1 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Bring Your Own Device Windaroo Valley State High School Student BYOD

2 Windaroo Valley State High School supports the appropriate use of BYOD s in learning. When used well, BYOD s have the potential to aid learning and assist students in managing their schedules. The term BYOD refers to digital technology devices such as ipads, tablets and laptops that are to be used in class as a learning device. Laptops in the 1:1 Laptop Program are covered under a different section. Students may use BYOD s in our school- learning environment, providing they use these devices in accordance with this policy. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the withdrawal of permission to use BYOD s at school. Accessing the Internet and the school s wireless network BYOD s may be used at school by students to access the Internet via the school s wireless network. Other connections including 3G and 4G are not to be used at school. Accessing the Internet independently of the school s proxy servers (i.e. personal ISP) is not allowed. This is to ensure cyber safety is maintained in the school environment. The school will provide information regarding connecting your BYOD to the school Internet and . The school will provide limited technical support for BYOD. This is detailed below. Responsibility 1. The use of BYOD s in the learning program will be under the direction and supervision of the class teacher, will be for the purpose of enhancing purposeful and planned learning experiences. 2. The school accepts no responsibility for damage, loss or security of personal property including BYOD s. 3. Students who bring BYOD s to school are responsible for the safe keeping of their devices and must follow the information technology acceptable use agreement (page 28 of parents handbook) 4. The decision to provide a BYOD for use at school should be made by parents or guardians. 5. The school s Internet facilities are not to be used to download non- learning related audio/video files, programs and content. 6. BYOD s are to be charged at home and be ready for use at the beginning of each school day. The school does not have any charging facilities. 7. Students are responsible for backing their own devices. The school does not provide backup for personal devices. 8. Technical support limited to advice on connecting the device to the wireless network. Software installation, if install disc and proof licence agreement are supplied. Hardware failures will need to be taken to the vendor.

3 Security and Acceptable Use Conditions 1. A hard carry case/bag is to be used to protect your BYOD when travelling to and from school and around the school. 2. All BYOD users should not use their devices in any manner or place that is disruptive to the normal routine of the school. 3. The use of BYOD must not be used to invade someone s privacy or to bully another. 4. You must not allow anyone else to use your BYOD. You must not tell anyone your account name and password. 5. Permission must be obtained before any recording or photographing takes place and before any recordings or photographs are disseminated to others or uploaded to a website. 6. Even where consent for recordings or photographs is obtained, the school will not allow any transmission of data that is done to cause embarrassment to individuals or the school, for the purpose of bullying or harassment, including racial and sexual harassment, or where without such intent a reasonable person would conclude that such outcomes may have or will occur. 7. Students should not create, participate in or circulate content that attempts to undermine, hack into and/or bypass the hardware and/or software security mechanisms that are in place. 8. Intellectual property and copyright needs to be observed at all times. BYOD s are not exempt from this. 9. The school reserves the right to inspect BYOD s periodically if it is suspected that inappropriate material is on the device and we also reserve the right to hand it to the police. Device specifications BYOD s should have the following minimum specifications 1. Wireless connectivity, CPU minimum i3, 4Gb RAM 2. OS at least Windows 7, OSX10.6, Android 4.1 or IOS 6 3. Hard case for protection. Adequate insurance against damage and theft. Check manufacturers warranties and extended warranties 4. Some devices that cannot be connected to non- wireless households and may require 3G. 3G is not permitted to be used at school. 5. Minimum 9 inch screen 6. Headphones to allow students to work on independent activities.

4 Students are required to install apps for learning These examples are recommendations only, not a definitive list other apps maybe needed from time to time. Be aware that lite versions of an app may not give full functionality required in class. You would need to check with the teacher. Students will require apps that fulfil a specific function. 5 WINDAROO VALLEY STATE HIGH SCHOOL BYOD Agreement - Student This BYOD agreement is to be signed by a parent/guardian and student and returned to school prior to the approved device being used at Windaroo Valley State High School. The student and parent/guardian must carefully read this policy before signing it. Any questions should be addressed to the school and clarification obtained before signing. This agreement can also be found on our school website. In signing below, I / we accept the rules and regulations of Windaroo Valley State High School as stated in the school s policies and: Accept all school policies and guidelines as per the School s Responsible Behaviour Plan, including STAR rules (pages 32 and 33 of parent handbook) and acceptable use of technology agreement (pages 6 and 28 of parent handbook) Understand my responsibilities regarding the use of a BYOD and the wireless network Understand and agree to follow the conditions and responsibilities detailed in this BYOD Understand that failure to comply with the BYOD charter could result in the loss of permission to use a BYOD at school Windaroo Valley State High School accepts no responsibility for the damage, loss or security of personal property including BYOD s Agree to contribute $80 per year paid upfront for my child to access school network and internet Student s name Signature of student Date Parent / guardian s name Signature of parent / guardian Date Designated school representative s name Signature of school representative Date
