2 JOB SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Teaches and evaluates in accordance with applicable standards & philosophies of the Canadian Yachting Association and Alberta Sailing Association. Actively, enthusiastically and appropriately participates in lessons Uses a variety of techniques to motivate students and make lessons fun Modifies instructional approach depending on the level / age / ability of students, the size of the class, and the location Instructor spends the majority/appropriate amount of time of each class on the water actively teaching based on the requirements of the CYA Has good general sailing knowledge and can answer questions beyond the specific standard Keeps logbook with daily observations and participates in discussions about student progress. Consistently applies skills and knowledge with proficiency to complete required job duties and tasks (Focus is on instructional skills and administrative ability.) Overall for Job Skills & Knowledge Uses correct terminology Can demonstrate sailing skills to the level being taught Able to recognize and analyze groups and individuals abilities Prepares and uses long and short term lesson plans (keeps them available on site) Ensures effective use of class time Gives clear and precise instructions to students Gives positive and motivating feedback Adheres to specific practices of GSS (ie. Modification of CYA standards, Pirates Day, Mc-D Day, Games) Has knowledge of and can apply relevant policies and standard operating procedures to complete required tasks (e.g. Maintenance, spring/fall program process, daily operations, radio use, boat patrol, etc.) Enthusiastically carries out teaching in accordance with standards, guidelines and GSS specific procedures
3 CUSTOMER SERVICE Overall for Customer Service Actions demonstrate empathy and concern for students and caregiver needs Demonstrates flexibility in meeting patrons changing needs Actions are supportive and positive towards other staff, facilities and programs Aware of how personal presentation (body language, tone of voice, facial expressions) affects customer service Shows consideration, respect and tolerance to all Consistently polite, courteous, friendly and approachable Has a basic knowledge of and applies policies and procedures, including those that are specific to GSS Has a good understanding of and can provide detailed information about sailing lessons Has a basic understanding of related products and services (e.g. Rentals & other city programs) Capitalizes on opportunities to educate patrons about programs Resourceful in obtaining proper information Directs the public to the appropriate person. Timely / constructive communication about each class with supervisory staff Alerts instructors of issues that may impact a student s success when problems arise and help devise an action plan. Attendance, attitude, behavior Passes along conflicts or concerns to supervisory staff when appropriate Has good knowledge or can direct customers to information on further sailing opportunities beyond Glenmore Sailing School (i.e. Cruising, racing, GSC, CYC) Takes actions which demonstrate a total quality commitment to customer service for both internal and external customers
4 TEAMWORK AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Overall Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills Promotes other instructors, classes & programs Knowledgeable and supportive of supervisor decisions and provides feedback when appropriate Supports others to contribute best efforts to get the work done (Ie. End of day tasks and games.) Works with team members to ensure tasks are completed Is viewed as approachable Welcomes and supports staff who are new to the facility Cooperates to ensure efficient use of school space, reservoir space and equipment Utilizes team teaching approach where appropriate Openly shares new ideas and resources with other staff Responds positively to and is flexible to program changes, class layout, feedback Corrects inappropriate behavior among students Readily adapts to unforeseen situations and follows up appropriately Displays positive interactions with others (verbal, actions /body language, gestures) Works with class / staff / public at eye level Maintains others self esteem Demonstrates confidence & enthusiasm Shows consideration, respect, tolerance Takes actions which result in building positive team morale Involves supervisory staff when needed to resolve conflicts Asks for assistance if needed (of instructors, supervisory staff, etc.) Makes an attempt to independently and effectively resolve or reduce conflict Recognizes and demonstrates appreciation for efforts of employees Makes efforts to ensure open and effective communication Written and verbal communication is effective Consistently demonstrates positive interpersonal skills to work with and assist others in achieving results
5 SAFETY Alerts instructor and provides immediate assistance to a student in need (dangerous situation, trouble with other students, etc) Understand limitations and specific considerations for certain students Enforces and educates public about the rules of the facility in a positive manner during lessons Conducts lessons in a safe manner and stresses the safe and proper use of equipment Recognize unsafe or potentially unsafe situations and takes appropriate action Keeps teaching space and facility tidy (i.e. equipment) Aware of work area design and layout Location of emergency equipment Safety procedures Complete follow through with transition times Seeing students out to and from the water/boats Communicating situations to other instructors and Boat Patrol Meeting next class Is aware of hazardous or potentially hazardous situations and takes appropriate action to maintain a safe environment for patrons, employees and themselves. Advises appropriate staff (supervisory, Boat Patrol, maintenance) of situations Medic alert Broken equipment or equipment in disrepair Ensures communication link Makes recommendations and offers solutions for improved safety of staff and patrons if appropriate Uses correct products, personal protective equipment and procedures for maintenance issues Overall for Safety

Aware of how personal presentation (body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, gestures) affects perception of customers Friendly & approachable Enthusiastic Appears to enjoy teaching (appears to be having fun) Reports in sufficient time to review lesson plans, obtain equipment and greet students On time for and participates in meetings, in-services, training sessions and performance reviews Efficient class transitions starts and ends class on time Lesson plans and time sheets are legible, accurate, complete & timely Understands the need for completely filled out forms Adheres to points in the camp orientation (Dressing up for theme days, taking out boats at the end of the dat, etc.) Consistently gives notice well in advance of change in commitments to Head Instructor or Boat Patrol Is willing to teach all classes assigned and available for all lessons in a session Readily adapts to unforeseen situations and follows up appropriately Is actively involved in personal performance development Open to feedback Positive role model for coworkers, patrons, and students. Able to focus on task at hand Demonstrates pride and professionalism in performing all aspects of the job. (Focus is on: willingness, thoroughness, dependability, credibility and responsibility.)
