2 Welcome Professor Catherine Bennett. The School of Health and Social Development brings together an exciting group of around 80 academic staff and researchers from a wide diversity of disciplines and backgrounds. The unique characteristic of the School is that it connects research perspectives that have not previously been mainstream themes into highly socially responsive, progressive and innovative approaches to human wellbeing and quality of life. In its teaching and research, the School addresses the complex connections between determinants of health in their broadest sense and social development in a variety of settings. The School offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs and short courses specifically developed to enable students to achieve their professional, career and academic goals. At undergraduate level the School offers courses in public health and health promotion, social work, occupational therapy, and health sciences. The postgraduate course offerings are in health promotion, health and human services management, public health, and social work. Each of these courses are highly regarded by the professions and industry, and provide a sound base for research degrees if desired. The School s research focuses on issues of social diversity and improving the health of individuals and groups. Much of the research is conducted in partnership with communities and organisations in the health and social services sector. Throughout our research there is an acute awareness of the political, social and cultural dimensions of public health; social work; workplace wellbeing; employment and marginalisation; sexuality; the environment; and the generation of supportive environments for children, young people, and disadvantaged groups in society. Please read on to see what makes Deakin University such a vibrant and supportive place to study. 4 Heading About postgraduate study What is postgraduate study? Postgraduate courses are for students who have completed an undergraduate degree or for those with significant work experience. You can start postgraduate studies to advance your career or change direction to a completely new field. It can also give you the opportunity to pursue study in a discipline area of personal interest. In particular, it can allow you to extend your undergraduate studies through research degrees where you can pursue your own theories or ideas at a high conceptual level. You may undertake postgraduate study by coursework or research. The best option for you will depend on your reasons for studying. What are coursework programs? A postgraduate coursework degree typically involves a series of units, with specific coursework and assessments. Our postgraduate coursework programs give you the opportunity to complete a graduate certificate (designed to enable you to develop skills in a specialised area not necessarily related to your undergraduate degree), graduate diploma (more specialised and generally vocationallyfocused) or masters by coursework (intensive course in which the qualification is directly relevant to your career) in a structured learning format. What are research degrees? A research degree involves completing an approved program of research under the guidance of one or more supervisors within a prescribed time period. Research degree programs encourage you to develop independent research skills and are for students who want to pursue their own theories and ideas at a high conceptual level. Deakin offers three types of research degrees masters by research (usually involving some coursework and a thesis of not more than words), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (usually involving some coursework and a thesis of not more than words) and Doctor of Psychology (combining a research project, coursework and structured research tasks that are specifically related to professional practice and are often carried out in the workplace). What is Credit for Prior Learning? Deakin University aims to provide students with as much credit as possible for relevant approved prior study or informal learning that exceeds the normal entrance requirements for the course of interest and is within the constraints of specific course regulations. There are two aspects to Credit for Prior Learning: credit may be transferred to your Deakin program from completed or partially completed studies you have undertaken at other accredited institutions; and credit may be granted on the basis of knowledge and skills acquired through uncredentialed learning. Students are required to complete a minimum of one third of their course at Deakin. Credit for Prior Learning will be determined on a case by-case basis. Benefits of postgraduate study No matter what stage of your career you are at, postgraduate study can help you stand out in the marketplace and expand your networks. Research found the main benefits of postgraduate study are: increased income on average, people with postgraduate qualifications earn as much as $ more per year compared to those with only a bachelors degree (Postgraduate Destinations 2007, produced by Graduate Careers Australia) increased job satisfaction a 2010 survey* found that students who completed Deakin postgraduate programs increased their job satisfaction by 93 per cent within 12 months career advancement a 2010 survey* of Deakin graduates found that 42 per cent attained a more senior position within 12 months of completing their postgraduate studies. * Research conducted by First Point Research and Consulting in

8 Clinical Exercise Physiology Exercise physiology is a growing allied health specialty. Clinical exercise physiologists are trained to work with patients with chronic disease where exercise training has been shown to be of therapeutic benefit, including but not limited to cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, and metabolic disorders. Industry accreditation and professional recognition Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). AEPs are university-trained clinical exercise practitioners who are professionally accredited at the AEP level by Exercise and Sport Science Australia (ESSA). Graduates who gain registration as an AEP with ESSA will also meet the eligibility criteria to register with Medicare, WorkSafe and other compensable schemes as an allied health professional service provider. Careers As an AEP you will assess, design, implement and evaluate exercise programs mainly for individuals with chronic conditions or disability, or who are recovering from injury. You may find employment in medical, occupational, community or sports rehabilitation, or in case management through compensable schemes such as Medicare, Worksafe or the TAC. Pathways Graduates of Deakin University s Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science from 2011, who completed the ESSA sequence of units, are eligible for accreditation from ESSA as an exercise scientist, and will satisfy the admission requirements for application to the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology provided they can demonstrate evidence of 140 hours of exercise service delivery for apparently healthy clientele. Scholarships Deakin offers a variety of scholarships to help support students financially during their studies, including a range of academic scholarships that are awarded to high-achieving students. For more information about scholarships visit scholarships. You may also wish to search broadly for scholarships via the internet. 9 key 3 PT b f g w x Course duration in years Part time Melbourne Burwood Campus Geelong Waterfront Campus Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus Warrnambool Campus Off campus Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology 1.5 b Course code: H743 Admission requirements: Applicants must be able to demonstrate eligibility for exercise scientist accreditation from Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) and provide evidence of 140 hours of exercise service delivery for apparently healthy clientele. Selection is primarily based on academic performance as indicated by an applicant s previous academic record. The Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology aims to produce quality exercise physiologists who can utilise exercise to prevent and rehabilitate disease and injury in the community. Throughout the course you will acquire advanced knowledge of both the theoretical and applied aspects of clinical exercise physiology, and high-level skills in analysing, evaluating and professionally applying your knowledge to clinical and community populations. You will develop capacity to creatively and flexibly apply your knowledge and skills to situations, and be able to think in a rigorous and independent manner. Course structure The Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology consists of 12 credit points of study. Frequently asked questions Why are so many prerequisites required? In order for the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology to be offered over 18 months and still be eligible for accreditation by ESSA, significant exercise physiology knowledge must be demonstrated before entry into the course. No application for entry into the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology will be approved, nor an application be considered, until all prerequisites have been met. What if I do not have relevant prior study in exercise physiology and advanced exercise physiology? Perhaps you have a science degree or an allied health-related degree but do not have all the relevant subjects to satisfy the admission requirements for application to this course. These subjects can be taken as non-award units from any university offering them and are defined as units of study in the areas of exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport and exercise psychology, and motor control/motor learning/skill acquisition that have a prerequisite in the same discipline and in the same course (note: can be either core or elective units). What are Deakin undergraduate pathways to the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology? What are other pathways? There are a number of undergraduate courses at Deakin and other institutions that can be used as a pathway into the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology, with the inclusion of appropriate elective units. These include a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science or Human Movement with the relevant elective units; Bachelor of Health Sciences with the relevant elective units; science degrees; and allied health degrees such as physiotherapy, chiropractic, occupational therapy, nursing, myotherapy, health psychology and clinical psychology. Completion of the degrees does not guarantee a place in the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology. Students undertaking any of these undergraduate courses with the intention of applying for entry into the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology are encouraged to speak with the Course Adviser to ensure the relevant elective units are incorporated into their undergraduate degree. Is it possible to defer for 12 months if I get an offer? No, deferment is not normal practice for postgraduate courses. If you apply and subsequently receive an offer to commence the course in 2011 but do not wish to study in that year, you may wish to strengthen your experience and credentials throughout 2011 and then apply with a stronger application at the end of 2011 for consideration for commencement in How many places are available in this course? Approximately 40 places will be offered in It is anticipated that this number may increase in Are Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) available in the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology? Yes, at this stage we anticipate that all places for 2012 will be Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). Will classes held during the day or evening or both? Classes will be conducted during the day. Where should I record the 140 hours of exercise service delivery for apparently healthy clientele? Your hours of exercise service delivery should be recorded in the ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist Logbook for the purposes of future accreditation as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, in addition to the ESSA Accredited Exercise Scientist Logbook for the purposes of future membership of ESSA. Alternatively, it is acceptable (and perhaps more convenient) for you to photocopy the logbook entries for the ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist Logbook and use this for your exercise scientist (ES) application with ESSA. This will be accepted by ESSA. I have been told that if I can complete the 140 hours of exercise service delivery for apparently healthy clientele by mid January, then I am still eligible for a place in this course, and may receive a conditional offer until I complete the practicum. Is this true? Yes. A conditional offer may be granted for a specified period of time depending on the strength of the rest of your application. The offer will lapse by the specified date if you do not provide evidence of completion of the 140 hours of service delivery. 7.

The course content taught me that it is the diversity of a community that makes it stronger, to respect this diversity and embrace it, she says. While she found preparing assignments and meeting deadlines challenging, Ronamali says the course taught her to open my mind to new concepts and ways of learning and coping with the unknown. Being an international student who was not only adjusting to living in a different country but to the idea of living without the direct support of her family, she says she particularly valued the supportive and approachable attitude of the teaching staff. The course content taught me that it is the diversity of a community that makes it stronger, to respect this diversity and embrace it. Ronamali is currently employed as a Research Assistant, working on an early language and literacy development study at the not-for-profit research and development organisation, the Parenting Research Centre, in East Melbourne, but she hopes to one day return to Deakin as a member of its teaching staff. Having already worked on a research project with Associate Professor Mardie Townsend, looking at literature surrounding the mental health benefits gained from contact with nature, Ronamali also hopes to further contribute to the environmental health arena through research and community development or health promotion work. She says her postgraduate study at Deakin left her ready to take on the real world. And the teaching staff and other students make your learning experience and journey one that you will always treasure. 11.

Further information VicHealth Public Health Association of Australia Department of Human Services Rhonda Garad Graduate Diploma of Health Promotion, Deakin University, 2008 Master of Public Health, Deakin University, 2009 Currently: Graduate Certificate of Education Off campus Employed: Health Promotion Practitioner After 20 years working as a nurse and then a naturopath, Rhonda Garad decided a career change was needed and started looking at her options for returning to study. I soon became aware that Deakin was a university with great online learning options in health. As a working mother it was impossible for me to attend lectures, so online learning has been a god send. I began with a Graduate Diploma of Health Promotion then went on to a Master of Public Health and now I m completing a Graduate Certificate of Education, she says. After completing her Graduate Diploma of Health Promotion, Rhonda gained employment as a health promotion practitioner with Southern Health one of the largest health organisations in Melbourne s south-east. She now also works as a part-time university lecturer and tutor. I felt my Deakin studies prepared me well for my roles, which are varied, challenging and require a range of skills and knowledge. It s no exaggeration to say that making the decision to study has changed my life. I would not be where I am today without Deakin and its flexible learning options. Rhonda says Deakin s health promotion course not only helped develop her written skills, but equipped her with historical and contextual health information. I also gained a knowledge of vital health promotion skills around the planning, implementing and evaluating of health promotion projects and the masters degree developed my research skills and knowledge, she explains. Rhonda says she enjoyed every aspect of her studies at Deakin. The greatest thrill was in the early stages as I slowly watched my grades improve as I began to understand how to study effectively. Deakin s staff were exceptionally helpful and willing to do whatever it took to help get me through. She says consistency and discipline are the two keys to successful postgraduate study. It is not about how bright you are but how committed you are to complete it. It s no exaggeration to say that making the decision to study has changed my life. I would not be where I am today without Deakin and its flexible learning options. 15.

18 Public Health Master of Public Health 1.5 b Course code: H747 Admission requirements: Applicants will normally have an undergraduate degree and have two years of relevant professional practice. Applicants must also submit a written statement outlining reasons for undertaking the course and demonstrated interest and/or involvement in professional activities related to public health. Alternative admission may be granted to applicants who can demonstrate that they have gained sufficient prerequisite knowledge and skills through work related training and/or experience. Following successful completion of the course, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain and improve upon existing health-promoting environments, the capacity to carry out research to identify public health priorities and generate initiatives for policy and action, and the ability to develop strategies to ensure equity in the health system and interventions to promote the health of disadvantaged groups. Completing the degree by coursework with a minor thesis ensures you have a broad-based understanding of the determinants of health in populations, and the capacity for in-depth study and research in a relevant area of public health specialisation. Career opportunities for graduates of the Master of Public Health exist in government, research, non-government organisations, international non-government organisations, healthcare, community and other settings, either local or global.
