Profile of Disability in Ontario About 1 in 7 (1.85 million) Ontarians has a disability As population ages, the number will increase. In 2025, 1 in 5 Ontarians will be 65 or older nearly 6.7 million people 38% of people will experience either a permanent or a temporary disability over the course of their lives Right now, 53% of Canadians either have a disability or have someone in their immediate family circle who is living with a disability 3 4 1
2 Barriers to Accessibility A barrier could be: A physical barrier An architectural barrier An information or communications barrier An attitudinal barrier A technological barrier A policy or practice Legislative Background AODA applies to broader public, private sector and nonprofits: Municipalities, provincial government ministries Hospitals Schools, colleges & universities Nonprofits & charities Stores, restaurants, supermarkets, dental offices.everyone 5 6 Compliance is Mandatory The Act gives the government the authority to set monetary penalties to enforce compliance. Penalties will be used only after all compliance assistance efforts have been exhausted. Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA) Audits, inspections and enforcement 7 8 2
3 AODA Customer Service Standard IASR Customer Service Standard Communications and Information Employment Transportation Design of Public Spaces 9 10 Customer Service Standard Customer Service Standard Set up policies, practices and procedures on: Providing goods or services to people with disabilities The use of assistive devices Service animals and support persons must be allowed in areas open to the public Ensure policies, practices and procedures are consistent with key principles of: Independence Dignity Integration Equality of opportunity
4 Customer Service Standard Customer Service Standard Communicate in a manner that takes a person s disability into account Let people know ahead of time what, if any, admission fee will be charged for a support person Let the public know when facilities or services are temporarily not available Provide training to: Staff, volunteers, contractors, and anyone who deals with the public on behalf of the provider Anyone involved in developing customer service policies, practices and procedures Set up a process to receive and respond to feedback Customer Service Standard Compliance Date January 1, 2012 All nonprofits Accessible Customer Service Tips Avoid stereotypes and generalizations Learn appropriate and respectful language Ask before you help someone Give the best customer service you can. Get to know their needs Communicate in a way that takes into account a person s disability. Find alternate ways to provide service

Hold interviews in an accessible location Have interview questions/scenarios written out and for the interviewee to refer to during the interview
11 Transportation Standard Municipalities that operate conventional and specialized transit Hospitals, colleges, universities and school boards some requirements Nonprofits are not obliged under this standard unless they are contracted to deliver services on behalf of an obligated organization Design of Public Spaces Compliance Date - Large Organizations January 1, 2016 Make new or redeveloped spaces accessible Recreational trails and beach access routes Outdoor public-use eating areas Outdoor play spaces Exterior paths of travel Accessible parking Service-related elements Maintenance Accessibility Reporting Nonprofits with 20 or more employees File reports on-line Next reporting deadline: By December 31, 2017 Question & Answer time!
