4 Westbay System Multilevel subsurface characterization and monitoring 1 2 Beyond traditional monitoring The Westbay System is the world s leading multilevel groundwater monitoring technology. With versatile, reliable, and defensible performance in applications around the globe, the Westbay System is the technology of choice for high-resolution subsurface monitoring and characterization. The Westbay System is a unique monitoring platform that allows users to measure formation pressures, obtain water chemistry samples, and perform hydraulic conductivity testing from any number of monitoring zones in a single borehole. Designed for versatility, the Westbay System can accommodate a wide variety of geologic and borehole conditions, and can be deployed to depths of over 1,200 m [4,000 ft]. Westbay Systems provide the highest level of data quality and the three-dimensional data density required for solving even the most difficult engineering challenges. westbay system advantages Obtain measurements and samples at any number of discrete locations in a single borehole Reduce drilling and installation costs, with minimal site disturbance Suitable for vertical, inclined or deviated boreholes Collect samples without purging Removable probes allow for convenient calibration and servicing Built-in defensible QA/QC procedures Reliable, long-term monitoring operation Westbay System Operations Westbay Systems are engineered with a unique, customizable casing system so they can be installed in a number of different ways to suit a wide variety of geologic conditions, drilling methods, and project objectives. The Westbay casing is modular, providing complete flexibility of well design so that essentially any number of monitoring zones of any length can be established. The system can also be installed in angled or deviated boreholes, providing additional flexibility for intersecting and monitoring subsurface features. The Westbay System consists of a single casing (tubing) that is installed in a borehole or well casing (see figure at left). Hydraulically-inflated packers and/ or select backfill provide engineered seals between monitoring zones, preventing unnatural flow and cross-contamination. Valved ports in the zones provide access for monitoring operations, which are carried out using wireline operated probes and tools (see figure at right). Standard Westbay System operations include measurement of formation pressures, collection of water chemistry samples and hydraulic conductivity testing. 3 1 Packer 2 3 Measurement Port Pumping Port Site assessment Monitoring and design 4 For more information visit

5 The power of multilevel characterization & monitoring applications For more than 30 years, the Westbay System has been the technology of choice for high-resolution subsurface monitoring and characterization for applications around the globe. With an unprecedented track record for multilevel groundwater technology, Westbay System completions can be relied upon for providing long-term performance in even the most difficult geologic conditions. Unconventional Oil and Gas As oil and gas companies continue to develop unconventional plays (shale gas, oil sands, coal bed methane, etc.), their activities have an increasing potential to interface with groundwater resources. The Westbay System provides the detailed monitoring required to help protect groundwater resources and establish sound unconventional oil and gas operations. Groundwater Resource Management Water agencies and private water companies are tasked with the challenge of developing and maintaining sustainable water supplies, often centered on groundwater. The Westbay System provides water managers with the flexibility to characterize groundwater in three-dimensions, leading to the optimization of management activities and the development of sustainable management practices Contaminant Site Investigations Characterization of contaminated groundwater requires detailed monitoring to eliminate data gaps, improve predictive numerical models, and track remedial efforts. The Westbay System is a reliable, Three-dimensional network cost-effective technology for obtaining detailed information, enabling groundwater professionals to carry out comprehensive and defensible contaminant site investigations and long-term monitoring. Geotechnical Projects Construction of deep geologic repositories for long-term storage of radioactive waste requires a concerted scientific program, including deployment of a wide variety of monitoring technologies. Westbay Systems provide the scientific accuracy, repeatability, and serviceability required by the exacting standards of these heavily regulated facilities. 1 Mining Mining operations can vary substantially between sites, and have the potential to impact the surrounding environment in many ways. The Westbay System is an ideal technology for monitoring a wide variety of these impacts, including site characterization for environmental impact assessment, waste piles, monitoring of leach operations, closure analyses, and tailings and process water ponds. Permafrost As activities such as mine development and oil and gas extraction increase in arctic environments, there is a corresponding demand for characterizing groundwater conditions beneath permafrost. The unique design of the Westbay System allows it to be installed and operated reliably in permafrost settings, gaining repeatable access to mobile groundwater beneath 500 m or more of permafrost. With its compact size (18 mm diameter), the Micro-Diver fits in almost any well. Use the Micro-Diver to: Measure atmospheric pressure for barometric compensation of Divers Monitor long-term groundwater temperature and pressure Specifications ø18 mm diameter, 88 mm length Stainless Steel housing Memory capacity: measurements Cera-Diver The Cera-Diver is designed to withstand potentially corrosive groundwater conditions while delivering exceptional reliability and accuracy when measuring water levels and temperatures. Use the Cera-Diver to: Provide a cost-effective alternative to groundwater monitoring in saltwater intrusion environments Log data from pumping/slug tests Specifications ø22 mm diameter, 90 mm length Ceramic housing Memory capacity: measurements Flexible Diver Installation and Data Retrieval Options Manual The Diver is suspended by a stainless steel cable which is permanently mounted inside the well casing. The Diver is raised to ground surface for easy connection to the USB Reading Unit which is connected through USB to your Pocket PC or laptop. Though cost effective, this method requires direct access to the Diver, and thus requires more manual effort and time in the field. Semi automatic Data is transferred from the Diver through the DDC cable. At ground surface, the Diver-Mate is connected to the DDC cable to retrieve the Diver data. The Diver-Mate is connected through USB to your Pocket PC or laptop. This method eliminates the need to raise the Diver to ground surface, thus eliminating offsets in the data upon re-deployment of the Diver; however, you still require direct access to well and opening of the well casing. Wireless Collect data wirelessly with your smart phone from dataloggers equipped with the Diver-DXT radio device. Data can be collected wirelessly at a range of up to 500m Diver Telemetry Data can be collected remotely from Divers equipped with the Diver-DXT radio device and a deployed Diver-Gate(s) telemetry unit. 6 For a price quote, sws-diver@slb.com or contact your local distributor
