2 Introduction Learning is undergoing a revolution, fueled by an explosion of rich, video-based content that s now readily available to users. On top of that, business leaders realize the importance of being prepared, and are making sure that associates are trained and ready to do their jobs in the best way possible. As a result, people and business leaders are taking control of how they learn, which leads them to an increased focus on content. The enterprise learning market is reacting to these changes by making it easier to integrate content into learning management systems (LMS). The Aragon Research Globe for Enterprise Learning evaluates technology and service providers that allow an enterprise to manage and deliver all forms of learning. Video and mobile lead the pack in user demand, as does the need for easy access to a live class or a recorded one. The vendors with the best strategies understand this and have been doing makeovers of their offerings to support the social, mobile and video experience users want. Mobile is About Mobile First Nearly all learning providers offer mobile learning apps, but features and capabilities vary. One key thing we see in the mobile learning market is the desire to take courses offline. Leading learning providers support this important ability. One thing that also holds back the increased use of mobile learning is legacy content. Enterprises need to refresh old learning courses and get rid of Flashbased content that will not play on mobile devices. In 2014 more learning vendors offered quarterly updates on their mobile apps. Video Learning Is Here More than anything else, people who want to learn things fast want videos. Video learning is on the rise, and the ability to learn and collaborate on a video is the future. Vendors such as IBM and Peoplefluent are leading the charge with innovative video learning and video sharing capabilities. Integrating Content 2014 saw an explosion of third party content marketplaces, such as Coursera and Lynda.com. It was also the year that more leading providers made it easier than ever to integrate courses with the learning platform, eliminating the need for manual testing and integration. By 2016, Aragon is predicting that automatic content integration will become a must-have feature. Given the growth of content, interest in authoring tools and learning content management systems (LCMSs) will grow. Marketplaces Make Adding Apps Easier Major learning providers are adding application marketplaces to integrate third-party apps with their core learning platforms. Marketplaces let enterprises add extra features that are not in the core platform. Enterprise marketplaces will be the norm by 2016, and learning is no exception. Cornerstone OnDemand, IBM, Saba Software, and SAP all offer various flavors of a marketplace, both for apps and optionally for courseware Aragon Research Inc. and or its affiliates. 3 Social and Collaborative Learning Social learning is not going away, but we have seen mixed demand in part because many enterprises already have a social platform in place. The next phase of social learning blends formal and informal learning into a modern community-based experience. From a collaboration perspective, taking a virtual class is becoming common. Many providers today only integrate with a third party web conferencing service, making the reuse of recorded classes a challenge. Predictive Learning Is The Future While learning is still a manual and highly customized experience, the beginning of predictive learning, in which courses and content are recommended and delivered to students on demand, is quickly approaching. Today, few vendors offer predictive learning, but we expect many to add this set of features over the next eighteen months. Of the vendors in this report, only four currently offer predictive capabilities. Cloud is a Must-Have Option Enterprises are realizing that in many cases it is easier to run their major applications, like learning and talent, in the cloud. Almost all the providers in this report are cloud-enabled, and some provide public, private and hybrid cloud options. Given the current era of cyber warfare, enterprises should ask for and expect to get a regular dashboard on security. Learning versus the Talent Management Suite Talent management suites are becoming common, but learning is still the stickiest and most challenging application in a talent suite because learning is not just an application, it s an entire ecosystem. Many best-of-breed learning providers still offer more capabilities and advanced features than most full talent suites. Regardless of the provider, enterprises need to evaluate learning solutions on how well they do this, and realize that learning content is a big part of the overall equation Aragon Research Inc. and or its affiliates. 4 Aragon Research Globe Overview The Aragon Research Globe graphically represents our analysis of a specific market and its component vendors. We do a rigorous analysis of each vendor, using three dimensions that enable comparative evaluation of the participants in a given market. The Aragon Research Globe looks beyond size and market share, which often dominate this type of analysis, and instead uses those as comparative factors in evaluating providers productoriented capabilities. Positioning in the Aragon Research Globe will reflect how complete a provider s future strategy is, relative to their performance in fulfilling that strategy in the market. A further differentiating factor is the global market reach of each vendor. This allows all vendors with similar strategy and performance to be compared regardless of their size and market share. It will improve recognition of providers with a comprehensive strategy and strong performance but limited or targeted global penetration, which will be compared more directly to others with similar perspectives. Dimensions of Analysis The following parameters are tracked in this analysis: Strategy reflects the degree to which a vendor has the market understanding and strategic intent that are at the forefront of market direction. That includes providing the capabilities that customers want in the current offering and recognizing where the market is headed. The strategy evaluation includes: Learning Product Product strategy Market understanding and how well product roadmaps reflect that understanding Marketing Management team, including time in the job and understanding of the market Performance represents a vendor s effectiveness in executing its defined strategy. This includes selling and supporting the defined product offering or service. The performance evaluation includes: Awareness: Market awareness of the firm and its product. Customer experience: Feedback on the product, installs, upgrades and overall satisfaction. Viability: Financial viability of the provider as measured by financial statements. Pricing and Packaging: Is the offering priced and packaged competitively? Product: The mix of features tied to the frequency and quality of releases and updates. R&D: Investment in research and development as evidenced by overall architecture. Reach is a measure of the global capability that a vendor can deliver. Reach can have one of three values: national, international or global. Being able to offer products and services in one of the following three regions is the third dimension of the Globe analysis: 2015 Aragon Research Inc. and or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Page 4
5 Americas (North America and Latin America) EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) APAC (Asia Pacific: including but not limited to Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, Singapore, etc.) The market reach evaluation includes: Sales and support offices worldwide Time zone and location of support centers Support for languages References in respective hemispheres Data center locations The Four Sectors of the Globe The Aragon Research Globe is segmented into four sectors, representing high and low on both the strategy and performance dimensions. When the analysis is complete, each vendor will be in one of four groups: leaders, contenders, innovators or specialists. We define these as follows: Leaders have comprehensive strategies that align with industry direction and market demand, and effectively perform against those strategies. Contenders have strong performance, but more limited or less complete strategies. Their performance positions them well to challenge for leadership by expanding their strategic focus. Innovators have strong strategic understanding and objectives, but have yet to perform effectively across all elements of that strategy. Specialists fulfill their strategy well, but have a narrower or more targeted emphasis with regard to overall industry and user expectations. Specialists may excel in a certain market or vertical application. Inclusion Criteria The Aragon Research Globe for Enterprise Learning, 2015 will help clients differentiate the many vendors who offer tools to let enterprises manage and deliver all forms of learning. The inclusion criteria for this Aragon Research Globe are: A minimum of $ 4 million in primary revenue for learning products or services (LMS, LCMS, classroom, authoring) or a minimum of $15 million in revenue in a related market (talent management, collaboration or learning content courseware). Shipping product: must be announced and available. Customer references: Vendor must provide customer references in each region where the vendor does business. Exclusions The following vendors were excluded from this Aragon Research Globe: 2015 Aragon Research Inc. and or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Page 5

8 Leaders Cornerstone OnDemand Cornerstone OnDemand (CSOD) has been one of the fastest-growing talent management providers in the industry. It markets its cloud-based Talent Management Suite either individually or as bundled modules. CSOD has solidified its mobile capabilities as part of its overall learning cloud and recently enhanced its overall social and community features. One innovative move that Cornerstone made in 2014 was to launch its marketplace, which allows numerous third-party applications such as Cisco s WebEx to easily integrate with its platform. Cornerstone also purchased Evolv, a predictive services firm, and we expect it to integrate Evolv capabilities into its platform over time. Complete end-to-end Talent Suite Ease of doing business with CSOD Overall growth Marketplace Multiple Cloud Products IBM Smarter Workforce IBM Smarter Workforce has been enhancing its overall talent management with a particular focus on learning, learning content and video learning. In 2014, it launched its social learning offering, which is more about video learning and collaboration than anything else. Enterprises have used it in highly complex learning environments, such as surgery, to quickly train people on a global basis. IBM s flagship LCMS is used by many large enterprises due to its scalability, support for multiple content types, and multiple modes of content delivery, including mobile. IBM's LMS is a learner-centric application that integrates social networking, collaboration and knowledge sharing with traditional learning functions, such as interactive elements that let users rate learning content and share their experiences. IBM s advanced predictive analytics represent the future, in part because how easily humans can query and get answers from the system using simple English. IBM s social collaboration, which is integrated with its Smarter Workforce platform, offers strong informal learning features, as well as the ability to integrate third-party apps via their marketplace. It also launched a marketplace in 2014 that features prebuilt connectors to systems and services, including learning content, so they can be easily integrated to Saba Cloud. Vector Capital took Saba private on February 10, 2015, a move that effectively ended Saba s financial restatement issue. Meridian is one of the few vendors with the proven ability to support over 1 million users in a single implementation, but is still small enough to partner heavily with its clients to create solutions that meet their unique business needs. Meridian s core strength revolves around its focus on learning technology with flexible deployment options, including on-premises, single-tenant and multi-tenant SaaS. Meridian KS changed its management team in 2014, and in January 2015 it announced industry veteran Jeff Kristick as President. This should help its overall focus. 19 Aragon Advisory Enterprise learning planners should ensure that mobile-first apps and collaboration capabilities are high on the list versus just LMS features. The user experience of a learning solution is just as important as the back-end feature set. Keep this in mind when evaluating providers. Enterprises should look at vendors that make content integration simpler and faster. Bottom Line Enterprises are gaining a competitive advantage when their associates have the skills they need to do their job well. Enterprises planners responsible for learning should look at their current learning providers and ensure that they can meet current and future needs. Also, ensure that learning can be easy and fun for users by evaluating providers that can deliver on that value proposition Aragon Research Inc. and or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Page 19
