3 Aims and Objectives of the Master in Economics provides students with the qualifications needed to succeed in an increasingly international job market serves as excellent preparation for further graduate studies with the goal of writing a doctoral thesis provides students with a thorough understanding of the principles of economic theory and its applications in various fields acquaints students with the methodological framework underlying current research and enables them to apply their knowledge to a broad range of economic problems outstanding students have the option to move on to the Ph.D. program

4 Program Structure The Master program includes basic and advanced modules, and so-called project modules 1st semester: basic modules cover the basics of economics and methodology 2 nd and 3 rd semester: advanced modules involve a more indepth study of 2-4 study areas 3rd semester: advanced modules plus project module, a research seminar which focuses on designing research projects 4th fourth semester: writing the Master thesis.

5 Basic Modules Basic modules are offered in the Winter Semester only. Students need to take these modules in the first semester. The Course Mathematics for Economists is compulsory. Students need to choose at least 3 of the following modules: Microeconomics Macroeconomics Econometrics Finance

9 Advanced Modules can be taken by students who have successfully completed the corresponding basic module students can either focus on 2 study areas (narrow focus) or choose to select up to 4 study areas (broad focus). A study area is covered once students have taken at least one advanced module in it participation in project modules requires that students have passed the corresponding basic module plus an advanced module from the same study area

10 Advanced Modules: Economic Research Topics in Microeconomic Theory Topics in Macroeconomics and Public Economics Topics in Management and Applied Microeconomics Topics in Financial Economics Topics in Econometrics and Statistics designed to prepare students for a Ph.D. degree students who successfully complete these modules may apply to the Bonn Graduate School of Economics (BGSE) to transfer into the Ph.D. program Entry Requirements: Mathematics for Economists passed with 2,3 or better, corresponding basic module passed with 2,3 or better

11 Project Modules (Research Seminars) offered in all study areas except Economic Research focus is on research methods, students will improve their analytical skills, e.g. by replicating a paper, collecting and processing data, developing research questions and a research design, structuring a research paper serve as preparation for writing the Master thesis offered only in winter semesters, students take them in their third semester entry requirements: completed basic module (for registration) and advanced module (for participating) in the corresponding study area places are allocated through an online registration procedure, see

14 Master Thesis Upon successful completion of all required basic, advanced, and project modules, students are ready to start writing the Master thesis Requirements: one advanced module from the study area in which you want to write your thesis one project module from any study area students earn 30 credit points for successfully completing the thesis

16 Examinations (1) basic modules are offered only in the winter semester, advanced modules in a yearly cycle, project modules are offered in winter semesters only module examinations for the basic modules are written examinations only module examinations for the advanced modules are written or oral examinations module examinations for the project module are presentations and term papers

17 Examinations (2) There are two examination periods for written and oral exams. The first examination period begins shortly after the end of the semester in which the module was offered. The second period precedes the start of the following semester. For the exact dates, please check the page of the VWL Prüfungsamt (Economics Examination Office) Students may choose the examination period in which they want to take their exam. Students usually take four exams per semester.

19 Examinations (3) Students can take the exams for the basic and advanced module up to three times to pass them. In order to improve their grades, students can retake exams for those basic modules they have taken in the first exam period in the second exam period of the same semester. This is not possible for advanced modules. Students can take a project module exam twice in order to pass it Students can write the Master Thesis twice in order to pass it

20 Registration with the Prüfungsamt (Economic Exams Office) Registration for Master students will take place on Monday, December 09, 2:00 4:00 pm Wednesday, December 11, 12:00 2:00 pm at the VWL Prüfungsamt, Juridicum, Room Once you are registered with the Prüfungsamt, you can register for exams through the electronic schedule of classes (EVV - Basis) and print your transcripts through Basis (both in a German and an English version) If you fail to register, you will nto be able to aprticipate in the first exam period

21 Registration at the Economics Examination Office In order to be admitted, students need to present a complete CV with photo a certified copy of their Bachelor degree certificate a certified copy of their English language test the completed Application Form (filled in online) pruefungsamt/master-dates-and-deadlines/masterzulassung their student ID

22 There is no registration for classes. Registration for Exams (1) Students need to register for exams through the electronic schedule of classes (EVV) during the registration period for exams which is announced on the pages of the VWL Prüfungsamt under the heading Terminübersicht ( Meldung zu den Prüfungen ) basis.uni-bonn.de

24 You receive your login information for your university account with your student documentation. With your username and your initial password you can log on to the electronic class schedule.

26 Exam Registration (2) registration for exams can be cancelled online through Basis during the registration period students are required to check whether their registrations and cancellations have been registered correctly. Changes will not be possible after the registration/cancellation deadline To be able to prove that you have registered for an exam or withdrawn from an exam (should any problems occur), please print the pdf-file (or save it on your computer)

28 Withdrawing from an Examination because of Illness students who are unable to take an exam because they are ill, need to: (1) not appear for the exam (2) immediately submit a brief informal written request to cancel your registration specifying the examination(s) they want to withdraw from (3) submit a doctor s certificate including information about the kind, severity and duration of your illness

38 Financing your Studies: Students from EU countries: do not need a work permit need to pay taxes and social security contributions if they work for more than 19 hours per week or earn more than 400 Euros per month Students from non-eu countries usually the permission to work during semester breaks (120 days full time or 240 days part time) is marked in your passport.
