1 Round Lake Area Schools Community Unit School District #116 JOB CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION JOB CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Athletic Trainer DEPARTMENT: Teaching and Learning INCUMBENT NAME: Appendix A, lane 1 step 6 as starting point 12 month employee BARGAINING UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Education Association of Round Lake REPORTS TO: Receives administrative direction from the Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, Building Principal or other District level administrator FLSA DESIGNATION: Exempt PART I - SUMMARY OF CLASSIFICATION This class is accountable for providing professional athletic trainer services for all athletic programs and student athletes requiring services at the high school and middle schools as required. The duties of the athletic trainer include, but are not limited to, prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and immediate care of athletic injuries; rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries; professional development and responsibility; and health care administration as specified in the Domains of the NATA Certified Athletic Trainer. The athletic trainer serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes and parents. The athletic trainer ensures that players participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. The athletic trainer will coordinate with the assistant principal/athletic director to ensure that the athletic training room and all required events will be covered. PART II - MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: General Experience: 1. Bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university; 2. Five (5) years experience in athletic training; 3. Hold and maintain National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Certification and Illinois State Licensure. Special Requirement: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made prior to appointment. B. CREDENTIALS: C. LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: 1. Illinois Professional Educator License with the required endorsements as provided in the School Code. 1 P a g e

Knowledge of Response to Intervention (RtI) and how to improve core instruction while building a system of interventions; 15. Knowledge of school safety procedures; 16. Knowledge of State and Federal laws relating to minors, the Teacher Code-of-Ethics, and local policies and procedures; 17. Knowledge of the No Child Left Behind requirement; 18. Knowledge of the philosophy and methods of education and teaching; 19. Knowledge of the principles and practices of education for special needs population; 20. PART III - POSITION SUPERVISES: PART IV - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties. 1. Administers first aid and assistance to injured student athletes for the purpose of providing appropriate immediate care as required; 2. Advises coaches of flexibility, strengthening and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries and optimize performance; 3. Assists coaches and officials during athletic events for the purpose of responding to equipment and/or medical needs of student athletes; 4. Assists in the development of a budget and the ordering of athletic training supplies and equipment; 5. Assists in the evaluation of the effectiveness and efficiency of existing athletic programs; 6. Attends team meetings as deemed appropriate; 7. Conducts sports medicine workshops for the District's coaches which will include information on injury prevention, basic first aid and CPR, injury recognition and treatment and injury rehabilitation and specific information on blood borne pathogens, HIV/AIDS, the District's sports medicine protocols and other health-related topics; 8. Consults with physicians and other medical personnel (e.g. referrals, physical exams, fitting of braces, etc.) for the purpose of developing course of treatment for injured students; 9. Coordinates the ordering of athletic training equipment and supply inventory for the purpose of ensuring that items are readily available as needed and are within established budget objectives; 10. Counsels and advises athletes on health related issues, including nutrition and substance abuse; 11. Covers selected postseason contests as determined by the Athletic Director; 12. Designs and supervises rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries under the direction of a referring physician; 13. Develops a variety of programs in cooperation with coaches (e.g. conditioning, injury prevention, etc.) for the purpose of preventing injury to students; 14. Ensures that professional services rendered shall be in accordance with the Illinois Athletic Trainer Licensure Act; 15. Evaluates facility and playing field for potential hazards, inadequate equipment, etc. for the purpose of implementing modifications or recommendations that would reduce the risk of injuries; 16. Is responsible for budgeting, ordering and inventorying athletic training supplies; 17. Maintains accurate medical records for injuries, treatment, rehabilitation and physician referrals; 18. Maintains effective community relations in an effort with outside organizations to foster mutual respect for and collaboration on joint athletic and other educational initiatives; 3 P a g e

4 19. Maintains open channels of communication with coaches, parents and physicians regarding athletic injuries, treatment and rehabilitation; 20. Maintains student treatment and health records (e.g. physical exam records, emergency release, medical history, etc.) for the purpose of communicating and/or documenting information in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures; 21. Orients student athletes, parents, coaches, etc. regarding potential health risk of athletic participation in athletics for the purpose of implementing preventive strategies; 22. Performs injury evaluation and emergency medical referral; 23. Prepares athletes for competition by the application of devices such as strapping, bandaging, taping, bracing, and equipment designed to help protect the athlete against injury; 24. Processes a variety of documents relating to injuries (e.g. accident/injury reports, records of treatment, etc.) for the purpose of communicating and documenting information in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures; 25. Promotes continuous growth in student achievement; 26. Promotes positive student behavior; 27. Provides coverage for home contests on a schedule cooperatively determined with the Athletic Director, as well as covering most varsity contests, non-varsity contests in football and varsity football awaygames. (Varsity and selected non-varsity contests will be covered based on the risk of the sports and the availability of the athletic trainer during a particular sport season. Practice coverage will be determined by the Athletic Director and will typically include daily coverage of varsity and non-varsity sports. This coverage will be based on injury risk of the sport and other mutually agreed on factors); 28. Provides for the prevention of athletic injuries through the application of protective taping, wraps and braces and assists in the design of practices to help to reduce the incidence of injury; 29. Provides immediate care of athletic injuries and refers the athlete to medical facilities when necessary; 30. Responds to emergency situations (e.g. injures, disturbances, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns; 31. Schedules medical staff and emergency medical equipment at home varsity football games for the purpose of ensuring adequate coverage for scheduled athletic events as mandated by the IHSA; 32. Supervises athletic training; 33. Performs related work as required. 4 P a g e
