What it means for registrants, patients and employers. Helen Whyley, Nursing Officer Welsh Government

Aim of the Information Session Provide an overview of the revised NMC Code and proposed Revalidation model Increase awareness of the requirements for Revalidation Identify how Registrants might begin to prepare for Revalidation Share learning from the local Revalidation pilot project Provide information regarding further support. 2

The Code and Revalidation For everyone s protection 3

What is the Code? The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has updated its Code of professional standards. It sets out the revised universal standards expected of nurses and midwives, which they must uphold every day in order to be registered to practise in the UK. The revised Code became effective on 31 March

Four themes brought together in one Code Together they signify good nursing and midwifery practice. 5

Revalidation process 6

Practice hours Confirmation from a third party Continuing professional development Professional indemnity arrangement Practice related feedback Health and character Reflection and discussion 7

Practice hours Registrants must practise a minimum number of hours over the three years preceding the date of their application for renewal of their registration. 450 Minimum HOURS total practice hours required **Those with dual registration must undertake 900 hours 8

Continuing professional development Registrants must undertake continuing professional development (CPD), relevant to their scope of practice as a nurse or midwife, over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. 40 Of HOURS these 40 hours of CPD, 20 must include participatory learning 9

Practice-related feedback Registrants must obtain practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. 5 PIECES 10

Reflection and discussion Registrants must record written reflections on the Code, their CPD and practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. They must discuss these reflections with another NMC-registered nurse or midwife. 5 REFLECTIONS 11

Reflection and discussion What was the nature of the CPD activity/ practice-related feedback? What did Registrant learn from the CPD activity and/or feedback? How did Registrant change or improve their work as a result? How is this relevant to the Code? 5 REFLECTIONS 12

Health and character Registrants must provide a health and character declaration, including if they have received any cautions or convictions. HEALTH AND CHARACTER 13

Professional indemnity arrangement Registrants must declare that they have, or will have when practicing, appropriate cover under an indemnity arrangement. INDEMNITY 14

Confirmation from a third party Registrants will need to demonstrate to a third party that they have met the revalidation requirements. NB: A confirmer is being asked to judge whether registrants have demonstrated that they have met the requirements for revalidation, not whether they are fit to practice. CONFIRMATION 15

Revalidation Proposed Requirements (currently being piloted) Practice hours Registrants must practise a minimum of 450 hours (900 hours for those with dual registration) over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. Continuing professional development Registrants must undertake 40 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to their scope of practice as a nurse or midwife, over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. Of these hours, 20 must be through participatory learning. Practice-related feedback Registrants must obtain at least 5 pieces of practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. Reflection and discussion Registrants must record a minimum of 5 written reflections on the Code, their CPD and practice-related feedback over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. Registrants must discuss these reflections with another NMC registered nurse or midwife. Health and character Registrants must provide a health and character declaration. They must declare if they have been convicted of any criminal offence or issued with a formal caution over the three years prior to the renewal of their registration. Professional indemnity arrangement Confirmation from a third party Registrants must declare that they have, or will have when practicing, appropriate cover under an indemnity arrangement. Registrants will need to demonstrate to a third party that they have met the revalidation requirements. Keeping a portfolio We strongly recommend that registrants keep evidence that they have met these requirements in a portfolio (this is, however, optional). 16

How does this work in practice? When the confirmer is a registered nurse or midwife: The reflective discussion and confirmation discussion can happen with the same person It is recommended that this process happens at one meeting, for example, at an annual appraisal. When the confirmer is not a registered nurse or midwife: The reflective discussion with another NMC-registered nurse or midwife must happen first The confirmation discussion will need to happen after all other requirements are met. 17

Understanding the big picture 18

When will revalidation start? In October 2015 the NMC Council is expected to give the go ahead to launch revalidation. From this point, registrants will need to familiarize themselves with the revalidation requirements and start to develop their portfolio. It has been proposed that the first nurses and midwives to revalidate will be those with a renewal date in April This will give everyone time to prepare and familiarize themselves with the requirements. 19

Revalidation pilots Pilots are currently running in 19 organisations across the four countries of the UK. They will be completed by the end of May Pilot organisations have been selected to cover a variety of settings and employment circumstances for nurses and midwives. Nurses and midwives taking part will be using the provisional revalidation guidance to compile a portfolio of evidence that meets the requirements. Learning from the pilots will be used to refine the revalidation model before finalised guidance is published in autumn 2015.

What should Registrants do now? 1 Register at NMC online, where they can also find out their renewal date 2 Read the new Code and practise according to its principals 3 Ensure Registrants are up-to-date on revalidation developments and tools by checking regularly on our website 21
