3 What is Server Virtualization Definition Server Virtualization is achieved by inserting a thin layer of software a hypervisor - between the OS and the underlying hardware to allow the hardware to host multiple OSs The Matrix analogy Servers are told what hardware they are on by the hypervisor, regardless of the real hardware What will run on it All modern Windows flavors Linux (most flavors) What it runs on X86 architecture Similar in concept to LPARS in the mainframe world What's driving the move to virtualizing servers?

7 Tape & Vaulting Strategies for Server Virtualization Overview: Guest Operating Systems can be stopped and written to a single large snapshot file written to disk DR Strategies Copy snapshot to remote SAN (Data Vaulting) Recovery: install ESX server(s) at remote recovery site, copy snapshot, then open snapshot Recovery: hot ESX servers at remote recovery site, snapshots copied to hot remote ESX servers, OS snapshots opened during recovery Recovery: SAN based replication of snapshots to remote recovery site, install or have hot ESX servers at recovery site, copy and open OS snapshots Backup snapshot on tape (Tape Recovery) Recovery: install ESX server(s) at recovery site and restore snapshot from tape, then open snapshot

8 VMWare recovery from tape vs. bare metal tape recovery Eliminates hardware matching/ driver problems when recovering from tape Restores entire OS As is, while tape recovery necessitates OS build, then data restore VMWare snapshots stored as a single large file, while standard tape backup backs up thousands of files per OS Much faster recovery of VMWare snapshot at recovery site, as tape systems must INDEX tapes first before performing file restore, VMWare indexing is 1 file per OS, traditional tape restore is thousands of files per OS.

11 VMWare Bad Guest Operating Systems Servers that use IDE drives, USB/Firewire drives, parallel / serial port devices (VMWare does howerver support parallel /serial ports), custom PCI devices Issue; since guest server accessing these hardware sources is virtual, device drivers may not work or suffer performance wise when accessing physically attached devices Examples; Fax servers, modem pools, worm or CD jukeboxes Servers using large number of Kernel Operations Issue; as kernel calls increase, performance overall decreases for the entire physical server Examples; Citrix, Proxy/ISA servers, Web servers hosting lots of static HTML content, SMTP Mail Gateways, Firewalls

13 A Look Ahead Datacemter Virtualization VMWare and Virtual Iron working on data center virtualization Goal is one management tool to manage virtualized storage, servers, and networks IBM Virtualization Engine for Servers and Storage Currently supports IBM P series servers, will support x86 servers Virtualized Applications VMware is solving the problem of redundant hardware, it is creating a dilemma of redundant OS software. Ejasent Moves applications across servers as needed, not the entire virutlized OS and App Trigence Doesn't put one operating system on top of another. Instead it provides a "container" around an application to make the service portable
