3 Program Overview Global Health College desire is to offer a transitional (bridge) pathway for the R.N- B.S.N. prospect. GHC s definition of the transitional program refers to the R.N. who has an active RN license and has met all admission criteria. At the completion of the program, the graduate of the bridge program must have completed a total of 120 credits minimum. R.N-B.S.N. mobility track offers a creative curriculum for educating nurses to become competent in meeting the changing health needs of society. The student will be awarded 29 credits in transfer for general education and awarded 30 credits in transfer for nursing courses from an approved ADN program. Therefore, the student will take an additional 61 credits. 5 Admission Criteria GHC does not discriminate against age, sexual preference, race, color, religion, gender, disability, national origin, citizenship status, veteran status, marital status or any other class protected by federal, state or local law. Persons meeting the admissions criteria may attend any Global Health College program of his/her choice. Falsification of any admission materials or official college records may be cause for denial or cancellation of admission. Each applicant is required to complete the following satisfactorily before gaining entrance into the nursing program: Requirement Complete application College transcripts Complete an associate degree in nursing Achieve a GPA of at least 2.5 Current immunizations, including Hepatitis B (Waiver not accepted), MMR, Tetanusdiphtheria (Td), Varicella, PPD/chest x-ray, drug screens, flu vaccine and CPR certification required upon admission. Drug screen, criminal background check) Drug screening is to be repeated yearly or more frequently if there appears to be just cause. Students who refuse or fail the drug screen may be subject to dismissal from the program. Drug screen results will be retained in the student file and are considered confidential. 6 Resume Active RN license The faculty recognizes that the baccalaureate degree prepares the student to have a broad knowledge to fully understand the patient and family. Therefore, as the student progresses through the curriculum, the expectation is that he/she is able to use knowledge drawn from semester to semester. As a result, during semester one, the student enrolls and satisfactorily completes the required general education and nursing prerequisite courses, which include sciences, humanities and liberal arts. The student may complete the required courses within 2-4 semesters, as the student is allowed to take 8 weeks session courses. Table 1 displays semester one and semester two courses. 8 Student Learning Outcome 1. Patient Center: Assess and evaluate nursing care outcomes within the context of patients and their family values, preferences, and welfare. Communicate a professional philosophy that reflects self-government, support, impartiality, responsibility, and ethical decision-making in the provision of Patient-Centered Care 2. Teamwork and Collaboration: Communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals, families, communities, populations, and interdisciplinary team members, fostering open communication, mutual respect and shared decision making to promote optimal patient stability and eliminate health care disparities. 3. Informatics/Technology: Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error and support decision making 4. Evidence-based Care: Provide delivery of evidence-based care to patients and their family in a diverse health care setting. 5. Safety: Integrate processes and skills for critical thinking, management and leadership to encourage and incessantly improve the quality and safety of health care delivery in a global environment; 6. Quality Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiatives. Assimilate theories and concepts from nursing, the liberal arts, sciences, and humanities into professional nursing practice in a world of global environment/community. Grading System The purpose of training at Global Health College is to prepare the graduate for employment and success in his/her chosen specialty. Grading is based on a student s performance in assignments, exams, laboratory, and clinical experiences. Symbol A Excellent 4.0 ( percent) Description Indicates a superior grasp of material as demonstrated by excellent performance on assignments and examinations. AUD (Audit): B Good (80 89 percent) Indicates that the student audited this course and received no credit for the course Indicates a good level of proficiency. 8
9 C Unsatisfactory 2.0 (70 79 percent) Indicates unsatisfactory level of achievement. The course must be repeated. D Unsatisfactory -1.0 (60-69 percent) F Fail -0 (below 60 percent) Indicates marginal level of achievement. The course must be repeated. F indicates an unsuccessful achievement of course materials. The course must be repeated. I Incomplete (0): Indicates that a student has not completed all work required for the course because of some unusual event. Incomplete work must be made up. I grades may be given only with the approval of the instructor and the Executive Director. Incomplete work must be submitted no later than the second two weeks after the completion of the course. If the incomplete grade is not resolved by this deadline, it will be changed to an F and will be included in the cumulative grade point average. 9

11 Course Descriptions ANT 208 Introduction to Anthropology 3 Credits: Prerequisite: None: The course covers the biological anthropology in context of social and life sciences and the theory of evolution with a modern biological approach. Emphasis is taken on fossil records, ecology, genetics of individuals and populations, human primate relatives, human and primate adaption and human and primate behavior. ART Art Appreciation 3 Credits: Prerequisite: None: This course introduces the origins and historical development of art, including paintings, pottery and architecture of different periods and regions of the entire world. Each historical period s importance in the history of art is highlighted. ART Dance 3 Credits: Prerequisite: None: Introduces dance as an art form and adds cultural aspects of dances origin. National dances such as the square and swing dance as well as the jazz dance and modern dance forms are introduced with a blend of foreign dances such as salsa, meringue, tango, ballet and oriental belly dancing. Dances are practiced and examined, with analysis given to rhythmic structure and steps. Cultural elements of the dance are being reviewed with emphasis given on symbolism and its history. COM-201 Communication 3 Credits: Prerequisites: None. This 3 credit course will explore theories and models of Communication and examine human communication in a variety of contests including, interpersonal relationships, groups, intercultural and gender contexts, public speaking and public communications. ENG 302 Advanced English Composition 3 credits: Prerequisite: None This advanced course is the continuation to English Composition and is a three-credit course, which focuses on analysis and argument; while devoting specific attention to academic research writing. Students are required to effectively write by acquiring necessary fundamentals. Further emphasis is placed on critical thinking, grammatical and mechanical accuracy with proper essay form. HIS 201 World History - 3 Credits: Prerequisite: None: Introduction to World History is a three credit course dealing with the most substantial events in history from the Neolithic Period through the beginning of World War I. Periods are taught in chronological manner leading the student to have an understanding on how our past has shaped our present. HIS American History - 3 Credits: Prerequisite: None: The American History Course contains American history from the European discovery of the Americas through the Civil War. The goal is to give the student an understanding of American history, by 11
12 emphasizing the most historical, significant events which influenced the life of Americans and led to its current position in the world today. IT 203 Information Technology- 3 Credit: Prerequisite: None: This course develops the students proficiency in fundamental computer usage. It covers, but is not limited to topics such as, working in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other related Windows applications. LIT Introduction to Literature - 3 Credits: Prerequisite: None: This course covers literature in areas such as, poetry, song, play, research papers, and essay and imagery. Literal styles and forms as well as works of authors are analyzed and interpreted. MTH 290 Quantitative Reasoning and Statistics 4 Credits: Prerequisite: None: This four credit hour course focuses upon the skills required for the utilization of scientific findings in evidence-based care. The conceptual basis of descriptive and inferential statistics found in the properties of the normal distribution, comprise the core of these skills. Using the normal distribution as a structure for understanding descriptive and inferential procedures, the course presents information necessary to the selection, computation and interpretation of basic statistics relevant to evidence based-care in the health sciences. Discussions of variables, measurement, tabular and graphic presentation of data precede the development of computation skills. NUR-303- Total Assessment - 3 Credits: Prerequisites: ENG 302: This is a three credit hour course. Concepts related to health assessment of patients are presented. This course prepares students to successfully identify the distinctive physiological, psychological, developmental, sociocultural and spiritual factors that decide the patient s need for individualized nursing care. Success in this course is based on the students working knowledge of basic concepts drawn from preparatory courses, which includes anatomy & physiology, communication and the humanities. Emphasis is on development of nursing skills to perform a holistic health assessment of the patient across the life span, including a health history and comprehensive physical examination. Levels of physical, cognitive and social functioning are analyzed and interpreted. Students practice health assessment skills in laboratory and selected settings. NUR-315 Transition to Professional Nursing 3 Credits: Prerequisites: ENG-302, MTH-290. This 3 credit course builds on previous knowledge and skills applicable to the practice of the professional nurse. Emphasis is placed on changes in the health care environment and the impact on the professional nurse s role. How responsibility and accountability issues relate to the professional nurse. The students will develop a professional portfolio for use throughout the curriculum and in the professional practice settings. NUR Cultural Understanding in Healthcare- 3 Credits: Prerequisites: ENG 302: This three credit hour course which provides the students with accurate knowledge and skills to work with diverse populations, develop cross-cultural competence, as well as 12
13 identify and develop culturally appropriate strategies in the United States health care delivery. Emphasis is placed on the influences of recent social, political, and demographic changes to explore the issues and perceptions of health and illness today. NUR Research Critique and Utilization - 3 Credit: Prerequisites MTH 290: This is a three credit hour course designed to provide the baccalaureate nursing student with an understanding of the research process and its contribution to nursing practice. An awareness of the interrelationships among theory, nursing practice, and research will result from class work. Building on concepts learned in statistics, mathematics and in previous nursing courses, students will become wise consumers of research findings and will be able to evaluate these findings for applicability to nursing practice. NUR 332 -Health Promotion throughout the Lifespan and Epidemiology - 3 Credits: Prerequisite: NUR 303 & NUR 325: This is a three credit course that focuses on educating the patient, family, community and self about physical fitness, good nutrition, and avoidance of health hazards. Health hazards include smoking, alcohol use, habitual drug use, driving, sexual practices and contraceptive use. The course will also delve into family relationships, risk management as well as coping and adaptation mechanisms. In this class, the student draws from previous classroom and clinical experiences to promote health. NUR Information Systems in Healthcare- 3 Credits: Prerequisites: IT 203: This Level III, three credit hour course, is offered during the student s senior year. Quality, Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), the American Nurses Association (ANA) and many other health care organizations have published the need for nurses to be proficient in information technology advances. GHC offers this course in computer and information sciences to manage and distribute information, data, and knowledge, in the practice of nursing. This knowledge prepares the student/ graduate nurse to better provide quality, safe, and effective care for patients. This course encompasses computing skills that are necessary in nursing including word processing, presentation software, spreadsheets, databases, mobile computer, and specialized electronic healthcare systems. NUR 427- Community Health Nursing and Case Analysis - 6 Credits: Prerequisites: ENG 302, MTH 290, NUR 303, NUR 325, NUR 330 and NUR 332: This 5 credit hour lecture and one credit hour clinical course, introduces the concepts of community health utilizing the population focused nursing process. Emphasis is on health promotion, risk reduction, and disease management in selected community settings. The student will use the framework and tools necessary to engage in evidencebased practice as he/she explores epidemiologic science. Topics include, communicable diseases, risk of common food-borne and water-borne illnesses, infectious disease, sexually transmitted diseases, and violence in the community as well as access to health care. Here, the student will complete 40 clinical hours at various community health agencies. In this setting the student will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of families within the context of a community. 13
14 Students will have the opportunity to analyze the impact of culture on health perceptions, interpretations, and behaviors of diverse groups. NUR 428 Collaboration among Disciplines 3 Credits: This three credits course is designed to introduce the student to the various professionals from public health, medicine, nursing, health services, administration, and other areas as they present their diverse perspectives on collaboration across the spectrum of the health care fields. Here, the student will complete exercises and assignments that provoke learning. NUR Leadership & Management - 3 Credits: Prerequisites: ENG 302, MTH 290, NUR 303, NUR 325, NUR 330 and NUR 332: This three credit hour course prepares the student to manage the patient, family, and the healthcare environment. Management of patients requires leadership and management skills and knowledge to effectively coordinate and execute quality and safe patient care. This course presents concepts of nursing leadership, management and professional development. Emphasis is on the synthesis of skills, knowledge, and attitudes to coordinate holistic, evidence-based care in healthcare organizations. PHI Adventures of the Human Spirit - 3 Credits: Prerequisites: None: This course provides the students an understanding of the concept of spirituality, spiritual wellbeing, faith, religion, hope, and their impact on healthcare outcomes. PHI Introduction to Religion - 3 Credits: Prerequisites: None: This course is designed to inform the student on the most known religions of the world. It also gives the student an understanding of different religious interpretations and views. The religions impact on the human mind as well as to human society is covered. Attention is given to theories of the psychological impact of religion and social change on society. PHI 209 Ethics - 3 Credits: Prerequisites: None: This three credit course covers the ethical and legal aspects of managing nursing care. The ethical component focuses on four areas which include, ethical awareness, ethical analysis/ethical decision-making, ethical issues in the financial service, and ethical management in an organization. This class provides the skills required to make reasoned responses to ethical dilemma, and ethical challenges. In addition, this class discusses the strategies for building an ethical culture within an organization. The legal component focuses on the understanding of laws governing nursing practice, protection of client s rights, and risk reduction. Moreover, in this highly participative course, the student is expected to complete both the reading material and written assignments prior to attending class. PSY Human Sexuality- 3 Credits: Human Sexuality is a 3 credit hour course. This course includes the study of physiological, psychological, and socio-cultural variables associated with sexual identity, sexual behavior, and sexual disorders. Human sexuality is examined as it is expressed in attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. 14
