Synchronous data replication provides the highest levels of data protection. With synchronous replication, both the source and destination copies are identical and concurrent at all times. In addition to synchronous data transfers, asynchronous (async) is also supported between storage arrays with up to 100 ms one-way latency between gateways. The clear advantage of async is the write completion back to the host for a faster host-to-storage I/O response time. This may be beneficial or preferred in some remote replication configurations. 4

Cisco DWDM aggregation and transport platforms, such as the ONS and ONS 15540, are used to interconnect data centers via an optical MAN (metropolitan area network) and can handle multiple protocols, including Fibre Channel (FC), FICON, ESCON, SONET/SDH, Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, and more. This enables you to easily write remote images of your data from every mission-critical area of your IT infrastructure. The Cisco ONS and ONS platforms can scale to support up to 256 FC/FICON/Gigabit Ethernet or up to 1,280 ESCON services per fiber pair, allowing the network to support application bandwidth requirements today and in the future. Data replication: Fibre Channel over IP (FCIP) FCIP-based data replication is an alternative technology for data replication offered by the Cisco MDS products. The overall cost of an FCIP solution is also lower, making FCIP-based replication a competitive solution, typically over longer distances. Multiple IP links can be used to provide high bandwidth and availability for the solution.
