About the Paulo Freire School The Paulo Freire Charter School is conveniently located across the street from Newark Broad Street Station, which provides a 15 minute direct line of service to New York Penn Station. The Paulo Freire Charter School (aka The Freire School) opened in September of 2012, and was chartered by the New Jersey State Department of Education to serve students in grades 9-12 within the city of Newark. At capacity, the Freire School will serve 320 students. Mission of the Paulo Freire Charter School The mission of the Paulo Freire Charter School (aka The Freire School) is to service those who strive to grow in knowledge, wisdom, and understanding for the betterment of our society. We seek to improve the quality of life by putting scholarship into practice for the purpose of addressing social inequities and injustices. Through a cyclical process of inquiry and social engagement, our scholars take key concepts and apply them to service learning projects that promote social justice and democracy. Our goal is to develop a self- actualized scholar, who possesses a knowledgeable and discerning mind, thrives in service to others, and is prepared for higher education.

2 Our teachers must firmly believe in the mission of the school, its goals, and its core value: as teachers one of our most important roles is to foster the active use of knowledge. The Freire School is committed to: 1. Placing a premium on inquiry based instruction and social engagement. 2. Maintaining a commitment to a cognitive apprenticeship methodology. 3. Hiring and retaining high- quality, mission aligned teachers. 4. Using a data- driven approach to plan and implement lessons. 5. Employing a variety of customized daily student supports. About the Position: The Resource Teacher Coordinator will provide quality services to special education student s grades 9-12, through a commitment to team participation in planning and implementation of student programs including special instruction, tutorial assistance, and consultation to general education staff. This position reports to the Executive Director of Academics and Director of Student Support Services. The Resource Teacher Coordinator will perform, but are not limited to, the following duties: 1. Assisting the school with the development and maintenance of its special education program by ensuring that the academic program is compliant and instructionally sound, in accordance with all directives, standards, procedures, policies, laws, rules, regulations, codes, and guidelines related to accommodating students with special needs. 2. Attending IEP meetings and preparing student individualized education plans in consultation with parents and IEP team members, as appropriate. 3. Acting as a case manager for students with special needs, which includes reviewing and revising IEPs, ensuring that special education files are compliant, and SIS database is up- to- date with accommodations, dates, and other needed information. 4. Providing direct services to special education students by designing and delivering instruction, both individual and small group, which parallels the general education curriculum, as needed. 5. Acting as the coordinator of IEP implementation with the general education staff by assisting Instructional Mangers (teachers) in designing instruction to accommodate all students. 6. Monitoring student progress by meeting monthly with Instructional Managers (teachers) to get updates on the progress of students with special needs

3 7. Serving as the point of contact for parents of students with special needs and holding monthly phone conferences with special education families on students progress. 8. Completing monthly IEP Progress Reports for each student, and submitting monthly reports for each student to the Executive Director of Academics for the student s academic file. 9. Evaluating the effectiveness of the delivery of services and curriculum implementation of the school s education staff to meet the needs of students with special needs. 10. Coordinate annual formative and summative evaluations of the school s special education program. 11. Providing consultative and collaborative expert support for instructional and behavioral intervention programs to address the needs of students with special needs. 12. Providing training and consultation in the adaptation of curriculum to meet the needs of students with special needs. 13. Providing training and consultation in the documentation of behavioral interventions, methodologies, and curriculum. 14. Assisting other professional staff in diagnosis of learning disorders, development of planned remediation, and evaluation of student progress. 15. Testing students, as necessary, during state testing 16. Working closely with the Director of Student Support Services to compile and analyze data on internal assessments and make appropriate curricular decisions based on student information. 17. Demonstrating strong management of time and workload pacing in an extended instructional day (7:30 am 5:30 pm) 18. Participating in weekly Critical Friends Circles (Wednesdays 12:00 pm- 6:30pm) 19. Be available for Open Houses, Parent- Teacher Conferences, and other evening events involving parents. 20. Exhibiting positive rapport with students 21. Creating and fostering a positive learning environment 22. Putting in an extraordinary amount of time and effort to contribute to student and school success. 23. Pursuing professional growth by keeping current with issues, laws, and regulations regarding positive behavior interventions, special education, educational trends, and other issues related to children with special needs, and by participating in professional workshops to maintain a high level of skill and awareness of emerging methodologies.

4 24. Performing other duties as assigned. Parallel Duties of Resource Teacher Coordinator may include: 1) 504 Coordinator 2) IDEA Coordinator 3) Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant Excellent Candidates Will Demonstrate the Following Competencies: 1) Believe deeply in and show an affinity for the mission, goals, and core values of the Paulo Freire Charter School of Inquiry and Social Engagement. 2) Have high expectations for each student. 3) Possess a strong knowledge of content area 4) Demonstrate strong pedagogy. Skills & Qualifications 1) Bachelor s Degree from a competitive college or university, required. 2) Must hold a New Jersey, or Out- of- State, Secondary Teaching Certificate or Certificate of Eligibility. 3) Must hold a New Jersey, or Out- of- State, Special Education Teacher Certification or Certificate of Eligibility. 4) Must have 3+ years of experience teaching in an urban school setting, and working with special needs students in grades 7-12, preferably in a charter school environment. 5) Understanding of the nuances of urban school environments and school culture. 6) Must be able to pass a criminal background check. 7) Must have desire to be part of a team- oriented, mission- driven school. 8) Must have a strong work ethic, and a sense of humor. 9) Must be creative and detail oriented, with well- developed organization skills. 10) Must enjoy working with high school students; Experience in urban schools, highly preferred. 11) Demonstrated capacity in being a catalyst for change, well organized and collaborative.
