The purpose of this survey course is to provide an introduction to human resources management theory and practice. We will examine the employee / employer relationship and its foundation in law and culture in both forprofit and non-profit settings. This course will provide the participants, future arts and entertainment organization managers and administrators, with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and implement effective human resources strategies from hiring, benefiting and compensating to coaching, evaluating, disciplining and terminating employees all within requisite legal limitations and parameters. Evaluation* Method Grading will be a combination of in-class participation and assignments. NOTE: Late assignments will result in a reduction of 1 full grade (e.g. A to B) for that assignment. Exceptions will be made for extenuating circumstances beyond the student s control, but only with reasonable documentation and appropriate notice to the instructor. 2 Assignments Assignments are designed to deepen the student s experiential understanding of the concepts, and business culture best practices covered in the course. Learning/Course Objectives* At the end of this course, participating students should be able to: Learning Objective Identify and apply fundamental U.S. fair employment/labor laws and regulations. How Assessed Exam #1,Final Exam and class participation Recommend protocols for the legal hiring and terminating of employees as well as effective ways to motivate employees. Exam #1, Final Exam, assignments and class participation Recognize and appropriately respond to emerging social issues in HR management such as religious discrimination; workplace harassment, family and medical leave issues and disability discrimination. 4 Plagiarism and cheating notice* Plagiarism and other forms of academic misrepresentation are viewed as extremely serious matters. Misrepresentation of another s work as one s own is widely recognized as among the most serious violations. The violation is clearly flagrant when it occurs as plagiarism on a required paper or as cheating on an examination, including take home as well as in class examinations. The punishment for such offenses can involve expulsion from the MEIM Program and Heinz School. Cheating includes, but is not limited to: 1. Plagiarism (explained below); 2. Submission of work that is not the student s own; 3. Submission or use of falsified data; 4. Unauthorized access to an exam or assignment; 5. Use of a stand in for an exam; 6.Use of unauthorized material in the preparation of an assignment or during an examination; 7.Supplying or communicating unauthorized information to another student for use in an assignment or exam; 8. Unauthorized collaboration on an assignment. Collaboration must be explicitly permitted by an instructor for it to be considered authorized. 9. Submission of the same work for credit in more than one course. Plagiarism is the failure to indicate the source of work either with quotation marks or footnotes. The source can be a phrase, a graphic element, a proof, specific language, or an idea derived from the work of another person. Note that material on the web is another person s work and is therefore equally subject to the rules on plagiarism and cheating as any other source material. Cheating and/or plagiarism on an essay assignment will result in a failing grade (0 points) for that assignment. The essay in which the cheating occurs will not be excluded from the offending student s assignments included in grade calculations; the points for that essay zero (0) will be factored into the grade. Furthermore, the cheating student s final grade will be reduced one full letter grade. A cheating student s final grade will be impacted significantly. In addition, cases of cheating and plagiarism will be submitted to and reviewed by the Dean s Office; more severe penalties may be imposed, up to and including expulsion from the Heinz School. Academic Dishonesty: Students are expected to maintain the highest ethical standards inside and outside the classroom. Cheating on exams and term papers (i.e. plagiarism and unauthorized collaboration) is obviously discouraged and will be treated appropriately. The usual penalty for violations is a failing grade for the particular assignment in question; however, in some instances, such actions may result in a failing grade for the course. Course Policies & Expectations COURSE POLICIES Students are asked to turn off cell phones in class, and to handle all necessary external communication during the regular break, that will occur midway during the class. Consuming food and bottled water/beverages during class is allowed. Students may use laptops to take notes, but are asked to stay off the Internet unless an online search or in-class project requires it.. COURSE REQUIREMENTS In order to be successful in this course, you must have completed all readings and / or assignments prior to class time (late submissions will only be accepted in cases of extreme emergencies) and actively participate in class discussions and activities. Doing so will not only result in you being able to score an excellent grade in the course but will also prepare you, as a manager, to respond to personnel issues with confidence. Each class period will include a lecture with time for discussion and exercises. Prior to each class you are responsible for submitting 2 questions/observations/comments (via to me at Allison Lee-Mann aleemann@andrew.cmu.edu based on the assigned readings by midnight the Sunday before our Wednesday Tuesday class period.

5 ABSENCES/ TARDY If you know you are going to be late or have to miss a class, please contact the instructor prior to class via or leave a message on their her voic ( ). Don't let tardiness or absences be a factor in your final grade. NOTE: Make-up work will be assigned in the event an emergency prevents the student from attending a class session.
