This year our FFA week was a blast! All the members came up with great new activities to do throughout the week. Some of those activities were chubby bunny, milk chug, egg toss, cow tongue football, nail driving contest and the District 5 President (Devon Alexander) came in to speck with our chapter. During his time he showed us how to manage our schedules and not procrastinate. During chubby bunny the challenge was to see how many marshmallows you could fit in you mouth and still say chubby bunny. Cow tongue football is just as it sounds, we actually played football with a real cow tongue, you might think its gross but we loved it! FFA week was a great success this year and with more members participating, it made it a fun experience. By: Mara Ledley

2 Issue 3 T e a c h e r B r e a k f a s t During FFA week, members and officers came in at 6:30 and cooked breakfast for the Riverside Staff. Breakfast included scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and pancakes. A small way to show the teachers that we appreciate everything that they do. P u b l i c S p e a k i n g, C r e e d s p e a k i n g a n d J o b I n t e r v i e w Public speaking contest is where students are require to give a 5 to 7 minute speech on a topic relating to agriculture. They are graded on eye contact, clarity, preparedness, dress and topic material. Ashley Todd competed in this contest and advanced to the district level. Creed speaking contest is where members are challenged to memorize the entire FFA creed and recite it in front of judges word for word. After presenting the creed, students are asked questions about different parts of the creed and are asked to explain what that part of the creed means to know they understand it. Ella Jackson entered into this competition and advanced to the district level. Job interview contest consists of creating a resume for a ag career that you had selected, then you go through an interview process. Bill Walter, Dana Bell and James Walters all entered into this contest and advanced to the district level. Congratulations to all who competed at the county and district levels.

Volleyball and Basketball The FFA officers completed their 2011 officer books and turned them in to be rated as a Gold, Silver, Bronze, or and Honorable Mention. This year our Reporters book received and Honorable Mention, done by our Reporter Ashley Todd. The Treasurer s book received a Silver ranking, done by our Treasurer Mara Ledley. The Secretaries book received a gold rating and was proudly done by our Secretary Morgan Robison. Congratulations to all of the officers for their hard work paying off on their books. 5 Issue 3 I n s i d e t h e c l a s s r o o m 8th Graders- Learned about what FFA and what agriculture is and how it relates to them. Currently they are drawing isometric and orthographic drawings. By learning these drawings students will apply their knowledge to draw their CO2 dragsters. Agronomy Plant Science- Currently learning about plant and crop biology. Students have conducted an experiment on how plants grow in warm and cold temperatures. They used the scientific method to complete their research on this experiment. The students in class have also been preparing the green house and transplanting flowers for the upcoming plant sale. Animal Science- Finished up a unit on digestive systems they learned and dissected a monogastric, ruminant and avian digestive system. Currently in class students are learning about the beef, dairy, swine, goats and sheep industry and major breeds. Ag mechanics- Students are finishing the unit on rebuilding small engines. Students had to tear apart their engine, take measurements, and had to put them back together poperly and start them. The students have to take a test over all the parts of an engine and identify them and their purpose. Next the class will learn about residential wiring. Ag business- Students are learning about the ag business industry and all of its factors. They learned about the law of diminishing returns, credit, profit loss statements, interest on items, loans and other business factors. Now currently the ag business class is making Adirondack chairs. Horticulture- Students learned about hydroponics and landscape and design. Students learned the botanical and common names of plants and they had to learn how to layout a design project. Students are currently using pro landscape software program on the computer. The students also drew out their design on paper then moved their idea to the computer. It taught the students how to group plants and how to landscape properly. By: Tanner Wiley

6 Issue 3 S t a t e D e g r e e!!! On Friday May 4th, Hillary Jackson and James Walters will receive their State FFA Degrees at State Convention in Columbus. The State Degree is the second Highest laurel an FFA member can earn ; the only higher honor is the America FFA Degree, qualifications to earn this Degree are: Have received a Chapter FFA Degree. Have been an active FFA member for at least two years at the time of receiving the State FFA Degree. Have completed at least 2 years (360 hours) of systematic school instruction in agricultural education at are above the ninth grade level, which includes an SAE. Have earned and productively invested at least $1,000, or have worked at least 300 hour outside of schedule class time through an SAE. Have demonstrated leadership ability by performing 10 parliamentary law procedures, giving a six-minute speech on a topic relating to agriculture or FFA, and serving as an FFA officer, committee chairperson, or committee member. Have a satisfactory academic record, certified by the agriculture teacher and the school principle or superintendent. Have participated in at least five different FFA activities above the chapter level. Have completed at least 25 hour of community service in a minimum of two different activities. Unlike the bronze Greenhand degree or the silver Chapter degree which are worn on the jacket be low the members name, the gold State Degree is worn on a chain suspended from the jacket. Hillary and James are the first members from Riverside since 2010 to receive their State Degrees. Congratulations! By: James Walters

7 Issue / L e a d e r s h i p C o n f e r e n c e On January 21st, James Walters, Ashley Todd, Ryan Downing, Shannon Evans, Justin Weeks, Dana Bell and Abby Smith hopped in the van and headed to 212/360 in Columbus Ohio. We all Enjoyed our time there as we met many State Officers such as Shelby Faulkner, Devon Alexander, Morgan Wade, Sierra Jepsen and many more. A couple of National Officers attended as well. At 212/360, we learned how to show leadership to others and how to accept ourselves for who we are. We enjoyed the dance, meeting all new people, playing pool and enjoying one another's company. We all bonded and It brought the members of our chapter closer together as we learned more about one another. The conference was divided up as 212 consisted of freshman and sophomores, while 360 consisted of juniors and seniors. We learned different things in both of them and had a blast as we danced to all the music. It was definitely a weekend a majority of the members who attended will never forget. As we all arrived home it was nice to be back, but kind of depressing that we had to leave. We all definitely encourage others to attend next year. By: Justin Weeks
