1 Faculty of Arts UBC-Community Learning Initiative Faculty of Arts Community Service Learning and Community Based Research Request for Proposals OVERVIEW The Faculty of Arts is committed to integrating Community Service Learning (CSL) and Community Based Research (CBR) activities into course curriculum across both departments and program areas. The goal of CSL and CBR is to enhance student learning by joining theory with experience and thought with action, thereby enabling students to see the real-life relevance of their classroom learning. Over the academic year, Arts was able to support seventeen courses that incorporated one or both pedagogical approaches. Across twelve disciplines, more than 400 students applied their course-based knowledge to priorities identified in partnership with local community-based organizations. A final report on these activities will be released later this year. To read the Faculty of Arts report on CSL/CBR activities in 2009_2010 click here. To learn more about CSL and CBR at UBC please visit: FUNDING MODEL AND ELIGABILITY Three categories of funding have been created for the purpose of supporting faculty member and local community based organizations capacity to develop, enhance and sustain CSL/CBR components in course curriculum. CSL/CBR Course Development and CSL/CBR Course Enhancement Funds are sequential, providing faculty members two phases to implement and sustain CSL/CBR activities in partnership with local community based organizations, though on-going funding is not guaranteed at this time. CSL/CBR Professional Development Funds are open to all faculty members in Arts and local community partners that identify and pursue opportunities that advance knowledge, capacity and sustainability of curricular CSL/CBR.
