Temporary $5 Million Lifetime Gift & Estate Tax Exclusion Lifetime exclusions exempt from Federal Gift and Estate Tax and have been "temporarily" increased to $5M per person ($10M for married couples) until December 31, This exclusion removes the value from one's estate and is often used to fund life insurance to provide an order of magnitude of gift, estate, and income tax-free life insurance proceeds. For example, $5 million could reasonably provide $25-$50 million of tax-free benefits to an estate. Extension of Unrestricted GRATs A GRAT is an estate freeze technique allowing the transfer of all growth of an asset above IRS published guidelines without Federal Gift or Estate Tax. Such strategies are ideal for securities anticipated to increase in value.
