Business continuity and availability solutions from HP HP s experience in storage and information lifecycle management, broad portfolio of infrastructure solutions, and close partnerships with industry leaders such as Cisco Systems make HP the ideal choice to deliver best-in-class business continuity and availability solutions. The HP Cisco data replication solution can help provide secure storage of business critical data and provide a foundation for enterprise business continuity and availability. 2
The HP Disaster Tolerant Framework Organization-wide business continuity plan HP disaster tolerant solution Business processes Applications Business alignment Design Implementation Management processes Testing and rehearsals Inter-site network Data replication SAN infrastructure Storage array Server Cluster/Failover User network Management HP disaster tolerant framework The HP Cisco data replication solution represents key components of the overall HP disaster tolerant framework. This framework represents the total set of technologies and processes that HP can help you put together to form an overall disaster tolerant solution. The following discussion of the components that make up the HP Cisco data replication solution is organized around the key components of this framework. A brief discussion follows on what HP can also offer in the other component areas. The HP Cisco data replication solution components Data replication Data replication is the foundation of any disaster tolerant solution. HP StorageWorks Continuous Access is a controller-based application that performs real-time replication between HP StorageWorks arrays. The software performs remote replication and delivers high data availability and performance to users on Fibre Channel based campus, metro, or continental storage area networks (SANs). Continuous Access provides you with the highest level of storage data protection capabilities to meet your business continuity implementation goals. Enterprise storage array systems The HP StorageWorks XP Disk Array delivers high availability for mission-critical applications where downtime is not an option. The XP is designed for organizations that demand the most from their storage. No single point of failure, along with non-disruptive online upgrades, help ensure that data is always available. The scalable design allows you to meet your capacity, performance, and heterogeneous connectivity needs today and tomorrow, without ever requiring a forklift upgrade. Outstanding levels of random and sequential performance are ideal for database, OLTP, Oracle, SAP, and Exchange workloads. HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 5000 is a high-performance, high-capacity, and high-availability virtual RAID storage solution for the high-end enterpriseclass marketplace that removes the time, space, and cost boundaries of traditionally architected storage. The EVA 5000 is designed for the data center where there is a critical need for improved storage utilization and scalability as well as meeting application-specific demands for consistently high transaction I/O and MB data rate performance, seamless capacity expansion, instantaneous replication, and simplified storage administration. 3
Standard technologies for the Adaptive Enterprise Standardization is key to enabling the Adaptive Enterprise. By designing and deploying solutions based on industry-standard technologies such as DWDM and the Cisco technologies that support it, HP provides customers with solutions that integrate easily into existing IT environments. The solution s simplicity and reusable components provide the flexibility to handle change easily, as well as the kind of longevity that protects your technology investment. SAN infrastructure In addition to disk storage and software products, the HP Cisco data replication solution includes a complete line of SAN interconnect hardware, based on key offerings from partner Cisco Systems. The Cisco Fibre Channel switches mentioned below support IP storage services, allowing for FCIP and iscsi operation. Only the Cisco MDS 9000 family of SAN switches offers intelligent network services such as VSANs, comprehensive integrated security, network-hosted storage applications, built-in diagnostic tools, and multi-protocol support for improved operational efficiency, investment protection, and industry-leading TCO. In addition, the Cisco ONS optical products offer features, such as extended buffer credits, to complement the features in the MDS Series switches. The Cisco MDS 9500 Series Multilayer Director Switches deliver industry-leading performance, port density, and high availability features to lower TCO and enable integrated SAN infrastructures. The Cisco MDS 9216 Multilayer Fabric Switch shares a consistent architecture with Cisco MDS 9500 Series Directors and offers the same multilayer intelligence in a modular fabric switch. Inter-site network The HP Cisco data replication solution also offers a complete line of dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical infrastructure solutions based on the Cisco ONS Series systems. The Cisco ONS delivers industry-leading service densities, allowing you to efficiently aggregate multiple storage, data, voice, and video interfaces over an ultra-high-bandwidth, intelligent optical infrastructure. This helps you to maximize the carrying capacity of available fiber and provides an intelligent switching fabric that supports several protection options to safeguard your mission-critical data, including switch fabric and trunk protection. The Cisco ONS provides industry-leading DWDM wavelength density per system supporting storage, data, voice, and video interfaces over an ultra-high-bandwidth, intelligent optical infrastructure. The Cisco MDS 9000 IP Storage (IPS) module and the MDS 9216 series of products integrate the IP protocol into the fibre channel switch. These devices provide intelligent services such as TCP/IP traffic shaping, load balancing, hardware compression, and SCSI write acceleration. The MDS IP solution is one of the first in the industry to offer integrated in-line hardware encryption to provide a secure, resilient, and highly available IP SAN extension alternative. With the Cisco ONS and IPS platforms, you can build flexible, scalable, and highly available networks to support business continuity, disaster recovery, and network, SAN, and data center consolidation. Services HP Services has a strong track record of successful data replication solution implementations. HP s network assessment services help ensure your enterprise backbone has the performance and quality required to support data replication and meet your recovery time objectives. If a network upgrade is needed, HP services will design, procure, integrate, and deploy Cisco network hardware and software. HP will also work with your carriers to provision adequate metro-area or wide-area links. HP mission-critical support services are available for all the HP and Cisco components of the data replication solution to help ensure high availability and ongoing performance of the entire solution. In short, HP takes complete responsibility for the solution, from inception through continuing support. No finger pointing, and no excuses. HP Cisco data replication solution architecture To protect the integrity of your business against unforeseen outages or disasters and to keep your business up and running, your data needs to be securely and effectively replicated at a remote location. Synchronous data replication provides the highest levels of data protection. With synchronous replication, both the source and destination copies are identical and concurrent at all times. In addition to synchronous data transfers, asynchronous (async) is also supported between storage arrays with up to 100 ms one-way latency between gateways. The clear advantage of async is the write completion back to the host for a faster host-to-storage I/O response time. This may be beneficial or preferred in some remote replication configurations. 4
Figure 1. Data replication over DWDM A single network can handle all of your data transmission needs. Figure 2. Data replication over FCIP FCIP-based replication offers lower cost and unlimited distance. UNIX, Windows NT... UNIX, NT... UNIX, NT... UNIX, NT... FC DWDM DWDM FC FC FC Optical MAN FCIP IP WAN FCIP Storage Storage Storage Storage Distances km Data resynchronization in 1 2 hours Provides very-high-bandwidth, low-latency network Scales to hundreds of multiprotocol interfaces Typically not distance limited Data resynchronization in 2 4 hours Supports Continuous Access in synchronous or async mode WAN characterization and tuning is critical Data replication over DWDM Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) is a cornerstone technology of our disaster tolerance portfolio, featuring best-in-class solutions from HP and Cisco Systems. Data replication over DWDM is ideally suited to any business that requires ultra-reliable replication and rapid confirmation of data storage at a remote site. Cisco DWDM aggregation and transport platforms, such as the ONS and ONS 15540, are used to interconnect data centers via an optical MAN (metropolitan area network) and can handle multiple protocols, including Fibre Channel (FC), FICON, ESCON, SONET/SDH, Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, and more. This enables you to easily write remote images of your data from every mission-critical area of your IT infrastructure. The Cisco ONS and ONS platforms can scale to support up to 256 FC/FICON/Gigabit Ethernet or up to 1,280 ESCON services per fiber pair, allowing the network to support application bandwidth requirements today and in the future. It s simple to extend the DWDM interface to support any non-storage-related traffic, such as data, voice, and video. This has no impact on storage performance and security and enables users to take even greater advantage of the DWDM network. This DWDM-based architecture offers more than just disaster tolerant data protection. DWDM-enabled platforms from Cisco handle multiple protocols, permitting voice, video, and other data formats to travel between connected locations. Therefore, a single network can handle all of your data transmission needs, reducing management complexity and the costs associated with multiple dedicated networks. Data replication: Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) FCIP-based data replication is an alternative technology for data replication offered by the Cisco MDS products. The biggest advantage of an FCIP solution is the removal of distance as a limitation. The overall cost of an FCIP solution is also lower, making FCIP-based replication a competitive solution, typically over longer distances. Multiple IP links can be used to provide high bandwidth and availability for the solution. For enterprises seeking the best possible disaster protection, a combination of DWDM-based synchronous replication and FCIP-based synchronous/asynchronous remote data replication provides exceptional peace of mind when it comes to data integrity and business continuity. 5
Reduce costly downtime and the loss of priceless data while keeping up to date on increasingly strict data-management regulations. Design, implementation, and integration HP consultants can provide a design, based on the HP Cisco data replication architectural blueprint, that will help ensure your recovery objectives and business needs are met. The design is based on your predefined continuity strategy, taking advantage of HP s collaborative process and many years of collective experience. An implementation plan is then created detailing equipment and resources needed to turn the strategy into reality. Management processes and procedures HP can either manage your disaster tolerant solution or help train your personnel in the appropriate processes to manage it yourself. Of course, management procedures include not only normal operation, but also the crucial procedures for failing back and resynchronizing your environment following the failure and recovery of one of your nodes. HP Disaster Tolerant Solution process components A disaster tolerant solution based on hardware components alone is doomed to failure. Appropriate processes must be set up through all stages of the service management lifecycle to help provide a successful implementation that will truly protect your critical business data and processes. The following processes are those that HP in its decades of experience has found to be critical to a successful disaster tolerant solution. They may be undertaken directly by your IT staff or be performed with partial or full assistance by HP Services. Business alignment Aligning your disaster tolerance project with your business needs is key to appropriately using your scarce IT resources and to justifying your investment. HP consultants can help by working with your key business and IT managers to do a business impact analysis (BIA). A BIA identifies business processes that are critical to the livelihood of your company. The analysis identifies the impact of downtime in tangible costs, such as lost revenue, market share, and penalties; and in intangible costs, such as reputation, image, and customer satisfaction. This data is then used to define the target recovery time objectives (maximum allowable time to recover business processes) and recovery point objectives (maximum allowable data loss) for each scoped business process. If HP manages your disaster tolerant solution, we can either provide a robust HP recovery center for locating your backup equipment or we can manage the environment located in your own facilities. We can also integrate the disaster tolerant solution with a full-scale managed storage environment. Testing and rehearsals HP consultants can work with your staff to design, implement, and manage disaster tests or rehearsals to help you meet your predefined recovery time and point objectives. In our experience, rehearsals are crucial to a successful solution, and we focus our technical expertise on this process to better help you in protecting your critical data. Business continuity plan Ideally, disaster tolerant solutions should be part of a fully integrated business continuity plan that incorporates the people, processes, and procedures necessary to protect your critical business processes. If you choose, HP consultants can design and develop a business continuity plan tailored to your business requirements. We use a proven methodology to develop the plan, including training and knowledge transfer, to ensure that your plan is complete, easily understood, flexible, and evolves based on your changing environment. 6
Management and monitoring HP can provide OpenView-based solutions to manage all of the components of your disaster tolerant solution, including the network, data replication, storage, servers, and clusters.
