2 Athletics and Recreation two of the many gifts from God. Grand Rapids Christian Schools is very pleased to be able to offer athletic and recreational programs carrying your child all the way from Preschool through 12th grade. This guide informs you of the many opportunities available and help you navigate your child s athletic experience to plan accordingly for your family. Any child from any school is welcome to participate in the Recreation Sports Program. You do not need to be a student at Grand Rapids Christian Schools to sign up! Grand Rapids Christian Schools believes very strongly that all athletes regardless of sport or ability level should have fun and improve their skills through quality coaches, instruction and facilities. We see our students as image bearers of Christ, living out the physical gifts with which God has blessed them. 4 ELEMENTARY RECREATION If you have any questions or concerns regarding any GRCS Recreation Sports Program, please contact Stacey Boender at or Handouts can also be found in a wall rack just outside the GRCS administrative offices. All students throughout the greater Grand Rapids community are encouraged to participate. FALL PROGRAMS FOOTBALL Boys 8yrs 8 th grade, Northern Rocket Football League $75 to play, $40 for Jersey / 8th graders are FREE (jersey is included) The mission of GRCYF is to teach the fun and fundamentals of the game of football. Every athlete will be given an opportunity for playing time. 5 FLAG FOOTBALL Boys 4 5 & 6 7yrs old $30 to play includes a T-Shirt (5 weeks) This is a 7-on-7 flag football program that is intended to generate interest in football by creating a fun and instructional experience. Volunteer Coaches are needed, please sboender@grcs.org Practice will be Tues. and Thurs. from 6 7pm at Gainey Athletic Fields starting Aug. 27 Games will be played on Sept. 14, 21, 28 at varying times on Saturday afternoons at GRCHS Eagles Stadium. Games will be held at Ada Christian School on 6206 Ada Dr. on Saturday mornings. Games will be played against our own GRCES teams, Ada Christian teams, and Rockford Christian teams. All players will meet at Ada Christian on Sept. 7. Volunteers are needed for coaching. Coaches receive 1/2 off registration fee. They will start with a few weeks of fundamentals, then move into drills and scrimmages and then a few weeks of games. Volunteer coaches are needed to help facilitate drills and coach teams. Come and learn the Majerle way! Our goal for Learn to Skate is to introduce the kids to skating and having fun on the ice. Our methodology includes playing fun games and having contests that anyone of any skill level can take part in along with allowing our future hockey players to pass the puck and score goals. We start each Learn to Skate session with the same format such that joining any session will allow your child to meet our goals for our Learn to Skate program. Session 1: Oct. 5 Nov. 16, 2013 Session 2: Nov. 23 Jan. 4, 2014 Session 3: Jan. 11 Feb. 22, 2013 Date/Time: Saturdays from 9am to 10am Site: Eagles Ice Center. Required Equipment: Helmet, skates and warm clothes. (A limited number of helmets and skates are available for loan for use at the beginning of each session. A limited number of rental skates will also be available at the rink. For the younger kids, warm substantially waterproof gloves along with insulated pants are recommended.) If you are unsure whether your child should be enrolled in our Learn to Stake, Cross-Ice or Mite program, please bring your child on any Saturday for an evaluation skate from 9am to 10am. 8 PRE-SEASON LACROSSE TEAM TRAINING Boys 3rd 8th grade MVP provides the coaches to teach stick work, speed & agility, teamwork. Future coaches are encouraged to attend. (25 players max) $100 per player 3rd 4th grade / $150 per player 5th 8th grade Dates: Jan. 16 Mar. 13 on Thursdays (no class 2/20) 8 weeks Time: 3rd 4th grade 5 6pm 5th 8th grade 6:30 8pm Site: MVP Sportsplex SIGN-UP DUE DATE: December 13 or until max is reached INDOOR LACROSSE Girls 5th & 6th Division / 7th & 8th Division Team cost: TBD (includes 8 games) Indoor play will be available for a fee during the fall and winter seasons for players in grades 5 through 8. Players can expect one night game per week without practices during this off-season play. Set: 7 players play at a time (including the goalie) Maximum of 15 players per team Games: January through February (8) Tuesday nights Sign-ups are taken through GRCS. Team jerseys are from GRCS 2013 spring outdoor season. New jerseys may be purchased for an additional cost and may be used for the outdoor spring season. SIGN-UP DUE DATE: November 9 SPEED, AGILITY & QUICKNESS CLINIC Coed 3rd 5th & 6th 8th grades Daimond Dixon, GRCHS Strength and Fitness Director, will be conducting a SAQ (Speed, Agility, and Quickness) program for middle school athletes. The training sessions are designed to increase athletes game speed, quickness and explosiveness in a competitive and fun group environment. 10 SPRING PROGRAMS COED T-BALL Coed current Preschool 1st grade $30 includes a T-shirt (4 weeks) Beginner-level program for both boys and girls in preschool through first grade. Games are played on a smaller field with tennis balls. Players must have own glove Volunteer Coaches are needed Games are played at GRCES field 4 5 year olds Wed. 5:15 6:15pm Sat. 8 8:50am 6 7 year olds Wed. 6:30 7:30pm Sat. 9 9:50am (One rain date, May 22 is built into the program) BE A SPONSOR! Company sponsorships of $150 are available Season starts Apr. 23 May 17 SIGN-UP DUE DATE: March 28 LACROSSE Boys $85 to play plus an additional $20 for a jersey, if needed. (3rd 6th are white and blue, 7th/8th are black) Join us for GRCS s 4th year of Lacrosse. No previous experience needed. Players must supply their own equipment. Games are played at various surrounding schools during the week and Saturdays. Practices are held two or three times a week. Equipment needs: shoulder pads, elbow pads, helmet, gloves, stick, cup and cleats. Online registration available at Sports. 11 LACROSSE Girls 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, 7th/8th grade The GRChristian Girls Lacrosse will be in its fourth year this school year. Opportunities for lacrosse play and instruction will be available for players at all skill levels throughout the year. The official spring season begins mid-march for players in grades 3rd 8th Players can expect 2 3 indoor practice opportunities per week before spring break, with games beginning after spring break During the spring season, players can expect approximately 2 evening practices and 2 3 evening games and/or Saturday tournaments per week Players are required to have their own mouth guard and face mask Sticks are available on loan during the season There will be a fee for playing this club sport. Please call Vicki Young with any questions. Look for bulletin announcements regarding sign-up opportunities. SOCCER Girls Preschool 4th grade $35 PreK K / $50 1st 4th grade all participants will receive a Tshirt *Coaches receive half off Pureplay and GRCES are offering a fun and exciting opportunity to use and develop the gifts God gave us for the glory of Him through the sport of soccer. Teams from Ada Christian, Grand Rapids Christian, and Rockford Christian will be made up of students from their own school, unless participation levels are low. Please note: Participation has been low in the past. If our numbers are not high enough we will not have a league. Decision will be made by March 10. Games: (6) Saturdays: April 19, April 26, May 3, May 10, May 17 and May 31. The first game will be at 9am and games will be scheduled every hour after that. No games on May 24. 12 TENNIS Girls 3rd 4th grade $45 - girls must provide their own age appropriate tennis racquet. This is a Learn to Play tennis clinic for girls. Class will meet immediately after school on the tennis courts. A healthy snack will be provided each day. Matches will be played between the girls towards the end of the session. 13 GIRLS IN TRAINING Girls 3rd & 4th / 5th & 6th grade (Limit 50 girls) $105 includes a the race entry fee, a race shirt, GIT shirt, new running shoes and backpack. This program is designed for girls who have a serious interest in getting active and building relationships. The Calvin College Women s Volleyball Team will lead a training program that will address all dimensions of health which will include physical, spiritual, emotional, mental and social training. The physical training will be a cross-training program which could include activities like swimming, running, volleyball and rock climbing. The majority of the physical activity will be running to train the girls to run/ walk a 5K race which will conclude the program. Throughout the 10 weeks the other dimensions of health will cover topics such as making healthy decisions, positive body image, nutritional topics, being a good friend and growing their personal relationship with Jesus. 21 EAGLES SPORTS ONLINE For all high school sports schedules, up-to-date game scores and more go online: ADVENTURE CLUB Be Outside. Be Active. Be Social. Be Challenged. Adventure Club offers students a chance to explore new activities in a fun, social environment. Noncompetitive, non-selective, and highly social, students can come as much or as little as they wish! The club meets weekly for mountain biking or climbing, and seasonal day trips include crosscountry skiing, downhill skiing, river paddling, and overnight backpacking.
