1 1 Introduction This document describes the service for the GTS Virtual Hosting service. 2 Description of Performance Monitoring System The Performance Monitoring System is operated on a BaseN solution which is primarily intended for the sphere of the telco services performance management. The BaseN application collects data from Virtual Hosting equipment which are being monitored and assures a presentation of the collected data in real time trough On-line WEB based portal. The information provided by this service cannot serve as the basis for the calculation of credits for non-compliance with SLA due to the fact that all types of outages are recorded in the application. This includes, for instance, planned service outages, excluded events, outages caused by the customer, etc., which are not included in the total unavailability of the service. 2.1 Data collection The data is collected from the Virtual Hosting devices via VMWare API, which provides a simple, reliable and effective way of collecting a rich set of performance statistics Auto discovery procedure When new service is added to PMS, all Virtual Machines are configured automatically within the service with the usage of auto discovery functionality. The auto discovery script is running every 6 hours, which means that when new Virtual Machine is created in the Virtual Hosting Service, it will not show itself immediately in the PMS. The maximum time when the Virtual Machine statistics are visible in the PMS is 6 hours Samples collection The new data sample is collected every 5 minutes giving almost real-time data. 2.2 Configured reports The configured reports show the following: Average CPU usage [MHz and percentage] Memory Usage [MB and percentage] Network statistics for particular VM and whole environment Disks [Latency / Throughput] 2.3 Measured magnitudes Average CPU usage MHz - The CPU utilization. The maximum possible value here is the frequency of the processors times the number of cores. As an example, a VM using 4000 MHz on a system with four 2 GHz processors is using 50% of the CPU (4000 / (4 * 2000) = 0.5 Percentage - The CPU utilization. This value is reported with 100% representing all processor cores on the system. As an example, a 2-way VM using 50% of a four-core system is completely using two cores Memory Usage Megabytes - the amount of machine memory that is in use by the VM. While a VM may have been configured to use 4 GB of RAM, as an example, it might have only touched half of that. Of the 2 GB left, half of that might be saved from memory sharing. That would result in 1 GB of consumed memory. Percentage - the percentage of memory used as a percent of all available machine memory. Available for host and VM Network statistics Particular VM: o Average network throughput for received traffic. 1/5

2 o Average network throughput for transmitted traffic. o Network Packets Received o Network Packets Transmitted Whole environment: o Average network throughput for received traffic. o Average network throughput for transmitted traffic Disks Latency - Total read/write latency. The sum of the device and kernel read/write latencies. Throughput - average disk throughput due to read/write operations over the sample period. 3 Benefits for customer The customer gains the tool which can support the basic troubleshooting in case of identifying any issue with the performance of the service, where the part of the installation is the GTS Data Storage. It can help to confirm or exclude the Data Storage service as the source of the issue, cutting down dramatically the time needed for architecture researches. 4 Description of the customer interface The customer has access to the interface of the application Performance Monitoring System by means of an internet browser from the website For authorization and identification of a user a name and password are used which the customer receives when establishing the additional service. After entering the name and password the is displayed. 5 Control of the WEB interface and graphs creation 5.1 Left Pane The left pane shows all the monitored services configured for the customer. Clicking on the selected service results in displaying the details in the main window. 2/5

3 5.2 Main window Main window presents all the details related to particular Service, like: service ID, organization name, which service it is related to (vdc) and in which server group (vapp) particular VM resides. 5.3 Export of the measured values and graphs In the performance monitoring application it is possible to export any chart into Excel sheet (e.g. for further data processing) or into a PDF document. Simply you need to click on selection MORE and select EXPORT folder. 3/5

4 5.4 Display filter In order to filter the displayed data, click the selected data name in the table below the chart. 5.5 Zoom - in It is also possible to enlarge specific part of displayed graph to see more detailed parameters by using a mouse (keeping the left button of the mouse) and highlighting the specific area, than the graph is enlarged showing the selected area. Before e.g. need to focus on area from cca 03:00 to cca 05:00 o clock. After the graph is displaying the selected area with more details. 4/5

5 5.6 Change of display criteria Following criteria can be changed for chart display: A view of 1 day A view of 1 week A view of 1 month or even 1 year The chart can be expanded to several displayed periods using the selection + or -. Moving between the displayed periods can be done by using the buttons < a >. 5/5
