We will have several conversations during course development to discuss online strategies for the below. 1. Information about the TEL project a. Proposed delivery date? b. How much content is already developed (handouts, lecture notes etc)? c. Is there a lab? 2. Overview of course a. Briefly describe the course b. How you normally teach this course? What works well? Not so well? 3. Expected Audience a. Who are your students? And why do they take your course? b. How many students normally enroll? c. Is this a required course or an elective? d. What other courses (that fit with this course) are offered online, or planned for development? e. What are the prerequisites? f. Would you benefit from DLD market research about your expected audience? 4. Initial thoughts of instructional technologies a. Will you include synchronous or asynchronous elements? 5. Timelines (working backwards) a. Most of the content needs to be completed on your end before ID and GM work can take place. Do you forsee any issues or constraints on time that may interfere? 6. Copyright and Special Notes a. Do you have a textbook for this course?

2 b. Do you have a readings package? c. Are there other resources going to be used (journal or newspaper articles, web links, videos, special software, CD Rom etc)? d. Any materials needing copyright clearance for digital use? 7. Assignments a. What are your thoughts and ideas for assignments, learning activities and multi-media?

3 8. Exams: There are two procedures for exams in an online course: a. Online Exams are written online without invigilation, but students use the honor system while writing the exam. Distance Learning Division should be notified regarding online exam details. Exams written online should be conducted during regular office hours due to support issues. b. Invigilated -- Each off campus site hires an invigilator (Regina section to be invigilated by instructor) to hand out exams, stay with the students and sends completed exams back to Distance Learning Division (DLD) Arrangements with each site to be made by DLD. 9. Technological experience a. Are you comfortable with using a computer? b. Have you used UR Courses before in face-to-face situations? c. Are you willing/do you have time to learn about new technologies? 10. Roles and Responsibilities a. How to you feel about working in a team? b. What kind of support are you looking from your course development team?

4 Instructional Design Roles a. Delivery Breakdown: i.first offering: Full Id support and GM work; Second offering: ID assists with course revisions; Third offering: Course instructor on their own (Unless applying for new funding to revise existing course). b. Instructional Designer Main Responsibilities i. Keep abreast of best practices in teaching and learning ii.assess and recommend pedagogical applicability of emerging instructional technologies after the technology has been vetted by a committee based on peer reviewed criteria. (see Sloan C criteria) iii. Help instructors design and develop effective and meaningful instruction in a variety of media, including online courses and courseware iv. Recommend appropriate instructional strategies and advise on suitable pedagogical uses of various established technologies. v.provide advice on standards relating to distance delivery, accessibility and copyright issues. vi. Provide professional development training to new online course instructors. i.e. Orientation to Online Learning (OOL) course vii.project Management: Call meetings, prepare agenda, develop timeline, manage budget, delegate and manage tasks given to team members (COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE) viii. Give advice/suggestions as to how best to make the course elements work in an online environment. ix. Advise instructor as to the following aspects of the content: accessibility, readability, potential for learner engagement and fit with learning objectives. x.work with graphics/multimedia staff and/or SME to ensure that course content gets uploaded to URCourses. xi. Ensure that course materials such as copyright permissions, course package, welcome letter, class fact sheet, etc. are completed. xii. Work with the Library and the Coordinator of Learner Support from the Distance Learning Division to address the student learning needs of geographic and transactional

5 distance. xiii. Clear copyright for any course materials requiring it.

6 Subject matter expert roles: i. Participate in Orientation to Online Learning (OOL) and incorporate OOL principles in the development of your content modules ii. Write content according to the project management schedule to ensure compliance with mutually agreed upon timeline and milestones. iii. Consider and incorporate feedback from the ID as to the following aspects of content development: alignment with learning objectives; learner engagement; interactive learning elements; assessment; accessibility; and readability. iv. Provide bibliographic information for all learning resources to be used in course (videos, articles, images) that may require copyright permission. v. Work with course development team to build your own capacity to function independently within UR Courses (leading up to and during initial offering and one revision) Do you have any questions or additional information?
