Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- HMS/DBY 12/4/13 Should all students use the same device or should students be able to choose their own device? Use the Same Same features benefit learning Easier to fix problems People may not be able to afford the top devices Have a back up Not on same ground if different devices Equal opportunity and programs Choose their Own You have what you like Some work better with a certain device Some already have a device and they wouldn t need to learn or buy another More room for customization Find other programs to help the class Always have access at home Wouldn t have to buy a calendar Personal use such as note-taking Using personal device makes it easy to transfer and make personal comments Can students take the device home? Why or why not? YES Continue work from school at home Use to it and easier and faster to work with Less technological difficulties Devices at home may not be as up to date as the school s device Yes but consequences if damaged To do homework To look up additional work Easy access to school work Students might not get all their work done at school NO Could be lost or stolen Easier to be damaged transporting No everyone has wifi Some students are not responsible How should teaching and learning change if you have access to technology? Use less paper Talk less face to face with teachers More efficient More on an online experience Less interactive Change the school calendar Take more classes online at home Less social More organized because less paper Easier to connect to school and get announcements

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- HMS/DBY 12/4/13 Get more done and get lessons done sooner Less of a school day - might not be one Online at home Still could take classes on on-school days Does the model look different at different grade levels? 1:1 for everyone starts at 7th - 12th grade 7th and 8th can use only during school day or can check out for a day at a time High school can check it out at beginning of year and turn it in at the end of the year then pay damage fees if necessary MacBooks Younger people shouldn t be as trusted Better devices for higher grades Combination - 5th and 6th graders check device out at beginning of day and 7-12 get device for a year More advanced version for the high schoolers because middle schoolers may not need a higher version Technology should advance as grade level goes up Elementary 5th and 6th grade get technology device but younger grades do not get their own device Kids taking high school level classes should get high school level devices High schoolers should buy the device so kids can have it for college. Middle schoolers should have the device provided by the district How do you see the school day schedule changing because of a 1:1 or BYOD environment? Don t think it will change because it would be with you all day and all you would have to worry about is charging it School day less challenging Spell check/less spelling errors More college campus feel Being able to take more online classes Shorter days Become more responsible for things Could shorten in between classes if you don t need to go to your locker Not much change besides organization differences More dependent on homework Have to be conscious of charging the device throughout the day May decrease time in class to go over specific details, i.e. MLA format How do we encourage teachers and students to use the devices rather than leave them in

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- HMS/DBY 12/4/13 backpacks? Have students make up missed work at home if device is not brought Get rid of paper Put more stuff online Device checks daily (participation points) Have material for day sent to device so we could add notes to it as we go over it Change things up so its not the same online things Take textbooks away Teachers could put assignments online so it almost forces the student to use their device Provide applications that are comparable to doing work by hand Don t offer alternatives to online work Tech services need to be readily available Provide training for teachers Work with teachers to develop curriculum conducive work Allow students to take devices home COMMENTS:

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- HST-MMS Should all students use the same device or should students be able to choose their own device? Use the Same Cost Classwork No more textbooks Talking to teachers Choose their Own Should get the device they need to do the best in school. Fair is not all the same; it is giving people what they need to do their best. If they choose something very large, they might not be able to carry it. There should be a standard of what is needed but still give kids a choice -- with qualifications. If students aren t comfortable with devices they can t get work done. Students struggle with certain devices -- they should be able to pick. Can students take the device home? Why or why not? Can take home Only take it home if absolutely needed for classwork/homework. What s the use of having a device for school if you can t use it for homework? Cannot take home No. Siblings could easily break it or mess with it. No because some kids don t use things properly or responsible enough. There should be some way to evaluate if a student is responsible enough. How should teaching and learning change if you have access to technology? Use the technology more often. would have more info and points of view. Interactive projects using the devices. More interested students for classes. How to find reputable sources. Students can get done faster with technology. No need for a sub - or at least, less use of one. People/teachers can teach through the ipads. Does the model look different at different grade levels?

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- HST-MMS More complex pieces of technology to the higher grade levels. Sizes would matter for different grade levels. The student have more access to websites the higher the grades. Students are trusted with more pieces of technology as they get older. Less technology classes as you get older. Learn mostly in elementary grades. Able to take higher class levels at your own speed. Learn how to work with computers when you re young. How do you see the school day schedule changing because of a 1:1 or BYOD environment? Could be shorter - internet capabilities increase efficiency. Could be longer - teaching how to use devices to students that aren t tech savvy. Students could be involved more. Have one extra period for how to use a device. Students would be more interested to use their device. Students will become quicker which would mean less time at school. Possibly still 7 periods, but a study hall to let kids start on homework. Add a technology class - take away a high school technology class. How do we encourage teachers and students to use the devices rather than leave them in backpacks? Teachers could incorporate the devices in the lesson plan. Tell the students to bring the device to class. Encourage using videos for learning. Put all textbooks online. Have an online planner. Face-Time and Skype for group projects. Encourage online research. Make all projects online. Put study guides online. Create interactive programs for the students to use. COMMENTS:

Student Task Force - HST MMS - Pros & Cons 1:1 DEVICE BYOD DEVICE PRO CON PRO Equal, fair, everyone has the same Responsibility School district wouldn't be Everyone device would have the same Cost issue / costs a lot paying Studying for is iteasy device When absent, could still do work Broken or stolen district will have to Always have it with you Studying is easy pay Too for much the data device Taxes wouldn't go up Teachers can easily contact you Cost problems Comfortable with the device when No reason needed for textbooks Untrustworthy students Compatibility with other home Teachers could skype Transport to/from school devices Benefit to the poor people who Student safety Easier don't have their own device Use for non-school purposes No reason to steal other's Damage or broken items would need replacing

CON Technology problem Family device Data/Storage Many different capabilities Some amongst families devices don't have money May for devices not meet school Not standards/expectations as able to track activity Untrustworthiness Problem if you forget or it gets stolen

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- WMS-DAV 10/31/13 Should all students use the same device or should students be able to choose their own device? Use the Same Different devices means they do different things. Less expensive. Everyone equal -- no disadvantages. Choose their Own Choosing their own would create an uneven playing field for students. Certain ones are better for different classes. Have classroom sets, check out certain devices as needed. Some work well with familiar devices. Would need standardized programs. Can students take the device home? Why or why not? Can take home Wouldn t need to bring anything to school. Really organized. When absent/sick, you could still access the work/class. Access to online classes. Easier to grade/graded instantly. Group projects can be worked on at home. Easier to read work (no sloppy handwriting). Some kids don t have other devices at home to work on there. All your notes and work would be on it. if you don t take them home, it would be essentially the same as the laptop carts. Cannot take home Chance of being stolen, lost, sold. If forgot at home, couldn t do any work. Put too much responsibility on people/requires too much trust in students. You would need to trust your own wi-fi. How should teaching and learning change if you have access to technology? Teachers would have to become familiar with the technology. There would be a lot of obstacles with blocked websites. Wi-fi is slow and it would take time to be able to start class. Students would have more access to information. Students won t be distracted by phones if their hands are busy. Learning the technology would have to be a part of the class. Assignments will be online, which is easier for students and for teachers to check. Teachers would have to be informed on the resources. Technology access will change teaching and learning because answers and information are already there. Sometimes books are better because you have to find the answer yourself. It may not change even with technology Does the model look different at different grade levels?

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- WMS-DAV 10/31/13 Unil high school, students might not be responsible enough to bring a device home. Students taking high school classes during middle school would need access to devices for those classes. Elementary school students should be using devices to get to know the technology. Elementary school and middle school students should have access to laptops or tablets that stay at the school. How do you see the school day schedule changing because of a 1:1 or BYOD environment? There will be new resources (w/google). It is more organized. There will be more collaboration opportunities. More time will be spent on technical difficulties Still need to keep handwriting. Eco-friendly. Time would be needed to teach the technology. How do we encourage teachers and students to use the devices rather than leave them in backpacks? Train the teachers how to use them. students will use them if the teachers require it. It s sort of a non-existent problem. Please improve the wi-fi. Teachers could take a summer class. COMMENTS: Need to more clearly define 1:1 (school provides) and BYOD before first partner activity. 20/21 students believe all student should have their own device at school 6/21 students have been to the MILC. Tech support at the ILC Concern with funding. Is BYOD or 1:1 really possible? Wi-fi needs to be upgraded. Would need to add charging stations. Need to get ahead -- other schools are doing this so we are going to be behind. Think it through -- don t get in a hurry. It needs to be done right. Test some kids on how they work with some devices. Some students want textbooks rather than technology (online). Check devices out from technology room or library to have the technology stay at the school. Offer summer classes for technology.

Student Task Force - Questions/Answers -- WMS-DAV 10/31/13 Laptops would be most beneficial Need the help of technology professionals to figure out what infrastructure changes are needed -- like wi-fi. I understand that we are going to buy a device for students. You feel that textbooks simply are not effective. While I entirely disagree, you will go through with it anyway. so, please buy the laptops. It isn t that ipads are easy to use, it is that they re incompatible with so many things. The improvement our district is trying to force upon our community with technology usage is a great step to modern learning styles. We need to take time to put to use correct and valuable understanding of this change. Meetings should be more formal and less elementary. Technology is a great idea but we don t need it now; we need to make the price and everything right. I know life isn t fair but that doesn t mean we can t wait a little so it CAN be equal. I think this is hard to know when to start because if you invest in juniors and seniors, it may be a waste; but if you don t, it could be a disadvantage. Start with the freshman next year. I think you should think through the decision, but it needs to happen in the next year or two to get on the same levels as other schools. We should start with freshman or sophomore class then carry it out with them and then do phases up until that class graduates. Without a doubt, students should have 1:1 devices, it is worth some of the problems. I think the devices should be online on the devices so the load is lighter and there isn t an excuse to forget them. I liked the discussion format. Keep the small group idea but expanding to the large group worked well. In terms of the format of the discussion, I believe the fishbowl type of talk would be more beneficial. We all seemed to share more at the end when there was less control over the discussion.
