Deliverable:- Report with roadmap & recommendations, Nov 2009 What is Power Electronics (PE)? Technologies for converting, controlling and conditioning the flow of electrical energy from the source to the load by means of power semiconductors in the most efficient manner

4 1. What PE opportunities would this ELSA bring? Technical If packaged /worded correctly* will encourage PE people to collaborate more e.g. power supply + high efficiency lighting + energy demand management + building controls people will also see benefits of working with PE community and involve them more Some ideas listed on next slide Inter-operability of devices and systems will also improve Business Economies of scale:- More widespread use of PE components, devices, systems will drive down their cost and reduce engineering installation effort (retrofit + new systems) Incentives:- Commercial incentives for creating energy positive neighbourhoods will positively bias selection & development of energy efficient PE solutions * will explain in a later slide

Creation of protocols to standardise access to and actuation/control of HVAC systems 4. Standardization of communication protocols between converters/power system 5. Demonstrator showing energy savings (technical and commercial) from wireless retrofit of HVAC system with smart BEM & VSD (variable speed drive) 6. Demonstrator showing energy savings from wireless retrofit of lighting system with smart BEM & hi efficiency LED technology 7. Development of efficient power distribution architectures, e.g. HVDC 8. Development of WBG semiconductors (Wide Band Gap) more efficient, more reliable, etc. 9. Improved converter design:- power density, reliability, modularization, bi-directional DC/DCs 10. Batteries:- higher density, faster charge, develop better protocols accelerate adoption of green cars 11. Electric engines:- Expand use of these beyond green cars 12. Smart electricity grids and their interfaces with vehicles. All of these use some element of power electronics/control.

Technical Interoperability of devices and systems :- Fire, security, safety, building controls (HVAC, lighting) Fragmentation of PE industry Fragmentation of construction industry esp. in building automation/control Lack of experienced engineers and scientists in Europe Lack of flow between PE and other industries (e.g. development and use of WBG components) Economy Reduce cost of energy efficient PE solutions Reduce cost of installation and maintenance of BEM systems Cost Lack of standard life cycle business models, esp. for retrofit Difficult to effectively scale demonstrators into widespread deployments (cost, time, resources) Policy No unified voice from PE community to influence research initiatives Currently no pure PE orientated research topics Public awareness & acceptance Lack of awareness how PE can enable energy positive neigbourhoods Lack of awareness by PE of how to integrate into related activities (e.g. PPPs) PE community can provide leadership (if empowered) PE can support
