Towards a European Strategy for Cyber Physical Systems Concertation Workshop on Mixed Criticality Systems and Multicore MultiPARTES Dr. Salvador Trujillo IK4 IKERLAN
Project General Information Project full title: Multicore Partitioned Systems Coordinator: IK4 IKERLAN (Salvador Trujillo) Starting/ending date: Sep 2011 / Aug 2014 Project major partners: TUWien, UPVLC, Alstom Wind, VisualTools, UPM, Fentiss, Trialog, Teletel Type of project: FP7 STREP Budget Total: 4 M
Project Description Motivation Why is this project necessary? Multicore partitioning for mixed criticality systems based on hypervisors with model driven approach Whatare the research needs? Heterogeneous multicore virtualization Assessment, validation, and performance Model driven development Hardware virtualization mechanisms How will the problems be solved by the project? Provide an open source hypervisor for partitioning Validation/performance toolset for demonstrators Development toolset based on model driven engineering Application & evaluation to wind power, visual surveillance, space and automotive
Project Description Objectives What will the project achieve and deliver? Goal To develop a multicore platform virtualisation layer for mixedcriticality systems. To propose a methodology to enforce the rapid development and production of new applications based on partitioned systems To provide different views to be compatible with specific standards in different sectors To develop methods and tools to support the application development Status Released internally. Under use case evaluation Under development. Initial evaluation by use cases Evaluating different sectors with mixed requirements Partially completed and under development
Main Technical Activities Describe the main technical challenges and the solutions the project is working on? Multicore partitioning via hypervisor virtualization Heterogeneous multicore Assessment of temporal interference Performance under demanding scenarios (algorithms) Exploring boundaries towards certification with certification bodies (TÜV wind power safety concept) Metamodels and tools to ease partitioning Hardware virtualization mechanisms
Main Outcome and Results What are the main benefits/final results for the EU industry? Open source solutions freely available for mixed criticality: XtratuM hypervisor + tools Evaluation in different sectors (others may get acquanted of results/lessons learned/limitations How will these results be used? European industry to leverage on multicore for integrating mixed criticality systems What is the impact of these results on future research and development and choice of technology paths? Hypervisor as an alternative solution Need to strengthen the methodological part Need to define hardware virtualization mechanisms
Exploitation Results What are the measures for the exploitation of project results? Mixed criticality technology is used to integrate more functionalities into current systems. Example Visual: integrate surveillance with NFC pay Alstom: integrate wind turbine with pitch control or human safety Space: integrate and isolate GNC with payload Automotive: integrate currently independent functionality How does the exploitation increase the impact of the project? Pitch the project towards market exploitation Considered in project decision making
Research Trends for H2020 What is the impact of the project results on future R&D in mixedcriticality or multicore systems? Multicore heterogeneous virtualization as an enabler for future work (DREAMS) Certification of product lines (DREAMS) Probabilistic approaches (PROXIMA) Model driven design (CONTREX) Have the results given a clear direction for the direction of the technology paths? What are the implications on technology choices? Are there any needs of action from other actors? Further implication of certification bodies (already in MultiPARTES, TÜV involved in DREAMS) Are there any research needs to be addressed in new research projects? Has the topic reached the competitive lever or is it still in R&D? Certification still an issue Trade offs dependability and security to be analyzed further Performance and temporal interference generalized?
