1 American Society Of Power Engineers [Pick the date] [Edition 1, Volume 1] ASOPE NEWSLETTER LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Byron Nichols At our recent 2010 National Meeting, in Roanoke Virginia, I was elected to the office of President of ASOPE. I accept this office with great expectations for our organization and respect for the license holders and fellow officers of the American Society of Power Engineers. As I write, we face the most difficult financial times I can remember during my lifetime. Even in these most difficult times; however, I do believe in the ability of our country to recover from this economic downturn during the coming months. I do not believe this recovery will not be primarily the result of any government program but rather from the strength and dedication of its individual citizens. I am always impressed by the dedication and perseverance of the working class in America. It is that dedication that will be key in allowing the resurgence of the industrial might that drives our economy. Never forget in times of economic downturns also comes opportunities. Those individuals using this chance to gain the skills and knowledge required in industry and facility operations will certainly be in a much better position to succeed in the future. The American Society of Power Engineers is your partner in this process. The licensed professional represents those who will achieve future success. The next few months will see us looking at our programs and focusing on those most in demand by today s employers. We will use this time to stream line and better align our efforts to serve and inform our license holders. You have my promise improve and advance our organization as we move forward. Regards, American Society of Power Engineers Byron Nichols, President Need A quote
2 We are Virginia Tech.We will prevail By Carroll Hooper As the Board of Directors of the American Society of Power Engineers stood silently looking at the 32 Memorials, one could only think back! The morning of April 16, 2007 dawned blustery with snow flurries. This is very much what one might expect of the unpredictable spring weather in this small town of Blacksburg, Virginia. In this rural area, many of the students were just getting ready for another day of classes and assuming it to be another day in their life as a Virginia Tech student. Little did anyone know this day would go down as the worse massacre and the deadliest peacetime shooting incident by a single gunman in United States history, on or off a school campus. At the end of the day, 33 people would be dead including the gunman who took his own life and 15 others would be wounded. Families, friends and even a Nation would be changed forever. One deranged mind would change a culture as no one had done before. world. The President and our First Lady of the United States of America flew to a convocation at Tech, the New York Yankee s contributed $1,000, and promised to play an exhibition game at Tech, flags flew at half-staff at Howard University, a bugler at Texas A&M blew taps and prayers were said by people all over this world for the victims and their families. The convocation filled the basketball coliseum and spilled over into the football stadium. There was eeriness, inexpressible grief and a void that needed to be addressed. That fulfillment came when English Professor and resident poet Nikki Giovanni delivered her comments to the students and concluded, We are Virginia Tech, We will prevail, We are Virginia Tech, We are Virginia Tech, We will prevail. This was followed by Let s go Hokies and for many, the horrible feelings that had been held inside erupted into tears and hugs and an everlasting dedication to prevail and go ahead with their lives. This BOD of ASOPE was having their National Meeting in Roanoke, Virginia on September 8 &9, 2010, and some of the proud members decided everyone should visit this outstanding Institute of higher learning. We toured the Power Plant on campus with Byron Nichols serving as our guide in the Plant that he manages. This was followed with visit to the memorial and concluded with dinner at the Skeleton Conference Center on Campus. The BOD was impressed with beauty of the campus with its theme of Hokie Stone and the vast size of the campus. In the days that followed, this tragedy touched every corner of the globe. Today we are all Hokies became a common thread throughout every college campus in the US and into many foreign countries. Condolences came in from every corner of the Hokie Stone Some interesting tidbits about the Institute:
3 Virginia Tech has a rich history with the Corp of Cadets. Over 12,000 of our best have served in wars from World War 1 through Operation Iraqi Freedom and our men and women have been awarded 7 Medals of Honor (only West Point and Annapolis have more) and 18 have received the Distinguish Service Cross or Navy Cross. Their devotion to this country has never wavered and stand ready to always stand up to the University s motto UtProsim (That I may Serve). The civilian side of the university has been just as outstanding. The graduates have touched every element of our society from outer space to the Professional athlete. The Engineering department was recently named to the top 10 Engineering Schools in the country. Other Departments have won too many awards to name. Yes, this is one proud University and is made up of students that still have rural America as one of their Ideals. You know, God knew what was coming to the University that morning. He just picked 32 of the best. Carroll Hooper Class of 64 Region 2 News By Ron Nuoffer Region 2 has been growing at a fast rate. From January 2010 to present we have administered close to 600 exams with about 450 new power engineers and 150 upgrades to higher licenses. With the economy being in bad shape and unemployment over 9.5% there a lot of people looking for new careers and going to technical schools for HVAC and Boiler certifications. The local utilities are all looking to fill the massive Baby Boomer exit from the job market and there are very few unemployed licensed power engineers to fill these jobs. One utility in Wisconsin expects to hire about 500 power engineers in the next 3 to 4 years due to retirements. Most utilities around the state are in the same shape so there are plenty of opportunities for power engineers. We have been contacted by a power plant superintendent in Nebraska who is looking into starting a training program for his utility. Nebraska does not currently require boiler operators to be licensed but this person came from a state where licenses are required and know the value of having licensed knowledgeable employees. I will be meeting with him in Omaha after the holidays to help him get this going. He currently hold a NIULPE license but feels our program has more to offer. We are in the process of getting ready for the February 2011 Plant and Facility Manager annual trade show in Milwaukee. This will be our third year with them and we have made quite a few contacts through doing the show. In September we also attend the annual State Of Wisconsin Heating Plant Convention.
