2 SOCIAL SCIENCES & EDUCATION The Social Sciences and Education programs at Tidewater Community College prepare students for occupations in child care, child and youth education, and human services. The Certificate and Career Studies Certificates are available for students who may wish to fine-tune their skills or add new ones. Associate of Applied Science Degrees are more comprehensive programs designed to prepare students for specific careers in early childhood development and human services. 3 CAREER STUDIES CERTIFICATE Childhood Development The Child Development Career Studies Certificate provides students with entry-level knowledge required to work with children. These core courses also meet the requirements for students to begin their CDA credentialing processes.

5 ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE Early Childhood Development The Early Childhood Development programs prepare students in the care, supervision, and education of young children from birth to age eight. The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree provides fundamentals of child development and educational training for those entering the field. Graduates are equipped with knowledge and skills for work in settings such as preschools, child care centers and homes, Head Start programs, private schools, public schools and before-and-after school programs.

11 CERTIFICATE Early Childhood Instruction The Early Childhood Instruction Certificate trains students in the care, supervision, and education of children from birth through 12 years of age. Graduates earning this certification begin work in public and private child care centers, preschool programs, family child care homes, before-and-after school programs, and religious-sponsored programs, or as private family nannies.

Course work includes language arts, social studies, math, and science, along with child psychology behavior guidance.

17 ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE DEGREE Social Sciences The Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Social Sciences is designed for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue a baccalaureate degree in one of the social or behavioral sciences. Social Sciences include academic disciplines such as anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology, and psychology. The A.S. in Social Sciences also prepares students for some teacher certification programs.
