1 Special points of interest: Work group updates page 1 Strategic Map Progress page 5 CAH Map page 7 Vol.5, Issue 1 January G R E A T L A K E S R E G I O N A L S T R O K E N E T W O R K The Wave Quality of Care Workgroup The next quality of care teleconference will be housed on April 8, The topic is Fresh Approaches to Patient Education. A panel will be presenting about their successful approaches to improving compliance with the patient education measure. Presenters include: Susan Savastuk, MEd, BSN,RN,CDE,CRRN from Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, IN; Andrea Korsnack, BS, AD, RN, CNRN, CCRC from University of Toledo in Toledo, OH; Elaine Siwiec, BSN from Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey, MI, and Kari Bottemiller, RN, CNS Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Registration for the call will open in mid to late February. During this call, the new Patient Education toolkit will be released. Developed by the GLRSN Quality of Care work group, the toolkit contains patient education discharge instructions for stroke before and after health literacy guidelines, a day to day teaching plan for stroke patients, a how to guide on the SMOG readability scale in order to assist you in evaluating the reading level of your patient education tools, information on how to access patient education fact sheets from the GWTG Stroke patient management tool and much, much more. The Quality of Care work group quarterly conference call will be held in Feb The Discharge Planner online evaluation is completed in Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio. Results will be reviewed on the February call. State Advisory Board The State Advisory Board met in Chicago from January 21 22, 2010 to discuss CDC s optional grant application. Due to guidance provided by the CDC and discussions held with colleagues, it was determined that the best course of action was to develop an application that is for a region wide high blood pressure initiative while pursuing other funding options such as pharmaceutical companies and foundations. Various members of the GLRSN state advisory board have contacts and will be following up with them. Dysphagia Workgroup The article writing arm of the dysphagia work group submitted an abstract to the Journal of Stroke. A swallow screen checklist is in process. It has been reviewed by work group members, feedback provided and revisions are currently underway. We hope to be able to release this tool to hospitals in the Spring in order to assist hospitals evaluate their swallow screen tools, process, and education. We will continue to provide updates in the Wave. 1

2 VOL.5, ISSUE 1 Page 2 DYSPHAGIA, continued The workgroup is conducting a follow up evaluation on hospitals that participated in the GLRSN dyspagia work group to ascertain if any changes were made in hospitals swallow screen tools, processes, or education. If you have not yet completed this online evaluation, but did participate in the work group, please complete it at: An abstract is also being submitted to the AHA Outcomes conference. Through a collaboration with the National Stroke Association, the work group will be hosting a conference call on April 15, 2010 at Noon Central/1PM Eastern. 3 Illinois The next Illinois Stroke Task Force meeting will be held on March 12, 2010 via conference call 10:00-11:30a.m. Followed by June 11, 2010 in-person & via conference call 11-2:30p.m Indiana The next Indiana Stroke Prevention Task Force meeting will be held on February 17, They are planning a stroke conference in June and plan a strategic planning session for March. Michigan Please save the date for an upcoming stroke conference in Michigan: Friday September 10, 2010 at the Vista Tech Center at Schoolcraft College on Haggerty Road in Livonia. On 9/09/2010, there will be an all day (8 hour) pre-conference workshop for EMS providers: The Advanced Stroke Life Support program developed by the University of Miami, designed for EMS providers. It addresses the pre-hospital and general management of acute stroke. The content includes recognition of the 5 main stroke symptoms, t-pa considerations and contraindications, neurologic assessment and management of the stroke patient. This workshop has been conducted three times throughout the state to wait-listed crowds. Evaluations of the workshop have been consistently good. Minnesota The Minnesota Stroke Partnership met January 19. Please save the date for an upcoming Minnesota Stroke Conference on May 11, 2010, in St. Cloud. Ohio The Ohio Stroke Conference will be held in May, Wisconsin The Wisconsin Stroke Committee will be meeting in May. Resources AHA Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update 2010 The new AHA statistics were released December 17, compiled by both CDC and AHA staff, and members of AHA Statistical committees. Heart disease is estimated to cost $503.2 billion in 2010, an increase of 6%, with CVD mortality accounting for 34.3% of deaths in % of treated hypertensives have their hypertension under control. Increasing Kids Awareness of Stroke Beneficial to Parents An article published in Health Promotion Practice, titled Kids Identify and Defeating Stroke (KIDS): Development and Implementation of a Multiethnic Health Education Intervention to Increase Stroke Awareness among Middle School Students and their Parents, showed that stroke awareness knowledge improved.
