2 UN Global Compact Overview World s largest corporate sustainability ini4a4ve with over 8300 business signatories from 162 countries 80 Global Compact Local Networks that advance the ini4a4ve and its Ten Principles at the country level, but also help companies understand what responsible business means within different na4onal, cultural and language contexts Objectives 1. Make the Ten Principles part of business strategy, operations and culture everywhere 2. Take action in support of UN goals and issues Internalization Contribution to society/ development
3 UN Global Compact Principles Human Rights Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protec4on of interna4onally proclaimed human rights; and Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. Labour Standards Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of associa4on and the effec4ve recogni4on of the right to collec4ve bargaining; Principle 4: the elimina4on of all forms of forced and compulsory labour; Principle 5: the effec4ve aboli4on of child labour; and Principle 6: the elimina4on of discrimina4on in respect of employment and occupa4on. Environment Principle 7: Businesses should support a precau4onary approach to environmental challenges; Principle 8: undertake ini4a4ves to promote greater environmental responsibility; and Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies AnB- CorrupBon Principle 10: Businesses should work against all forms of corrup4on, including extor4on and bribery. The Global Compact is... The Global Compact is not... a voluntary ini4a4ve to promote and advance responsible business. a universal value framework to help business get organized. a global network of like- minded businesses and other stakeholders. a plaform for innova4on. a regulatory body. a subs4tute for regula4on at the na4onal or interna4onal level. a PR exercise.

5 Business for Peace: A Business Leadership PlaForm Drawing on over a decade of experience working with the private sector to explore the role of business in contribu4ng to peace, the UN Global Compact launched Business for Peace (B4P) in Iden4fied in Forbes as one of the five areas defining the future of CSR. PlaForm assists companies in implemen4ng responsible business prac4ces that are aligned with the UN Global Compact Ten Principles in conflict- affected and high- risk areas. PlaForm also catalyzes collabora4ve prac4cal ac4on to advance peace by leveraging business influence on the workplace, marketplace and local communi4es. Over 130 companies from 40 different countries and 20 Local Networks have joined Business for Peace Objective: Expand and deepen private sector action in support of peace- in the workplace, marketplace and local communities. Business Commitment 1. Commit to paying heightened attention to implementing the UN Global Compact Ten Principles in high- risk/conrlict- affected areas 2. Commit to taking action and engaging in partnerships to advance peace and development 3. Encouraged to use the annual Communication on Progress to make actions for peace public
6 Spectrum of Company Engagement in ConFlict- affected and High- risk Areas Risk Management Conflict Sensi4vity / Do No Harm Address Drivers of Conflict / Support Peace
7 ConFlict sensitivity / Do No Harm Companies and investors need a common reference point for construc4ve dialogue on what cons4tutes responsible business prac4ces in challenging opera4ng environments. Local Networks and other ini4a4ves can s4mulate learning and dialogue and promote collec4ve ac4on and innova4ve partnerships. Companies can implement responsible business practices by proactively addressing the following areas: Core Business Government Relations Local Stakeholder Engagement Strategic Social Investment
8 Case example: PaciFic Rubiales SituaBon Due to the social unrest in the area, on 19 July 2011, the company experienced its first blockade, forcing it to cease produc4on to ensure workers safety. Nego4a4ons followed. Towards mid- September, labour disputes with the company and its contractors caused a second blockade. The social and economic consequences of this affected the company s opera4ons and the stability of communi4es. The situa4on was further complicated by the increased migra4on of people to the area in search of employment in the oil industry. Guidance Point addressed Local Stakeholder Engagement - Guidance Point #2: In the context of exis4ng inter- and intragroup tensions, companies are encouraged to take a broad and inclusive approach towards stakeholder engagement.
9 Case example: Global Compact Network Canada Global Compact Network Canada has Rive multi- stakeholder working groups, each focusing on different topics related to the UN Global Compact Ten Principles Global Compact Network Canada, with the help of its working group, published a guidance to assist companies and their auditors assess the degree to which the company has adopted the critical policies and practices identiried by the Voluntary Principles, and is executing them in practice.
