging responses delayed significantly saves battery like in GSM during call MS s location is kown exactly o paging needed wasted for mobility manag. very fast consumes batteries Tradeoff!
