1 Embedding equality and diversity in the curriculum
2 Aim of the Session To focus on how Havering College successfully embedded equality & diversity (E&D) across our induction programme, review and support (tutorial) sessions and vocational courses.
3 Objectives: To share good practice re embedding E&D into schemes of work and lesson plans To share good practice on embedding E&D into subject areas where embedding this topic does not necessarily have a natural fit. Anything else?
4 The Key To Success? Creating an environment where E&D permeates every college activity the learner comes into contact with. A common strand through our induction, tutorial/support and vocational programmes.
5 Induction
6 A cross college induction programme designed to promote awareness of E&D and encourage respect. Learners are actively encouraged to share their different views and identify their differences and similarities as part of the icebreaker exercises. Stereotypical / prejudicial views of men & women are challenged through a gender quiz.
7 Highlights Student Services events that promote E&D. Learners are made aware of some of the cultural differences that mean we can unwittingly cause offence. SkillsBuilder diagnostic testing is used to identify any support needs re literacy and numeracy. Learners are made aware of the available Learning Support Services to ensure equality of opportunity.
8 Review and Support Sessions (Tutorials)
9 All full time FE tutor groups work through a series of 3 compulsory tutorials (called My College, My Safety and My Future)covering: Equality & Diversity Respect Safeguarding Careers E-safety Promoting E&D is an integral part of these tutorials. Resources can be adapted for other groups of learners.
10 Learning Support Team provide tutorials on disability awareness. Student Services provide a range of tutorials and workshops designed to promote E&D including LGBT Awareness, Mental Health Awareness, Faith Workshops.
11 E&D On The Scheme Of Work
12 Each vocational SOW should have an overarching view of what lecturers will do to highlight E&D throughout the academic year Equality and Diversity: Learners are made aware of the College policy on E & D. Lecturers will actively promote a harmonious and inclusive environment and will challenge inappropriate behaviour (whether by learners or staff). Support will be provided to those learners with individual support needs to enable them to access the course fully.
13 Where lecturers already know what they are going to do in particular weeks then that is identified in the top E&D section to give a more detailed description of their intentions. Equality and Diversity: Learners will explore Equality & Diversity Issues that will affect their role as a legal secretary including: the difficulties that can occur when certain sections of the workforce feel excluded from management the need to select appropriate methods of communication to meet the needs of individuals Exploration of the barriers that prevent communication i.e. cultural differences, disabilities, language barriers and how these can be broken down The concept of Fair Trade when choosing suppliers The extended customer care requirements of certain members of our community / equality of opportunity re access to building, services and resources and how to recognise hidden disabilities.
14 For each weekly entry of the SOW lecturers are encouraged to highlight opportunities where E&D can be highlighted in lessons. 1. To enable learners to gain an understanding of legal personnel within a law firm 13/9 and their roles. The Working Environment Equality and Diversity: Emphasise the alternative routes to qualify as a solicitor open to those unable to attend university due to socioeconomic backgrounds.
15 E&D In Lesson Plans
16 Lecturers are required to embed E&D into lessons wherever possible. Using a wide variety of multi cultural names and scenarios in tasks is considered standard practice. Lecturers are encouraged to actively embed E&D into lessons to recognise an awareness week i.e. Black History Month Celebration of Cultures & Faiths Awareness Week Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual & Transgender History/ Awareness
17 Harnessing natural opportunities Sometimes, the session allows for E&D to be embedded naturally as it directly links to the subject content being delivered
18 Client Care Identify the requirements our customers have? In small groups list the requirements on flip chart paper. E&D Promote discussion of the extended customer care requirements of certain members of our community. Feed back to the class. Discuss the Legal Duties Placed On Organisations In Relation To Equality of Access To Services Emphasise equality of opportunity re access to building, services and resources. Emphasise that not all disabilities are visible. Disability Rights Commission Talk Video clip to illustrate how disabled people are discriminated against.

22 LGBT Awareness Week Touch typing Topical text used in exercises Functional Skills English Spelling tests based on the LGBT awareness posters around the college followed by discussion on what the words mean OCR Business Admin Teamwork module Discussion on What effect might there be on your team if someone revealed they were gay or transgender?
23 HTML Web Design Continuation from the previous exercise, learners will learn to insert images into a table. Remind learners of the width and height attributes of the <img> tag. Before exercise show learners how to search for images using advanced search techniques. Learners to use the Internet to search for and download two to four images of people they most admire to celebrate Black History month. Learners to attempt to use advance searching techniques when using search engines. To celebrate black History month learners to save 2/ 4 pictures to use within their table E&D encourage discussion on examples shown on Smartboard.
24 Mathematics Units of Measurement Demonstrate the difference between imperial and metric units Experiment with measuring using imperial units such as inch and foot, and metric measurements such as metre, cm, mm, kg and g E&D - Encourage discussion on different examples and how different cultures / generations use different measurements
25 Managing Your Money Ethical Investing Define what ethical means? E&D / Citizenship - Learners will explore how different people s beliefs and values influence their use of banking services. This lessons will look at the concept of ethical banking How Can An Individuals personal beliefs affect their banking needs? Introduction to Islamic banking & Sharia law Reflect upon what we look at in the last lesson to try and answer this question. Listen & complete gap fill handout E&D - Learners will explore how different people s beliefs and values influence their use of banking services. This lesson will look at Sharia Law in relation to finance and banking Islamic finance gap fill handout Extension Activity Learners to decide which of the investments described are ethical. 26 Is It Effective? Lesson plans are audited by Quality & Standards and Line Managers to establish the extent to which E&D is being embedded. Training sessions are made available to any lecturers who need support with embedding E&D in vocational lessons. OFSTED graded us Good for E&D
