[L to R] Angie Pierre (Brooklyn College), Magdalena Schwarz (NYU), Halsie Donaldson (Georgetown), Caitlin Nilles (Georgetown), Ruthie Pierre (MIT), Michael Jordan (University of Toledo), Hannah Brown (Georgetown), Sandra Landau (Yale), Vickie Louissant (Hofstra University), Jordan Wiebe (Oklahoma University), Yushabel lebrun (Brooklyn College), Stephanie Schreiber (Lafayette College) Haiti International Clinical Apprenticeship Program The goal of this program is to provide every participant with an introduction to the practice of medicine in a developing country and to give them the tools to think critically about finding sustainable solutions to the underlying issues faced by a healthcare system with limited resources. Students will get a basic overview of the Haitian medical system as it is carried out at the country's busiest hospitals. Observers can expect to work at medical centers that receive and treat some of the nation's needy. This program will allow important relationships to develop between program participants and people who are integral in providing healthcare in an underdeveloped country.
[L to R] Marlissa Collier (California State University), Jamayca Williams (Wellesley College), Janelle Legros (Florida State University) Why Haiti? Deficient sanitation systems, poor nutrition, and inadequate health services have pushed Haiti to the bottom of the World Bank s rankings of health indicators. In terms of health care spending, Haiti ranks last in the western hemisphere. Economic instability has limited any growth in this area. Per capita, Haiti spends about $83 USD annually on health care. There are 25 physicians and 11 nurses per 100,000 population. Only one-fourth of births are attended by a skilled health professional. Most rural areas have no access to health care, making residents susceptible to otherwise treatable diseases. In 2003, for example, the WHO confirmed an outbreak of typhoid fever in Haiti that, because of a lack of access to doctors and safe water, led to dozens of deaths.

Participants will be Observing: Vaccinations - Pap Smears Anti-parasitic Screenings and Treatments Blood and Urine Testing Labor and Delivery Duty (supervised) Emergency Room Duty Observing Basic Pediatric Ear/Eye/Nose/Throat Exam Surgeries, including C-Sections
[L to R] Edwine Baptiste (St. John s University), Michelle Summerall (College of the Holy Cross) How Involved Will We Be? The following factors should help you determine your level of participation: 1. The patient must agree to have you participate in their care. 2. Your field clinic supervisor can help you evaluate your capabilities. 3. The policies of the hospital must be followed. 4. You can evaluate your own capabilities based on previous experience & training. 5. You may choose not to participate in any aspect of patient care. Students can and should be a vital part of the provision of health services for the millions who do without but remember: this experience is not about you. It is about serving the underserved, while respecting their rights!
Where Will We Work? OFATMA Hospital OFATMA provides free health care to civil servants and entities controlled by the State (Communes, Banks, etc). They also provide subsidized health care to employers, workers, day laborers of the agricultural, industrial and commercial companies and, in general, any worker manual or intellectual who lends, with the help of a remuneration, its services with an employer in virtue of a tacit work contract. Lastly, OFATMA provides subsidized health care to professors and supervisors of private schools and universities.
[L to R] Edwine Baptiste (St John s University), Paige Tannhauser (NYU), Sofia Boilini (Georgetown) Where Else Will We Work? L Hôpital de la Communauté Haïtienne Haitian Community Hospital is managed by the Haitian Health and Education Foundation (FHASE), a non-government and non-profit foundation created in Through its public health programs, outpatient clinics, and 75-bed inpatient hospital, HCH has provided quality care to upwards of 80,000 people annually. It is committed to and accessible to the most disadvantaged sections of the area. Given its geographic position and services, Haitian Community Hospital aims to serve a population of 250,000 people, mainly from the communes of Pétion-ville (283,052 inhabitants) and Delmas (679,650 inhabitants).
Will We Be Safe? Our security detail is photographed above. All of our Program Participants will also be registered with the American Embassy. Coordinators will also have a direct contact with a Consulate from the American Embassy 24 hours a day in case of an emergency. Our itineraries will be personally submitted to the nearest United Nation Security office. The UN is essentially responsible for the peace keeping efforts in Haiti. In the unlikely event of a medical emergency, our program participant/s will be taken to MEDISHARE, which is an American Hospital established in Haiti after the Earthquake. It is currently being operated by American Doctors and Nurses from the University of Miami Hospital. They are equipped to support all major medical emergencies and some surgeries.
