1 1 (5) Master s Programme in Fashion Studies, 1 st year Theory and Method I, 7,5 ECTS Fall term 2015 Course coordinator: Dr Paula von Wachenfeldt Course Guidelines Theory and Method I addresses different theoretical and methodological perspectives in fashion studies. The aim is to introduce the students to 1) the general foundations of research in fashion studies, and 2) the specificity of fashion as an interdisciplinary academic discipline. Fashion Studies is a young interdisciplinary field under development. It lacks both of theoretical and a methodological core compared to traditional disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The topic has grown out of different research traditions related to - but not limited to - sociology, semiotics, gender, dress history, textiles and clothing. LEARNING OBJECTIVES On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to: Formulate and present a research problem in fashion studies explore different theoretical and methodological approaches to fashion studies evaluate the choice of theories and methods used for your particular topic reflect on the different ethical aspects of the chosen method COURSE CONTENT The course will cover the following subjects: What the humanities and the social sciences are and how they evolved historically Theories and methods to apply in Fashion Studies Theories and methods when examining inventories Stockholms universitet Besöksadress: Telefon: Stockholm Borgvägen 1, Filmhuset E-post: klas@fashion.su.se
2 2 (5) Discourse analysis Representations and meaning The use of theories and methods in visual representations Ethnographic methods in Fashion Studies TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES The course consists of lectures and seminars that together provide an overview of the different theories and methods used in Fashion Studies as well as the guest lecturer s own research. Students are expected to attend at least 80 % of the total number of classes/lectures. All coursework will be conducted in English. ASSESSMENT The course is assessed through on oral presentation and a written take-home exam, graded on a criterion-referenced seven-grade scale. In order to obtain the final grade for the course a minimum grade of E as well as 80 % mandatory attendance are required. Final Exam The final exam, which is an individual take-home exam, will be distributed to you in due course of time. The deadline for submission is January 12 th 2016 at at the latest. Please hand in a printed copy in Paula s box outside her office. Grading The assessment is based on a criterion-referenced scale. A, B, C, D and E are approved grades, Fx and F are failed grades. In order to obtain final approval, the course requires a minimum grade of E for the oral presentation, the written take-home exam and that all course requirements are met. Students who have received a passing grade (A-E) are not allowed to retake the exam in order to receive a higher grade. Students who, for any reason, do not meet the deadline for the final exam cannot expect to receive any higher grade than a D.
