Finally, please comment on the feasibility of the project, and describe any steps you have taken to determine this. [max 300 words total + additional documentation] AHS in partnership with VESHI, a local NGO has successfully implemented the demonstration project. The 2.8kW solar power system installed is running at present. Performance of the system is monitored online and is attached here. AHS is in touch with previous supplier and is aware of other suppliers in Maldives. Suppliers duration of shipping, installation and commissioning are known. In the demonstration project, equipment was supplied within timeframe. AHS project is familiar to government authorities and utility company. AHS is familiar with government procedures for approvals and registration. Moreover, AHS has effectively established relationship with key experts related to energy, climate change and sustainable development for future awareness sessions. Two groups of students were engaged in the project during implementation. While the first group of students has graduated, the second group of students is currently studying and will be available to work with the project.
AHS and VESHI have been in discussion with national utility company to sign Power Purchasing Agreement and the utility company has confirmed the agreement. Therefore, net metering is expected to begin in the school in the near future. By the time of this project, the PPA will be signed and hence, additional kw to the schools solar power system can be easily incorporated to PPA. AHS is aware of costs involved, difficulties that may arise and how challenged may be address based on the demonstration project. In addition, VESHI is committed to work with AHS to ensure success of this project. Innovation - 20% 6. What problem does your project solve? What research have you done into alternative solutions (for example others in your country or area), and how did you decide on this one? [max 300 words] Maldives is dependent on imported fossil fuel for electricity. The 2013 fuel bill of Maldives was over USD480 million, representing 21% of GDP. In 2009, GHG emission of Maldives was 1.3 million tco2eq. In the business as usual scenario, emission could double and per capita emissions will reach 4.0tCO2eq, similar to China, more than India and half of per capital emissions of France. In 2013 AHS consumed 97,584kWh of electricity. With conversion to 100% solar power, AHS is likely to save 59,000 tco2eq emissions. More importantly, AHS will set an example for other schools to follow through in converting to solar power for electricity. Schools are often one of the major consumers of electricity. With the trend to install air conditioning in classrooms, electricity demand for schools is increasing. Therefore shifting to solar power or other renewable energy now is critical for sustainable development at community level as well as national level. Viable alternatives to solar PV are wind and waste-to-energy (WTE) according to the (SREP).Assessments related to SREP show wind is feasible only for the northern atolls of Maldives.AHS is located in Addu City which is the southernmost atoll of Maldives. White WTE is viable, adequate amount of the required type of waste is not generated in the school to opt for WTE. On the other hand, in addition to Maldives receiving an abundance of sunshine year round, there is little spatial variation of sunshine received throughout the island.therefore, solar is feasible for Addu City as well as any other atoll that may be chosen for project replication Furthermore, there are already successful installations of solar PV across Maldives and the demonstration project show that solar power is successful in AHS. With this project AHS will be the first school in Maldives to use 100% solar power for electricity.
7. What are the particular attributes and strengths of your school, its location and the region, that will be used to make the project work effectively? How will the project use local resources costeffectively and creatively? In addition to technical or geographical factors, feel free to describe any innovative external collaborations or partnerships you have that will be important in developing the project. [max 400 words] Addu High School is located in the second city of Maldives, Addu. Addu City has a population of over people. The school has over 300 students in enrollment with 45 teachers. Hence AHS has the human capital need to sustain the results of the project. The school premises is on the largest in terms of land area thus securing the space required for installation of the solar energy related infrastructure. Moreover students of this school are with high intellectual capacity to initiate this kind of projects on their own after the completion of studies provided with exposure and training. Leadership - 20% 8. In what ways will students be engaged with the project? What will be the roles of staff and students in collaborating to run the project in particular, how will staff provide support? [max 300 words] The lessons learned from the pilot project has built the capacity of the school management in facilitating meaningful opportunities to engage students and staff at all stages of the project. Reflecting from the experience and lesson learned from the previous project a Project Management Unit (PMU) will be selected for the Zayed Future Energy Project. The PMU will comprise of a Leading teacher in charge of School Environmental club, leading teacher of School Natures club, leading teacher of Schools Business Club, Student President of Environmental Club, Student President Nature Club, Student President of Business Club, a focal point from VESHI and a focal point from SWIMSOL Company and a focal point from Parents Teachers Association. The PMU will be responsible for the strategic planning and execution of the project in the given time frame with the contribution above-mentioned entities. All interested students and staff of the school will be given the opportunity to practically take part in the project. An orientation workshop will be held for students to familiarize them with the project and identify and match their areas of interest with the different stage of the project. Based on the outcome of the workshop the students and staff will be allocated to different tasks of the project. Since it would be a learning experience the PMU will utilize a flexible approach in dealing with students. They can change their areas of contribution based on their newly discovered interests as the project progress. From our experience we believe this approach will prepare the students for future education and careers renewable energy, environmental sustainability and carbon neutrality. Masa Ali, one of the student who took part in the pilot project is now pursuing an opportunity for higher studies in Renewable Energy in Australia.
9. What was the process you used to develop the project plan, and how were students involved in this process? How much of the final plan is the result of staff versus student input? [max 250 words] As part of the demonstration project, a group of students were chosen for education and awareness and to promote the 100% solar power goal within the school and the community. The students aspire to make AHS the first carbon neutral school and the first 100% solar powered school of Maldives, as revealed during awareness sessions with students. During awareness sessions, students were educated on the vulnerability of Maldives to climate change, responsibility of the nation to set example to mitigate GHG emissions, the extreme oil vulnerability of Maldives economy to global fuel prices and feasibility of solar PV for Maldives. The students were made well aware of the need to choose solar power for their school. The project plan is based on the aspirations of the students to make AHS 100% solar. In addition, education and awareness are included to engage existing group of students as well new students every year. Lessons sharing with a school in another atoll are included to provide opportunity for the AHS students to share their experience with a new school as well as widen the impact of the project to other atolls of Maldives. The staff has been involved in preparation of the proposal. Long-Term Vision 30% 10. What is the school s long-term sustainability goal? In addition to the project mentioned, how are you working towards this, and what past achievements have you made? [max 250 words] The long-term sustainability goal of AHS is to be the champion of green schools in Maldives. The school aims to provide students the opportunity to explore and experience solutions for most pressing challenges for the sustainable development of Maldives. Green school encompasses clean energy, zero waste to landfill and healthy environment for students to learn and grow. Between 2012 and 2014, AHS implemented the Education for Low Emission Climate Resilient Development project. The success of the project has kick-started the 100% solar power target. In 2012, students of AHS raised funds through the Maldives Youth Climate Network (MYCN) for the Lets LEDify project. A total of 160 lights was procured and installed converting the lighting in the office block to LED lights. Energy audits before and after the project showed that an estimated 730 kwh can be saved in a month. AHS is to continue efforts to convert whole school to LED lights. AHS introduced iclass in 2012 in partnership with Develop Addu (NGO). The aim of the project was revolutionize learning by providing students with ipads and access to more resources through
applications such as ibooks. T establish the first iclass, 30 ipads, one Macbook Pro, projector and other equipment were procured. Training sessions were conducted for students, teachers and staff on how to use the ipads for teaching and learning. iclass is designed to make teaching and learning paperless. AHS is to continue efforts to convert all classroom to iclass concept. 11. In what way is the project expected to encourage responsible global citizenship and sustainability among students, staff, parents and the wider community? What steps will be taken to ensure this? [max 300 words] Maldives is the world s lowest lying nation. On average our islands are 1.3 meters above sea level. This project is designed on the fundamental understanding that low-lying countries like Maldives are most vulnerable to green house gas related global warming. At every stage of the project the students would be encouraged to recognize that renewable energy is the 21st centuries means to energy security, environmental sustainability and economic and social efficiency. The students would be encouraged to understand that in making their professional and personal choices that they have a responsibility to operate with energy efficiency, curbing and cutting greenhouse gas emissions. The students will be taught carry out energy audits. They would be competent measure monitor and reduce energy consumption in their homes and become environmental stewards. This would trickle down the lessons learned from this project as positive results that would have a huge positive impact on environment and sustainability. Practically engaging the students in all aspects of the project from designing, procurement, installation, maintenance and future expansion of the project will expose the students to the international trades, the actuals costs of equipment and operation. It will also the give the students the build network and collaborate with SWIMSOL renewable energy engineers from Austria. Furthermore through the awareness workshops of the project the students would be made aware of how their actions, attitude and values affect the global environment and the virtues of global citizens needs to have to enable sustainable development. They would taught of the definition of sustainable development and the role of renewable energy and carbon neutrality in achieving sustainable development. 12. Project continuity and management: a. How will you ensure the long-term continuity of the project, not just in terms of maintenance but in the engagement and commitment of student groups and the broader community? For example, has a permanent student committee been created to focus on sustainability initiatives? If so, what are its duties, and what has it done already? [max 250 words] One of the key outcomes of the solar energy pilot project is the idea put forwarded by the students to create permanent student body focusing on solar energy, carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability. The student body was named by the members as Dhoadhi Rays of Hope for a Sustainable Planet. Currently the school is working on administrative works in registering the student body. When registered the Dhoadhi will be the pioneering student organization that will
work on making AHS the first carbon neutral school of Maldives. While further expansion of AHS Renewable Energy Project through continuous exploration and adopting of latest innovation in the field and will remain the high priority are of work, communicating the success story AHS with the community and other schools of Maldives and inspiring them to pursue renewable energy and carbon neutrality will be a primary objective of the Dhoadhi. b.
