Unit Number Unit Name Person Responsible 1515 Computer Science (CIS) Doss Buckelew : 1 Operational To have students graduate with not only a degree, but also with professional certifications in various topics in Computer Science. The faculty have been advised by outside sources, including the Advisory Council, that certifications can help students become more marketable when applying for employment. 6 1.The instructors will modify existing courses to prepare students to pass certification exams. Specifically, CIS 196B (Excel) and CIS 196C (Access) will have content tailored for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications included. Additionally, if possible, the MOS certification will be given to the students as part of the course. The first such modified courses would be offered starting in Fall of 215. Number of certifications earned by students before leaving Southern Union. The course syllabi for CIS 196B (Excel) and CIS 196C (Access) were examined to determine whether or not their current content, with slight modifications, would be suitable for training students for their respective Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications. Through assessing the possibility of modifying current courses taught, CIS 196B (Excel) and CIS 196C (Access), in order to offer certifications, the conclusion was reached that CIS 196B (Excel) could and would be so modified beginning in the Fall 215 semester. 1/5
Beginning Fall semester, 215, CIS 196B (Excel) will be taught with instruction tailored to help students pass the Microsoft Office Specialist exam for Microsoft Excel. Additionally, the MOS exam will be given to the students as part of the course. : 2 Student Learning All students enrolled in Computer Science will be able to demonstrate basic usage of Microsoft Access at 75% accuracy. During , students enrolled in Computer Science were able to demonstrate basic usage of Microsoft Access at 7% accuracy. A more thorough introductory lecture will be devised and delivered at the beginning of the Access unit in CIS 146. Lecture will include the use of certain instructional videos from Microsoft, found here: ca/article/training coursesfor Access 213 a4bd1ea d5f4 4c5 8b37 d254561f8bce. Also, handouts that address common pitfalls students encounter while working with Access have been developed and will be given to students at the start of the Access unit. will be measured by a written exam and a multiple choice exam. After reviewing the Microsoft Access Exams for students in CIS 146 for , the mean exam score was 67%. The outcome shows that the extra lecture time given to Microsoft Access did not help students achieve the desired goal. Further modifications to lecture and/or extra resources to give students will be identified. 2/5
A comparison of the and scores showed a 3% decrease in student understanding of Microsoft Access usage. : 3 Student Learning All students enrolled in Computer Science will be able to demonstrate the ability to calculate network number given an IP address and a subnet mask. At least 75% of students in Computer Science will be able to correctly calculate a network number from a given IP address and subnet mask. Currently, 6% of students can confidently make the required calculation per test scores. 1. The instructors will provide additional instructional time devoted to calculated network numbers and explaining the binary arithmetic behind those calculations. 2.Extra examples will be demonstrated by the instructor in class, and more problems regarding network number calculations will be introduced in the assignments in CIS 199 and CIS 246. The outcome will be measured using free response questions on an in class exam. Students mean score on exams regarding IP addresses and IP address calculations had a mean of 76% between students in CIS 199 and CIS 246. The stated outcome was achieved, so the extra time devoted to lecture and examples regarding IP addresses and IP address calculations will be continued in those courses. Students showed a 16% increase in being able to correctly calculate network 3/5
numbers given an IP address and subnet masks between and : 4 Student Learning All students enrolled in beginning computer science courses will be able to demonstrate mastery of concepts and terminology related to computer hardware at 75% accuracy. During , scores on the exams covering computer hardware came in at an average of 71%. Extra lecture time will be devoted to covering the material and more time for student questions will be allotted during those lectures. will be measured by results from multiple choice questions regarding computer hardware on in class exams and the Final Exam for CIS 13. Students in CIS 13 courses achieved an average of 8% on examinations regarding computer hardware terminology. The stated outcome was achieved, so the additional time devoted to computer hardware terminology will be continued in the future. A comparison of scores between and showed a 1% increase on exams regarding computer hardware terminology. Students in CIS 13 courses achieved an average of 89% on examinations regarding computer hardware terminology. 4/5
The stated outcome was achieved, so the additional time devoted to computer hardware terminology will be continued in the future. A comparison of scores between online CIS 13 students and showed a 5% increase on exams regarding computer hardware terminology. Save to PDF 5/5
