5 UWF majors require a minimum of 120 semester hour credits, including a minimum of 48 semester hour credits at the 000/4000 level, and a minimum of 0 in residence at UWF (important for transfer students to note.) At least 9 of those must be taken during the summer semester. Some upper-division philosophy courses are offered during the summer, but not all, and on various schedules. Please discuss with your adviser and plan accordingly. UWF majors are required to complete 12 hours in total in courses designated as satisfying the Florida Gordon Rule Statute. Please consult the UWF catalog for a list of courses satisfying the Gordon Rule requirement, and note that there are many philosophy courses on that list. Students in all UWF majors must complete in a course designated as satisfying the Multicultural Requirement. Please consult the UWF catalog course a list of such courses, and note that there is one Philosophy course on that list. As the list of approved courses is regularly updated, please check each year and discuss with your adviser how the course you select can be applied to your graduation plan. Philosophy majors at UWF are required to complete 0 hours in upper-division philosophy courses, including 21 hours as specified above along with 9 hours of philosophy electives. Any remaining electives may be taken in Philosophy or in courses in other departments. Other requirements for UWF Philosophy majors include: 1. Capstone Project: details may be found on the UWF Philosophy Website at Students are encouraged to begin panning their Capstone Project early, and to discuss those plans with their advisor regularly. 2. Exit Survey: To be completed in the final semester at UWF. The survey may be completed online from our website at The Philosophy Department offers a Certification in Applied Ethics. This certification will provide students with a thorough understanding of the moral world for their professional and personal lives. The program is interdisciplinary; it builds on ethics courses taught in the Department of Philosophy and on courses with ethics-related content found throughout the University of West Florida. The Certification offers a balanced, comprehensive program that will provide students with an understanding of moral complexities in their field. Many philosophy majors are able to satisfy this requirement simply by taking the courses in the major, along with one or two others. For further information on this program, please see the department website at Note that any course taught by the Department of Philosophy may be used toward the degree, either as specific major requirements or as major electives. This includes courses with the following prefixes: PHI, PHH, PHM, and PHP. Philosophy majors have holds placed to prevent their registration until they have met with their faculty adviser or department chair.
