YEAR 01 Compulsory modules: Introductory Economics Economic Reasoning Perspectives from the Social Sciences Mathematics and Statistics for Business and Economics Finance and Accounting Plus options from minor specialisms OUR DEGREE BA (Hons) Economics* 3 years full-time gold.ac.uk/ug/ba-economics In this degree you ll receive formal training in economic theory and real world applications, but you ll also get to choose an extra specialism that best suits your abilities and talents (see page 4). You ll develop the core economic skills employers are looking for, and a comprehensive understanding of an area of study that will help you see the economy from a non-economic perspective as well. This will give you the ability to work with economists and non-economists in the marketplace, giving you unique skills in the job market. 3 STUDY OPTIONS You ll major in economics, and choose one of five minor specialisms: Communication and Technology Markets and Organisations Human Behaviour and Choice The Creative Impulse Concepts, Ideas and Perspectives This structure gives you substantial choice in shaping your undergraduate degree and developing new links between subjects on areas of knowledge that interest you. The structure will help you develop an excellent technical competence in economics and a deeper understanding of its wider context. You can explore the links between economics and management, entrepreneurship, computing, psychology, history, sociology, media, anthropology and the arts through these various minor specialisms. Goldsmiths excellent reputation in these subject areas means you re getting a unique educational experience. Core teaching covers maths and statistics, economic analysis, finance and accounting, economic history, microeconomics and macroeconomics, quantitative methods and data analysis, public and international economics, and communication and presentation skills. You ll also have a work placement opportunity in your second year. This will enhance your CV, bring theory and practical experience together, and help you develop industry contacts. 3 5

4 YOUR FUTURE Your role as an economist You ll be able to use your knowledge of economic theory to advise government departments, businesses, banks and other organisations. You could help governments to develop policies and businesses to plan financial strategies. Your work will vary according to whether you will be advising the government, international organisations or businesses, and can include: Monitoring past and present economic issues and trends Creating models to predict future economic developments Analysing data Producing reports and presenting findings to your employer or client Writing reports for the press Examining the effectiveness of current policies Advising on the potential economic impact of policies The largest government employers of economists in the UK are the Government Economic Service and the Bank of England. Others include: Commercial and investment banks Other government departments and think tanks International organisations such as the United Nations Supranational organisations like the European Union Universities Regional development agencies Specialist consultancies Insurance companies Trade unions Newspapers and financial journals 5 7
