1 Goodwood Cricket Club The plan is underpinned by important values and beliefs relating to the participation of all age groups in local sport and recreation programs. Recognition of the concept of lifelong participation is commendable and we are trying to live that message at our club. The key message that participation is about physical, mental and social health and well being of individuals and communities is clear and strong, as it should be. This leads to an acceptance of a diversity of activities and shared use of space. While the concept of 'sport' is defined more easily than 'recreation' which is much broader and comprises both active and passive activities, it is the wide range of offerings that has meaning to participants. We believe Council should pursue that goal in balance, without detriment to the clubs and organisations that have served the community successfully for many years. We believe the five Guiding Principles provide the basis for clear goals and actions by the Council to meet its responsibilities to the community but they also send a message to all participating clubs and organisations to administer and promote their clubs for the right reasons. The success of any such Plan is reflected in how well it is promoted and 'sold' to the community. We look forward to participating in that phase. As a club operating within the parameters of the Unley City Council policies and plans we would ask ourselves at this stage whether we would fit the Plan? I am pleased to say on behalf of our club that our purposes and guidelines for participation are compatible with those of the Draft Sport and Recreation Plan. The feedback highlights the contribution of clubs to the draft Plan and draft Policy. No changes to the draft documents are recommended. A sentence will be added on page 16 to explain the context of the information: Key areas of participation in 2015 and key areas of participation projected to Based on City of Unley and Australian Bureau of Statistics data. 2 Comment raised regarding the sport and recreation snapshot on page 16 if a sport or activity is not ticked, particularly in the projected column, does that mean it has less participations and importance placed on it? Forestville Eagles Basketball There also appears to be no recognition that Goodwood Cricket Club is a strong club, with high participation and success that has been sustained over a long period. The showgrounds throughout the year remain severely underutilised (and not just in a basketball stadium sense). In regards to basketball my overall comments are the fact that from as an active sports program basketball actually need s less schools with either 1 or half a court. We have the ability to lure large sporting events if we can increase the current 3-court stadium at Wayville. The plan mentions a need for increase multi use facilities and also highlights the fact that there is no domestic basketball competition for the City of Unley. In addition to this Currently there are no basketball stadiums within 30 mins of the Adelaide CBD that can hold national tournaments or tournaments of any decent size. Increasing Wayville sports stadium to be a 5-6 court stadium allows a number of these issues to be resolved and then can begin to entice netball, volleyball, table tennis, wheelchair rugby, wheelchair basketball, European handball etc. whilst also allowing the city of Unley to run its own domestic comps (or we run it for you) In terms of the specific s of the plan, basketball (page 20 of your plan) participation at state level is higher than previous years (refer to Basketball SA annual report. Edit page 20 of the draft Plan to reflect comments regarding basketball participation at the State level, and investigating increasing the size of the Wayville stadium, in conjunction with the key stakeholders.

3 Basketball SA are the one s who lease the basketball stadium from the showgrounds, Forestville (Eagles Basketball Club) have nothing to do with it other than the fact that it is our home stadium, our office is there and we get to use it on Sunday. Tennis SA Tennis SA (TSA) welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback to the Sport and Recreation Plan. More importantly, TSA is pleased to acknowledge our support for the plan and is encouraged by the prospect of continuing to work with Council to grow and strengthen our partnership to ensure tennis has the best opportunity to continue to grow and develop within the municipality s parklands and open spaces. Furthermore many of TSA s objectives, such as increasing participation and improving the health and social wellbeing within the community are mirrored by the Plan. TSA is in favour of the strategic principle adopted by the City of Unley as these support our four pillars (Accessibility, Community Benefit, Sustainability and Accountability) to underpin the working relationship between TSA and the Council. Tennis SA (TSA) welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback to the Sport and Recreation Policy. Tennis SA (TSA) will continue to engage with the City of Unley to workshop our four pillars of relationship development (Accessibility, Community Benefit, Sustainability and Accountability) in conjunction with the five strategic principles highlighted by Council (Participation for all, Optimal facilities and optimal use, Partnerships, Financial sustainability, and Involving our community). TSA is committed to offering a range of support services towards the achievement of these joint objectives. Through an interactive environment, TSA aim to share how we can further promote effective venue management and participation in community tennis. With this in mind, TSA believe that we are at the forefront of participation and venue developments for tennis and would anticipate that all The feedback highlights the links of the draft Plan and draft Policy with State sporting organisation plans. 4 aspirations for tennis within the municipality will lead to continued partnership with TSA. Your Say Unley respondent My particular priorities are for walking and cycling. I note that the Draft strategy mentions walking and cycling (e.g. Theme 1.2). I support this. I note that the existing cycling paths (e.g. Porter Street) are well-used and the walking path along Windsor Street is also well-used. I would encourage more of these to be developed as, whereas many people don't play sport actively, most people walk. I suggest that there would be merit in exploring cross-council initiatives. As an example, Unley Council makes continuing investments in art and culture. This suggests a possibility of a walking trail featuring artwork. One could envisage a sculpture competition with works spaced along a walk, and passing near cafes etc: potential for art and culture investments, plus walking developments to support economic developments in the City of Unley. Taking this a bit further, the walk could extend across the parklands and into the city of Adelaide. Much as Bondi has its sculpture by the sea, so Unley/Adelaide could have an art/culture walk. Perhaps linked to SALA but all-year round, with the sculpture works for sale. To implement this may not require too much in the way of new funding; and the walk itself may simply require signage rather than extensive modification as occurred at Windsor Street. The popularity, importance and benefits of walking and cycling and reflected through the draft Plan (page 6, 17 and 18), and in action 1.2 (page 29). It is recommended that additional text be added to page 18 to highlight Council s role in enhancing the experience and encouraging people to walk and cycle in the City of Unley. I think the Council needs to do more that just comment on supporting Hockey SA and have a plan for the Forestville Hockey Club. Key points raised during discussion included: The draft Plan is informative, accurate and attractive document. Some confusion about the projected areas of sports participation (page 16). Primary schools have a community use agreement with the Council, not the Colleges. The current status of the 5-year plan and the partnership with the Adelaide City Council for utilisation of the south Park Lands. Clarification of the definition of iconic playground (page 30). Edit grammar on page 27 ( to ensure resources are used in optimally ). Formatting changes (such as font size and colour). Sport and recreation is a key contributor to improving mental and social health, highlighted through evidencebased research, particularly to combat depression. o This point should be strengthened in the draft Plan. o The role of sport and rec in recovery from illness o Not until people have a scare do they act seriously and get active and participate We need to motivate people to be physically active and do Plan. Council has made a commitment to advocating for and supporting Forestville Hockey Club and this is reflected in the draft Plan (page 20 and action 3.1 on page 31) and are working with the club to develop and implement workable solutions. Adelaide City Council (Administration) Strongly support the guiding principles, provision of infrastructure to cater for the changing nature of sports participation, a physical activity focus on Council s community grants program, active travel initiatives and partnership opportunities Consider acknowledging the high use of the Adelaide Park Lands by City of Unley residents, particularly on page 16. Adelaide City Council is approaching the current review of the Adelaide Park Lands Strategy by catchment rather than Council and this aligns to the approach of the Living Active Plan. There is an opportunity to highlight the proximity of the Park Lands to the City of Unley. Consider including the Adelaide Park Lands Management Strategy, Active City Strategy and Smart Move Strategy in section 3. Consider inclusion of partnership opportunities for community courts and the SAUCNA netball complex (park 22). The information on page 16 refers to facilities and use within the City of Unley as a snapshot and adding more information to this is not recommended. It is recommended that the high use of the Adelaide Park Lands by City of Unley residents be acknowledged on page 23, in section 5.3. We will investigate making changes to the map on page 5 to include the South Park Lands and other adjoining council areas. Include one paragraph on page 13 referring to key Adelaide City Council documents, to reflect the importance of the Park Lands to the City of Unley. Include reference to partnership opportunities with Adelaide City Council to provide courts (particularly

9 The Plan recognises high participation sports (i.e. soccer) but does not provide a clear direction to address this need. The Plan identifies a partnership opportunity for hockey and an iconic playground, however relatively minor cost provisions are made for these initiatives in the 5-Year financial plan. It is not clear if active travel is addressed in another (City of Unley) planning document. There could be an opportunity to include current and future plans more clearly and/or in a map form. for netball), on page 24 (to meet future demand for netball courts). Page 25 also summarises facility provision beyond the City of Unley and acknowledges the opportunities beyond our borders. Whilst we recognise high participation sports (e.g. soccer), clubs and the peak body (FFSA) has not approached the City of Unley with a request or a plan for facilities. The FFSA acknowledge the limited space in the City of Unley and recognise there are opportunities at existing sites that the Living Active plan identifies, including Ridge Park, Orphanage Park, Goodwood Oval (pending the outcome of the hockey pitch investigations) and the Showgrounds. The FFSA also identify the South Park Lands for future soccer developments. Funding allocations for a dog park and new hockey infrastructure are still to be determined (as outlined on page 34). It is recommended that a comment be added relating to funding for hockey, as the scope for this project is still to be determined.

10 The funding allocation for an iconic (destination) playground is subject to the project scope and will be in addition to asset renewal and other grant funding (as stated on page 33). Planning for active travel infrastructure is directed by the Open Space Strategy (currently in draft), and the Living Active plan identifies strong links to this Strategy. A review of Council s Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan will be undertaken in mid-late It is recommended that reference to this plan be included on pages 13 and 15. Millswood Croquet Club The Club outlines their current provision of two full-size and one under-size lawns and highlights their desire for: four full size lawns a modern, upgraded clubhouse upgraded sports lighting to meet current standards more off-street car parking and upgraded irrigation The Club highlights the growth experienced by the Club and expects this to continue. The plan acknowledges the growth of the Club and provides appropriate actions to implement the Millswood Sporting Complex improvement plan. No changes to the Plan are recommended.
