1 Each year, the Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO) identifies their priorities and develops strategies on how best to address them. In 2015, LUMCO launched the Cities of Tomorrow Student Ideas Competition, asking Ontario s post-secondary student to suggest innovative solutions to these challenges. Hundreds of students signed up to compete, with 36 teams eventually submitting proposals. Our expert panel reviewed these ideas and selected 12 teams to compete in 4 different categories corresponding to the pressing needs of Ontario s Big Cities. These teams will compete at the Cities of Tomorrow Showcase for cash prizes on February 2 nd and 3 rd, Daniels Spectrum Lounge The Cities of Tomorrow Showcase is Ontario s Big City Mayors celebration of municipal policy innovation, to be held at the Daniels Spectrum in Toronto. The event will take place over 2 days from Tuesday, Feb. 2 nd to Wednesday, Feb. 3 rd, LUMCO Mayors will be holding a VIP lunch reception at noon in the Artscape lounge. The event will proceed over the following afternoon and all-day Feb. 3 rd. The event will feature keynote speakers, 4 different student competitions, and several panels discussing the way forward on infrastructure planning and development policy in Ontario. Your company will have many opportunities to be a part of this event, such as invitations to be panelists, judges, moderators or speakers.. The Large Urban Mayor s Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO) represents 67% of Ontario s population. Currently there are 27 Ontario Big City Mayors with populations of over 100,000 residents in Ontario. LUMCO ultimately represents and expresses the large urban municipal viewpoint within the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and to other authorities and levels of Government. 4 It has been an honour to be chosen by my 26 colleagues from across Ontario to serve as the Chair of the Large Urban Mayors Caucus of Ontario (LUMCO) was an exciting year for LUMCO as we launched the Cities of Tomorrow Student Ideas Competition. I hope you will be able to join myself and other LUMCO mayors at the Showcase and the VIP lunch reception on Feb. 2 nd. I am pleased to attach our preliminary agenda to this package, and hope you see many opportunities participate in the Showcase as a speaker, moderator, panelist, or judge. Our expert panel has selected 12 proposals that will be presented at the Showcase across 4 different competitions, each addressing one of our priorities. Over the coming months, expert judges and Ontario s Big City Mayors will be providing feedback to these students to prepare them for their presentations at the Showcase. I know many of you are already partnering with post-secondary Institutions and bringing innovative solutions to market and the Cities of Tomorrow Showcase will be an ideal venue to highlight and promote these innovative products, services and ideas.
