EMV Transit White Paper The Ticket to Global Mobility Date: Author: Giesecke & Devrient
Contactless cards enable easy ticket purchases in public transit systems worldwide The year is 2014 and the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, are approaching. For one Munich couple Mr. and Mrs. Meyer it's an opportunity to fulfill a longheld dream and experience the Olympics live. This time, they finally managed to get tickets. Naturally, the couple are a little apprehensive as they prepare for the trip ahead. How will they cope with the public transport system in a country they've never visited before? As it turned out, remarkably well. To buy tickets for the subway, for example, they were able to use the same contactless transit cards that they use back home in Munich What was a pleasant surprise for the Meyers in Sochi is set to become the global norm in the next few years. Contactless payment systems provide a much easier way of paying for fares on public transport. Gone are the days when passengers had to struggle with complex pricing structures. Instead, the system automatically selects the cheapest fare option for each individual passenger. In the process, it eliminates one of the main reasons why people hesitate to use bus, subway, and local rail systems. Public transport can finally become an attractive and inexpensive alternative to private vehicles. An alternative that is urgently required Global population growth demands new public transport concepts The world's population is set to increase dramatically over the coming decades. According to current projections, it will reach a staggering 8.9 billion by the year Of these, between 60 and 70 percent will live in large urban centers that's more than the total population of the planet today. With this rate of growth, the cities of the world face total gridlock if private vehicle usage remains as prevalent as it is today. New transport concepts are needed in order to cope with rapidly growing populations. While a major expansion of public transit networks is an urgent necessity, it presents both transit operators and public authorities with an almost insurmountable problem. The necessary improvements in infrastructure will require millions to implement at a time when national and local governments faced with dwindling budgets are being forced to decrease or even cancel transport subsidies. It will also be impossible to generate the required investment by increasing fares as this will not only alienate existing users of bus, subway, and local rail networks, it will also create a barrier for new target groups. In order to ease the load on cities, public transport systems must be affordable for all, not just the affluent. It is therefore important to find ways of reducing costs, both to offset the loss of public subsidies and to enable adaptation of the infrastructure to suit the new demographic realities. 2 confidential - for internal use only
Faster and more cost-efficient contactless ticketing systems One way of achieving massive cost savings is for transit operators to switch to contactless payment card systems. Traditional contact-based solutions involve substantial maintenance overheads that can run into millions of dollars in the case of large urban networks. Conventional systems require regular replacement, repair, and cleaning of thousands of vending and validation machines. Contactless systems, on the other hand, offer major time and cost savings when it comes to maintenance. Contactless technologies are already deployed in a number of cities where the huge benefits have been amply demonstrated. In 2001, for example, Transport for London introduced its Oyster Card system, which enables passengers to use the same pay-as-you-go card across the entire public transport network. To pay a fare, the passenger simply holds the pre-paid top-up card against an electronic reader when entering a station or boarding a bus. The Oyster Card system removes all the inconvenience of buying tickets with cash, as well as the hassle of navigating a complicated fare pricing structure. There are shorter queues for tickets, enabling faster customer service. In addition, the cost of maintaining the card readers is about half that of conventional ticket vending and validation machines. The benefit for the operator: a major reduction in operating expenses. However, the many potential advantages of card-based payment systems within public transit networks can only be realized through global standardization, i.e. by enabling passengers to use a single transit card acquired at their home location on other public networks around the world. Convenient access to public transport worldwide using standardized chip-based payment systems Several years ago, three leading payment specialists Europay International, MasterCard, and Visa joined forces to create the EMV standard, a global specification for secure contact and contactless transactions via chip-based payment cards, PoS terminals, and ATMs. Today, the standard is maintained and enhanced by EMVCo, a public corporation currently owned by MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and JCB. Strong partnerships deliver efficient public transport worldwide Creating a global payment system for public transit networks using contactless chip-based cards requires close cooperation between expert partners with a range of specializations: confidential - for internal use only 3
- Transit operators with responsibility for the network infrastructure - Banks with responsibility for smooth and secure processing of cashless transactions between passengers and transit operators. These institutions issue chip-based cards that comply with the global standard specified by EMVCo - Payment providers within EMVCo, who cooperate on the technical specifications for electronic transactions between chip-based cards and readers EMV transit cards a system that benefits everyone Contactless EMV cards offer considerable benefits in the public transit sector for both users and network operators. For passengers, the advantages include greater comfort and convenience when using transit services, much shorter waiting times, and no need to fumble with change all of this on networks around the world. The benefits of simplified payment via a contactless EMV chip card are thus very tangible and real. For transit operators, it is no longer necessary to dispense or process tickets, while the ticket vending and back-end infrastructure can be greatly simplified with a focus on cost-efficiency. In addition, there is no need to provide a single-ticket option for occasional network users. Since the EMV card will frequently be used for payments, it is sure to acquire a "top-of-wallet" position. For the issuing bank and participating payment providers this promises a significant increase in revenue. By adding functions to the card, it is also possible to reach totally new customer groups. The retail sector will also profit greatly from the use of contactless EMV cards in public transit networks. Since the EMV card can be used for transactions anywhere in the world, a rise in passenger volumes promises additional income for retail outlets located close to stations and stops. In addition, retailers generate up to 25 percent more turnover through contactless card payments, which are approximately 70 percent faster than conventional cash transactions. Giesecke & Devrient specialist partner for EMV card solutions Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) has established a global reputation over several decades as a premium provider and developer of highly successful security technologies. As the world's leading producer of payment and transit cards, G&D is driving innovation while providing customers with extremely high quality, 4 confidential - for internal use only
tailored solutions using contact, contactless, and dual-interface cards (i.e. contact and contactless interfaces on a single card) made from a range of highly durable materials. In October 2011, G&D received the ICT Europe Award from respected global research institute Frost & Sullivan for its achievements in the development of innovative smart card solutions. As a recognized technology company in the security sector, G&D is certified by all payment providers. The company's card-based solutions comply with global standards and can therefore be used worldwide. Thanks to its strong customer focus, G&D has extensive experience of meeting the needs of both the payment sector and the transit industry. With its wideranging partner network covering all relevant sectors, G&D is ideally equipped to create efficient, secure, and cost-efficient solutions for innovative payment and security systems with minimal lead times. When it comes to creating viable concepts for the future of public transport, the innovative technologies from Giesecke & Devrient offer completely new possibilities that can accommodate future demographic, economic, and geopolitical change. Fast forward to 2018 and the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. This time, the Meyers are leaving Munich with total peace of mind. Using their EMV cards for all payments, they take the train to Munich Airport, where they buy magazines and candy before boarding their flight. With an eight-hour stopover in London, there's time for a quick sightseeing tour of the city. Here, they use their EMV cards to travel on the London Underground, go shopping in Regent Street, and take a ride on the famous London Eye. As an additional benefit of using the EMV card, they don t need to worry about exchanging euros for pounds. When they arrive in South Korea, they find it's just as easy to pay for subway fares, as well as hotel and restaurant bills. All transactions are processed and debited quickly and easily via the EMV card. Even when Mr. Meyer loses his card in a crowd, he doesn't lose his composure. Thanks to sophisticated security features, the non-transferable card can only be used by the holder. He simply reports the loss and a new card is issued locally. Which means the Meyers can look forward to that shopping trip in Seoul before boarding their flight back home confidential - for internal use only 5
