1 GES232 Instruction and Testing of TESOL Professor Lay 1 SAINT LOUIS GES232 Instruction and Testing of TESOL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Spring 2015 / Professor Lay MISSION STATEMENT Saint Louis Christian College pursues excellence in the Word and develops servant leaders for urban, suburban, rural, and global ministry DESCRIPTION This course examines various methods of assessing the four skill levels and various proficiency levels. Developing lesson plans and understanding classroom management are emphasized. Students are also directed to plan and participate in tutoring, instructional assistance, and/or classroom instruction in teaching English as a Second Language. RATIONALE The TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) certificate program equips and enables students to teach English to non-native English speakers in two primary environments in countries where English is a foreign language (EFL) and in countries where English is a second language (ESL). Teaching EFL will provide opportunities for students to supplement Christian ministries in countries outside of the United States and teaching ESL will help students with ministries among the immigrant population in the U.S. This foundational course is the first in a series of six courses required for the eighteen-hour TESOL certification. OBJECTIVES This course will help the student to satisfy these educational goals: 1. Be capable and reliable communicators of the Bible. Therefore the academic program at SLCC focuses on developing students communication and vocational skills. 2. Possess a permanent thirst for wisdom. Therefore SLCC promotes academic excellence and seeks to develop in students a desire for personal enrichment and lifelong learning. 3. Go anywhere in the world and do any ministry they believe God has called them to perform. Therefore SLCC focuses on advancing students gifts for ministry and challenging students to develop a global perspective on their life s work. This course will help the student to satisfy these divisional goals: 1. Given instruction in the communication skills, the student will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and will be able to use a variety of research and documentation techniques. 2. Upon completion of the study of humanities, the student will be able to analyze major components of culture and will be able to understand the differences between Christianity and other worldviews. This course will provide students with the opportunity to teaching English as a second language in a classroom or tutoring environment. The student will: 1. Describe the importance of reliability and validity in testing. 2. Design and administer tests assessing the four ESL skills.

Develop and implement lessons plans for multiple levels of proficiency and a variety of skills. 5. Engage in a minimum of 10 actual hours of ESL teaching/tutoring. 6. Prepare lesson plans including objectives, materials, assessment, and activities. 7. Assess the ESL student s level in four skills reading, writing, listening, and speaking at the beginning and the end of the tutoring sessions. 8. Meet regularly with the ESL director for feedback from tutoring observations. 9. Track the teaching sessions with a weekly journal. 10. Develop an ESL profile of the student including skill level, age, first language, and other relevant background information. 11. Reflect on the tutoring field experience including the student s teaching experience, progress of the student, goals met, and value of the experience, recommendations and other relevant information. Set up a time to take the ESL COMPASS exam (Reading, Writing, and Writing Section) in the Hundred. 2. Take the test in one setting. 3. Bring a copy of the results to class. 4. Reflect on the results of the test. Do you believe the test accurately measures your ability? Why or why not? Do you like taking standardized tests? Why or why not? Evaluate one textbook of the skill you will be teaching using the criterion in the textbook, Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language, 3 rd edition. Appendix A ( ). A copy will be on reserve. Include the information for each lesson plan author, date, location, level, audience. 3. Choose one of the skills you will be teaching and write a brief evaluation (200+ words). 4. The portfolio is to be assembled using the following criteria. You will design an electronic portfolio. Section One: Cover Letter (10 points) 1. Write a short introduction to the portfolio, including a table of contents, and an acknowledgement of those who helped you through the process. Prepare an overall 10 hour lesson plan for your tutoring sessions. Use the template on page 410 of the textbook as a template. This plan can be set up as follows: o 5 weeks of teaching / 1 hour session / 2 days a week o 4 weeks of teaching / 1 hour 15 minute session / 2 days a week o 3 weeks of teaching / 1 hour session / 3 days a week (you would need to add the additional hour somewhere in the 3 weeks o 3 weeks of teaching / 1.5 hour sessions / 2 days a week (you will need to set up an additional hour of teaching) The ten hours of teaching do not include the initial evaluation meeting when you are assessing the student s level, needs, and interest.

8 GES232 Instruction and Testing of TESOL Professor Lay 8 I realize you will need to set up the tutoring plan around your student s schedule, but you need to explain to the student what will be most beneficial for him or her. If your student desires to do more than 10 hours, you may and you will receive extra credit. You will want to avoid these teaching sessions: o One hour a week for 10 weeks. o Five hours a week for 2 weeks. o 10 hours a week for 1 week. 2. Prepare 10 hours of lessons. The number of specific lesson plans will be determined by the schedule you work out with the student. For example, if you teach 2 one-hour sessions a week for 5 weeks, you will prepare 10 lesson plans; if you teach 2 one and a quarter hour sessions for 4 weeks, you will have 8 lesson plans. If you do not submit the lesson plans, it will greatly affect your teaching grade this assignment and the teaching assignment are integrated. A 50 Exceptionally meets the requirements for content. You will be evaluated on two teaching sessions using the following criteria for each session. One of the sessions will be within the first 2-3 hours, and the other session will be within the 7-9 hours. 2. You are to keep a teaching journal of each session, reflecting and commenting on each lesson. 3. You are to video tape one of the sessions (one hour session) to display on the electronic portfolio. 4. You are to provide pictures of the materials used for the video-taped session. Testing The College offers assessment writing and reading testing by means of the COMPASS exam. Students, after an evaluation by the professor, may be required to take the COMPASS exam for evaluation purposes. Resources Numerous additional resources are available to assist students online tutoring, online resource materials, and library resources. Students, after an evaluation by the professor, may be required to do additional assignments to supplement the course work.

(3) GPA under 2.0 at the College. (4) Two assignments receiving an F. (5) Absent 2 class periods. (6) Recommendations from another professor the student has had for class.
