The Essential WAVA K-8 Scantron Performance Assessment Guide What is the Scantron test and why is my student taking the test? The Scantron Performance Assessment is a web-based computer-adaptive test that lets your teacher quickly pinpoint the proficiency level of your student. The computer will adapt the assessment based on your child s answers/ability. Am I allowed to help my child? No. This is not a high stakes testing situation. We want to know your child s true ability based on their effort and understanding of core concepts. What am I allowed to do? Encourage your child. Explain that the test adapts to their answers and that the questions will get harder until the test decides the child has demonstrated their highest level of ability. Encourage your child to guess or choose the best answer if they are unsure of a concept. Stop and start the test allowing for breaks as needed. Assist with logging in and troubleshooting the test. What should I not do? Remind the child of the time. Ask your child about the test. Help your child if problems are too difficult. Read any part of the reading passages to your child. Help your child narrow their choices. Hover over the child as they are assessing. Other important things to know about the test. There is no time limit. This test is not used to judge your effectiveness as a Learning Coach. Questions answered wrong by your child provide the teacher with information. It s okay for your child to give wrong answers if they are based on your child s true ability level.
Step 1: Find Your Student ID. You will need to find your child s Student ID to take the test. You will need this ID in the future, so write it down and keep it handy.

Step 2: Get Your Computer Ready to Take the Test. There are 4 actions you need to complete to get your computer ready to take the test. Please follow each of the following 4 steps: 1. Clear your browser cache and cookies.
2. Clear your Java cache.
3. Disable popup blockers. Firefox users: Go to the Content tab. Make sure box for pop-ups is not checked.

4. Check your browser for compatibility. Not all internet browsers are the same, and many websites are built to be accessed through specific browsers. Using an internet browser that s not compatible with a website can cause instability and incorrect scripts (or information) to appear. For this reason, here are the approved browsers for each website. Please be sure you are configured correctly prior to visiting these sites, depending on the browser you choose.
Remember: Do not use Google Chrome to take the Scantron test. Do not use IE 10 to take the Scantron test. Firefox is your best bet for this test.
Step 3 Prepare your student to take the test. Pick a time of day when your student does their best. Explain to your child that the test will adapt according to their answers, and some questions will be on material your student has not learned. Encourage your child to choose the best answer when they are unsure. Encourage your child to take their time. There is no time limit. They can pause the test and take breaks as needed. Step 4: Directions for taking the test. Make sure you have your Student ID ready! 1. Use Internet Explorer 8 or Mozilla Firefox as your web browser. (Safari is okay if you are using a Mac.) Do NOT use Google Chrome. 2. Go to 3. Choose Student Login. 4. Enter the Site ID (you must use the hyphens): and click Next. 5. Choose a subject area (only math and reading are required) and click Next. Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd grade students take Reading Foundations and Math 3 rd - 8 th grade student take Reading and Math 6. Enter your Student ID.
7. Read the directions. 8. Read each question, choose an answer and click Next. Please note: If you need to stop the assessment, click STOP. When you resume testing, the test will start where you left off. Please try to complete the test in one sitting. If you have technical issues, the test will stop. It should resume where you left off when you log in again. If the question contains a story, be sure to click as soon as you finish reading. The story stays on the screen so you can read it again when you answer questions about it. The test stops if you go too fast or click random answers quickly. If this happens, you will have to start over again. When you finish the questions, the test lets you know you are done. You will see a screen with a smiling boy or girl that says, You have completed your test. You are not done until you see this screen! Before taking a second test, clear your cookies and internet history again.
Help! I am still having trouble with the test. Did you follow the first 3 steps completely? Try a different browser. Firefox normally doesn t cause problems for taking the Scantron test. If a problem is occurring while using Firefox, it s usually because your QuickTime has not been updated. Click here to download latest upgrade: If another computer is available, try and see if you have the same problems or if you can get into the test. The student can take the test on any computer, since it s a web-based test. Won t let you log in. Clear java and browser cache. Symptoms and Solutions If you get to the login screen where you see your school name, click on the school name and it will take you to a main login page. Retype your school site number. Be sure you are using the correct school ID number. Don t copy and paste the number, as it sometimes adds a space to the end. Items missing from screen or things don t show up. Be sure you are using one of the browsers above. Always try both browsers (Firefox and Internet Explorer). Be sure you have the latest Adobe Flash. o Try another computer (the Assessment can be taken on any computer as it is web-based). Can t hear the audio test. Download latest version of QuickTime (see above). Click and nothing happens. Disable browser popup blockers. Remember that most third party toolbars (such as Google, Yahoo, etc.) have popup blockers. Disable them or turn off the toolbars. The only thing you should have checkmarked are Menu and Favorites bar. Everything else should be unchecked. After unchecking, restart your browser.
