The graduate program s philosophy of putting theory to practice helped me further develop my pedagogy. I believe my success as an educator was due largely in part to the dual professional semester/student teaching program and to the dedicated faculty of Kutztown University.

4 I chose kutztown K Ate A uch enba c H Master of Education Choosing KU was one of the easiest choices I made for my future. The hometown environment and graduate course offerings were a smooth fit into my busy lifestyle, and the affordable tuition was a major advantage. The Secondary Education program is a haven for teachers wishing to further their education or for students looking to begin a new career endeavor.

5 seconda ry e duca t I on The Secondary Education program offers six specializations for secondary school teachers and persons in related positions. This program is designed to: Enhance scholarly growth and personal competency in one s specialized area increase awareness of current education practices Expand the knowledge and understanding of cur riculum development and the instructional process Augment professional awareness through research The specialization in Curriculum and instruction is designed for secondary school teachers in all academic disciplines and for other professionals concerned with the education of adolescents and/or adults. in addition to in-depth train ing in curriculum and instruction, this program offers graduate students the opportunity to pursue advanced study in a variety of academic disciplines. Graduate courses in this specialization may be selected from four major areas: Curriculum Educational Environment instruction Professionalism The areas within each specialization cover the following: Area i designed to investigate the criteria for decision-making and the structure and organization of curriculum holistically or in a specialized area. Area ii designed to explore the fundamentals underlying the education process and to relate them to current practice in schooling. Area iii designed to provide in-depth knowledge of instructional strategies and to enhance the effectiveness of instruction. Nine hours will be selected carefully, in con sul ta tion with the faculty advisor, to meet the graduate student s needs. These nine hours may be chosen from areas I-IV or, with the approval of the advisor, graduate courses from other disciplines. Teachers matter - it is truly an honor to work within a nationally accredited teacher education program with faculty who are outstanding in their field of study, students who are constantly challenged to think critically and act equitably, and staff who are knowledgeable and incredibly supportive. i cannot think of a better place to teach. patricia walsh coates, ph.d., associate professor

6 s upervisory c erti f I c A te: c urri culum A n d InstructI on The completion of a Supervisor of Curriculum and instruction Certificate K-12 is now a hiring requirement in many local school districts, specifically when a district seeks to add district coordinators, supervisors, and department heads to its staff. The Master of Education in Curriculum and instruction is the degree that most closely aligns with the courses needed for the supervisory certificate. By carefully selecting courses, graduate students can earn both the M.Ed. and the Supervisor of Curriculum and instruction Certificate simultaneously. By earning this additional advanced certification, you the student, will reflect the College of Education s Teacher as Lifelong Learner model. requi rem ents Teachers may complete coursework toward the supervisory certificate upon entering the graduate program, however they cannot complete the certificate until five years of successful teaching is documented within their area of certification. This requirement must be verified with a written notification on school letterhead by a chief school administrator. The teacher must hold a valid teaching certificate. Teachers must complete an approved program preparing the applicant for the broad area, district-wide K-12 supervisory functions specified by the endorsement of the certificate. The Pr AxiS Educational Leadership: Administration and Supervision (0410) examination must be taken and passed as part of the successful completion of this program. course of study I.
