1 Install/Upgrade Instructions for using CompuLaw with Amicus Attorney 2010 Premium Edition Applies to: Amicus Attorney 2010 Premium Edition (If you use Small Firm Edition do not use these instructions. There is a separate document for Amicus Attorney Small Firm Edition users.) The Amicus Attorney-CompuLaw Link lets you create and modify CompuLaw Court Rules-based Events directly from your Amicus Attorney Files and Calendar. IMPORTANT: Effective December 1, 2009 the U.S. Courts have made some major changes to the way State and Federal holidays are handled when computing time deadlines. These changes have required CompuLaw to make significant modifications to their court rules engine software and court rules databases. If you are currently using CompuLaw with Amicus Attorney 2009 or an earlier version, you will not be able to process any Rules Updates received from CompuLaw after December 1, 2009 unless you upgrade both your CompuLaw and Amicus software as described in this document. 2 Overview Installation is a multi-step process that must be performed in the correct sequence. The following is a summary of the steps fully detailed later in this document: 1 If upgrading your existing CompuLaw, load any Court Rule Updates you purchased but have not yet loaded using your existing software. Then run your Date Maintenance process to update your deadlines. 2 Install or upgrade, and license Amicus Attorney (Earlier versions of Amicus are not compatible with CompuLaw Version 10.) If you have not yet obtained your Amicus software, contact a Gavel & Gown Software Sales Representative at Install CompuLaw Version 10 (also requires Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Express). 4 If upgrading, convert your old Court Rules data into the new SQL format. 5 Run the new Court Rules Maintenance application and register your CompuLaw software. It is important that you understand the entire process before starting. STEP 1 Install/Upgrade to Amicus Attorney 2010 If already using CompuLaw with Amicus Attorney 2009 or earlier: Perform the following steps in the order specified. This will ensure that your existing Court Rules are kept. After you update your CompuLaw software, you will not be able to load your old Court Rule Updates. 1 Load pending Court Rule Updates In your existing Amicus Attorney installation, you must load any Court Rule updates dated prior to December 1, 2009 that you have. Then run your Amicus CompuLaw Date Maintenance process and ensure that your CompuLaw deadlines are updated according to the current state of your purchased CompuLaw Court Rules. 2 Install Amicus Attorney Version 2010 (and convert your Amicus data from your earlier version), as instructed in the appropriate Install/Upgrade Guide, available from the Support > Technical Resource Guides section at The instructions include the requirement that you back up your CLAWDATA and CRDENG.VSN folders as detailed. If installing CompuLaw for the first time for use with Amicus Attorney: Install or upgrade to Amicus Attorney 2010, as instructed in the appropriate Amicus Install Guide, available from the Support > Technical Resource Guides section at Then proceed to Step 2. 3 STEP 2 Install Microsoft SQL Server Express The new CompuLaw software is Microsoft SQL based. You will need either SQL Server Express or a full-use SQL Server on the Amicus Application Server (which will contain the CompuLaw Version 10 SQL database). And you will also need SQL Server Express at each Workstation with Offline components where the user wishes to use the CompuLaw Link while Offline. NOTE: The SQL Server included with your purchase of Amicus Attorney Premium Edition is licensed as Runtime-Restricted Use for your Amicus application only and cannot be used for this purpose. Downloading and installing SQL Server Express: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express is available as a free download from the following Web page: Choose the Runtime with Management Tools download. Follow the instructions shown on the download page. Make note of the following SQL credentials that will be needed later: SQL Server name. If you have installed SQL Server Express, this will typically be in the format <computer name>\sqlexpress, where <computer name> is the name of the computer on which SQL Server Express is installed and SQLExpress is the SQL instance name. If you are instead using a full-use version of SQL Server, you will need to get the SQL Server name from your System Administrator. System administrator name (typically sa ) and password. STEP 3 Install the CompuLaw Software and Create the CompuLaw Database In this step, you ll install the CompuLaw Date Calculation software and create the CompuLaw database. This must be done on the Amicus Application Server (and on each Workstation with Offline where the user needs the CompuLaw Link while Offline). 1 Create a new folder named CompuLaw Database under the \Amicus folder. We recommend that you create it directly under \Amicus (rather than under an Amicus Attorney subfolder) to ensure it will not be uninstalled if Amicus Attorney is uninstalled or upgraded later. 2 Download the CompuLaw software from: Be sure to choose the Premium Edition Download. 3 Double-click the AmicusPremiumCLawUpdate.exe file and follow the instructions, installing the software to the default location supplied, which will be a CompuLaw folder within your Server location, typically: \Amicus\Amicus Attorney PE Server\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw. At a Workstation with Offline, install to the default location supplied, which will be a CompuLaw folder within the Amicus Workstation location, typically: \Amicus\Amicus Attorney Premium Workstation\Offline\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw 4 When asked to create the CompuLaw database, click Yes and follow the instructions. You will need your SQL credentials from Step 2. IMPORTANT: Do not select the Use Integrated Login checkbox. 4 When asked where to create the database, choose the \Amicus\CompuLaw Database folder that you created. STEP 4 Convert your Court Rules Data If installing CompuLaw for the first time: Skip this step and proceed to Step 5. If already using CompuLaw with Amicus Attorney 2009 or earlier: You will need to convert your existing CompuLaw Court Rules (and any User Rule Sets created by your firm) into the new SQL format. This process does not alter your existing copy of the Court Rules, but simply adds them into the new CompuLaw database. The conversion takes from several minutes to a few hours, depending on how many Court Rules you have. Performing the conversion 1 If Amicus Application Server is on the same computer where CompuLaw was used before, proceed to step 2 below. If Amicus Application Server is on a new computer: You will need to first install the Btrieve database engine: Copy the NCDRENG.exe file from the CLAWPROG folder on the old Server to a temporary location on the new one, and then double-click it to run it. (If running a 64-bit edition of Windows, contact Technical Support for assistance before proceeding.) Then copy the CLAWDATA folder and CRDENG.VSN file from the Amicus Attorney folder on the old computer to a temporary location on your new Workstation. Now proceed to Step 2. 2 Go to the \Amicus\Amicus Attorney PE Server\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw folder and double-click the file DCEBtrvToSQL.exe. 3 When prompted, specify the locations of the following items from your prior version of Amicus Attorney: CLAWDATA folder (contains your existing Btrieve data files, which are your Court Rules) CRDENG.VSN file (contains your old serial number) Installing at an Workstation with Offline components If installing the CompuLaw software at a Workstation with Offline, copy the converted CompuLaw data from the Server to the Workstation: 1 Copy the JSE.txt file (Jurisdictions) from the following folder on the Server: \Amicus\Amicus Attorney PE Server\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw\Data to the following folder on the Workstation with Offline components: \Amicus Attorney Premium Workstation\Offline\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw\Data 2 Use SQL Management tools to back up the CompuLaw Version 10 database at the Amicus Server, and then restore it to SQL Express at the Workstation with Offline components, replacing the CompuLaw database you created when installing CompuLaw there. 5 STEP 5 Run the Court Rule Maintenance Application In this step, you will run the Court Rule Maintenance application and create the supervisor. If you are new to CompuLaw, you will need to register the software with CompuLaw. 1 On the Amicus Application Server, go to the \Amicus\Amicus Attorney PE Server\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw folder and double-click the file CRDMaint.exe. At a Workstation with Offline, go to the following folder: \Amicus\Amicus Attorney Premium Workstation\Offline\SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw and double-click the file CRDMaint.exe. 2 You ll be asked to log into the application. The first user you log in as will be used to create a Supervisor user. The Supervisor user has complete access to all functions of the application. In the login dialog, enter the initials you d like to use for this user and click OK. This will display the User Information dialog. Make sure that the Supervisor option is checked, enter the user s name and password (the password is optional). Click Save to save the user information and return to the login dialog. Click OK to login as the Supervisor user. IMPORTANT: For future reference, make a note of the Supervisor user initials and password. 3 If you are using CompuLaw for the first time, you will need to register the software with CompuLaw. (You can skip this step if you upgraded and converted your CompuLaw.) a. Click the Misc option on the main menu and then select the Office Information option. b. Enter the information from your product registration printout that you received from CompuLaw and then click Save. 4 To facilitate the Live Update feature, create a folder (typically named Rule Updates) within the CompuLaw folder: \Amicus\Amicus Attorney \SmartClient\Server\CompuLaw. In Court Rule Maintenance, configure Live Update, specifying this folder as the location to which updates should be downloaded. IMPORTANT: You must ensure that any Court Rule updates are applied to the Server and all applicable Workstations. TIP: For convenience, we recommend that you create a Desktop shortcut for the Court Rule Maintenance program. Simply right-click on the CRDMaint.exe file and choose Send To > Desktop. That s It Once you are done with the install/update process, you can use Amicus Attorney to generate your Court Deadlines.
