2 Software test consulting case study 1 Key Activities Outcome IT consulting to assess, evaluate the core banking solution and existing data warehousing solution, and provide recommendations on IT organisation policies and procedures. Execute a people-process-technology study Assessed application architecture of the existing CBS and the IT infrastructure, and provided recommendations Formulate an IT strategy Reviewed the IS security architecture at a multinational bank through NISG Identified reusable components; reviewed CBS, DW, customer centric solutions, IT organisation, and IT Infrastructure to identify whether the same can meet the current and future business needs of the organisation Benchmarked organisation of CBS, data warehousing, and customer centric solutions (ATM, internet banking, etc.) against Peer Banks and off-the-shelf solutions CBS to CBS migration; assess homegrown CBS vis-a-vis offthe-shelf solutions Enabled the organisation to review the IS architecture Enabled the bank to identify the re-usable components to meet the future needs of the bank Enabled the bank to benchmark the CBS solution, customer centric solutions, delivery channels and data warehousing solutions. 1
3 Software test consulting case study 2 Interpret the ISO 9126 metrics as per the software product Help ensure compliance with the ISO 9126 standard for all the software products. Reviewed test policies and procedures to leverage any existing processes Conducted and documented interviews with client personnel Provided an overall assessment of various software testing functions Established ongoing coordination and status reporting protocols with the client Documented a test strategy report that highlighted the testing approach, roles and responsibilities, high level test schedule, trading partner participation, and impacted systems for ICD-10 Produced a short and long-term roadmap to outline the steps needed to close any gaps in preparation for ICD-10 testing. High priority issues and risks that were detected in the ICD-10 test assessment were able to be mitigated or resolved. A requirement traceability framework was put in place that included service domains, functions, and process flows The quality assurance/testing strategy included recommendations on testing techniques and methods Internal and external platform testing include thorough testing of the client s systems The testing strategy included recommendations on the necessary test environments and data stores that needed to be put in place to conduct the required testing The client was able to use the ICD-10 test strategy to communicate the testing approach and timeline to the rest of the programme and enterprise. 2
4 Software test consulting case study 3 To provide support to the client to obtain Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) of services. KPMG conducted semi-annual reviews of the project control, technical, and functional processes and products The IV&V assessed major areas of the project including: Project controls review focus on state and integrator processes for project management, monitoring and reporting Deliverable reviews focus on risk assessments, rootcause analysis and recommendations on the work plan, business transformation plan, system design plan, fitgap analysis, functional and technical design, and independent acceptance testing Technology reviews focus on technology standards, infrastructure and software requirements, configuration management, and system/network design Functional reviews focus on Joint Application Design (JAD) processes, requirements definition and traceability, and User Acceptance (UAT) and other testing processes KPMG also provided Deliverable Observation Reviews (DOR) on the logical data model, project work plan rebaseline effort, UAT (User Acceptance Testing) and pilot readiness, and operations and maintenance transition planning. The KPMG IV&V team helped the client by clearly articulating risks and making valuable recommendations The recommendations helped the client proactively plan for and mitigate risks before they negatively impacted the project. 3
5 Software test consulting case study 4 To standardise testing processes, and hence eliminate the delivery issues faced by the client across geographies End customer was facing multiple software quality and test delivery issues No standard testing process were followed across the client s testing engagements KPMG in India provided advisory on test process enhancement and analysed the varied test process across the client s testing projects The engagement was carried out in California, USA and in Kolkata, India. Created a Unified Testing Process Framework across their testing engagements, covering the end clients as well Provided a detailed Gap analysis report on the existing testing processes Developed an in-depth process management road map with clearly defined RASCI matrices. A leading weapons simulator company wanted Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) to be done for tank driving and firing simulators. Conducted a detailed review of the processes followed across the Software Development Life Cycle(SDLC) Provided client specific process improvement suggestions Implemented value added review processes that were not followed earlier Identified and rectified major defects in critical functionalities. Successfully conducted IV &V for the client Certified the client s development and testing process Validated the simulator product for critical business scenarios. 4
6 Software test consulting case study 5 Complete Test process assessment review to improve the client s testing processes and overall quality. Reviewed the test lifecycle across projects so that the findings can be used to streamline and standardise processes to cater to a larger client base Studied and reviewed all the testing artifacts used and produced during STLC Studied and reviewed the documentation with the intention to find gaps and suggest corrective measures Landscape assessment : included existing testing competency, landscape, strategy, methodologies, projects, processes and artifacts It include three phases starting from Gap Analysis & performance improvement roadmap, Process definition & implementation support, and implementation review & reporting KPMG in India scheduled a round of interviews with all the project stakeholders, recorded and documented the client s testing framework to find gaps in it, studied the testing artifacts and finally produced the implementation review, conducted an implementation assessment, suggested additional changes, and provided handover and KT. An industry standard process was in place for defining, managing and reporting on quality activities Streamlined and standardised process to cater to a larger client base Improved productivity Reduced cost of delivery Improved customer satisfaction. 5
