3 NOTE: Students accepted to the Emergency Medical Science Program must submit a completed medical health fm to the Direct of Emergency Medical Science Programs by the first day of the fall semester, which will include a vaccination tracker. Additionally, a criminal background check and drug screening are required 30 days pri to the start of clinical rotations. The infmation provided in the student medical fm, criminal background check and drug screening is not considered in the admission decision. It is possible, however, that the results may prevent the applicant from participating in the clinical rotations and thus from continuing in the program. NOTE: Students with pierced ears may wear only one small post earring in each ear. No other visible body piercings, naments, gauging instruments are allowed. Accreditation: The Coastal Carolina Community College EMS Program currently holds a Letter of Review (LoR) from the accreditation body of CoAEMSP (Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs f the Emergency Medical Service Professions). This is the official designation that a paramedic program is in the process of becoming accredited. CCCC EMS Program must still complete the entire process to demonstrate substantial compliance with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accreditation standards, and is not guaranteed an award of accreditation, however holding a LoR does signify that the program is making satisfacty progress in the accreditation process. As such, the National Registry of EMT recognizes graduates of CAAHEP accredited programs as well as graduates of programs holding a CoAEMSP LoR, as eligible f the national paramedic certification examinations. 4 FALL 2016 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SCIENCE Associate in Applied Science A45340 Curriculum Description The Emergency Medical Science curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge, skills and attributes to provide advanced emergency medical care as a paramedic f critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system and prepares graduates to enter the wkfce. Students will gain complex knowledge, competency, and experience while employing evidence based practice under medical oversight, and serve as a link from the scene into the healthcare system. Graduates of this program may be eligible to take state and/ national certification examinations. Employment opptunities include providers of emergency medical services, fire departments, rescue agencies, hospital specialty areas, industry, educational and government agencies. Coastal Carolina Community College requires that students complete all degree requirements to establish eligibility to take the paramedic certification examination. 5 ACADEMIC REGULATIONS Students must maintain the grade point average in accdance with the college policy Satisfacty Academic Progress as described in the college catalog. Additional EMS Academic Regulations a. Emergency Medical Science Courses: Students must complete all courses with an EMS MED prefix with a grade of C higher in der to progress in the Emergency Medical Science Program. If the student does not receive a grade of C higher in any Emergency Medical Science course Medical Terminology, he/she will be required to withdraw from the Emergency Medical Science Program. b. Biology Requirement of BIO 168 and 169: BIO 168 and BIO 169 must be completed by the beginning of the third semester of the Emergency Medical Science Program with a grade of D higher to ensure student success. If the student does not successfully meet the BIO 168 and BIO 169 requirement they will be required to withdraw from the Emergency Medical Science Program. c. All Other Non-EMS Courses: A student who drops receives an F in any non-ems (related) courses except BIO 168 and 169 may be permitted to continue, provided the student can successfully complete the course by the end of the summer session following their expected date of graduation. ADMISSIONS INFORMATION THE APPLICATION PERIOD FOR THE 2016 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SCIENCE PROGRAM BEGINS MARCH 1, 2016 AND ENDS AUGUST 1, LEVEL I / ADMISSIONS R EQUIREMENTS: It is the applicant s responsibility to ensure that the following requirements are met befe making a Level II application appointment: NC DAP Reading/ English A. Submit a current application to the Coastal Carolina Community College Admissions Office B. Submit official transcript(s) to the Admissions Office - High school, High School Equivalency, Adult High School - All colleges schools attended after high school - CLEP (College Level Examination) sces - AP (Advanced Placement) sces C. Receive minimum placement sces on one (1) of the placement tests listed below. F Limited Enrollment Allied Health Programs, tests must have been taken ON OR AFTER August 1, 2013, to be valid. 6 D. Anatomy and Physiology classes must be completed within five (5) years of the entry term of the program (on after Fall 2011). Please check with the appropriate student services personnel (Financial Aid, Veteran s Affairs, etc) to determine how taking these related classes will affect your Pell, VA, etc. E. All current returning CCCC students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 higher, and have pri approval of the counsel in charge of Emergency Medical Science admissions and the Direct of EMS Programs befe being eligible to apply. F. Applicants seeking readmission transfer into the Emergency Medical Science Program must meet all current requirements. Only two academic readmissions will be permitted contingent upon space availability and at the discretion of the Direct of EMS Programs. An applicant may request one of the following options if he she does not achieve the required sces on placement tests: Option #1: If the applicant has successfully completed college-level English and/ math classes with final grades of C higher within the past five years is able to complete the developmental class(es) recommended by the placement test PRIOR TO THE APPLICATION DEADLINE and earn (a) final grade(s) of P, the applicant may request that the placement test requirements be waived. Option #2: If the applicant has taken the placement test once and is unable to complete the recommended developmental class(es) pri to the admission deadline, he she may request permission from the Direct of Admissions his/her designee to retake all ptions of the placement test one additional time. It is strongly recommended that a candidate who does not receive the necessary minimum placement test sces in any area either review and retest, take the appropriate developmental course(s) suggested based on the test results befe retesting. If the applicant cannot meet placement requirements under the available options, he she will be advised to delay applying f the Emergency Medical Science Program f at least a year. The applicant is encouraged to use this time to crect any remaining deficiencies. If the applicant chooses to apply f a later year, the applicant MUST qualify under the admissions requirements in effect f that particular year. LEVEL II / ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS: Once the Level I criteria have been met, the applicant will be required to make an appointment with the counsel f EMS to do the following: 1. Complete a Level II Emergency Medical Science application. 2. Contact the Direct of EMS Programs f an interview. The Level II application must be completed with the counsel f Emergency Medical Science no later than 5:00 p.m. on August 1, After August 1, 2016, approved Level II applicants will be considered on a space available basis. Financial aid applicants are encouraged to apply befe June 13, 2016, in der to have access to their financial aid award f registration and purchase of books and supplies. Admissions Procedures Regarding Qualified Applicants Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis after successful completion of Level I and Level II requirements. The first thirty (30) qualified applicants will be admitted to the Fall 2016 Emergency Medical Science Program. All other qualified candidates who apply by the deadline will be placed on an alternate list in the der in which they apply. Should any of the iginally accepted candidates be unable to enter the program, alternates will be selected to take their places in the der in which they applied. If alternates apply on the same date, then the time the level II application was received will be used to determine which alternate is admitted first. 5

7 Students accepted to the program must submit a completed medical health fm to the Direct of Emergency Medical Science Programs, as well as a vaccination tracker purchased through CertifiedBackground.com, by September 1, Students assigned to approved clinical practicum sites will be required to undergo drug testing and complete a criminal background check, both through certifiedbackground.com, no me than 30 days pri to beginning clinical rotations. A positive finding on the drug screen the results of the criminal background check may prevent the student from continuing in the program. The decision will be made by Clinical Agency Representatives in consultation with the College. Special Note: If you have any questions regarding the submission of the medical health fm, criminal background check drug screening, how the submission of these documents may affect your progression in the program, please contact Mr. Jody Bullock at (910) PRIOR to enrollment. Students are required to purchase Platinum Planner and EMS Testing at the beginning of the first semester of the EMS Program. Costs are calculated annually by the company. Students not admitted to the Emergency Medical Science Program must reactivate their admission packets and reapply if they wish to be considered f a future class. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Once enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science Program, students will be required to 1. Purchase liability insurance annually. 2. Demonstrate physical health as evidenced by the results of a physical exam and emotional health as evidenced by appropriate behavi. 3. Complete all required inoculations. 4. Adhere to the student guidelines specific to the Emergency Medical Science Program. 5. Travel at own expense to complete clinical and field training. COMMUNICABLE DISEASE STATEMENT Students enrolled in the Emergency Medical Science Program are at risk of exposure to blood and body fluids, and the potential does exist f transmission of bloodbne and other infectious diseases during patient care activities. The Americans with Disabilities Act fbids discrimination against patients with HIV; therefe, students are required to treat all patients assigned, regardless of the disease state of the patient. Refusal to treat any patient may affect the student s academic progress. Students who enter the Emergency Medical Science Program will be required to read and sign a communicable disease statement and waiver of liability fm. This fm will become a part of the student s permanent recd and will state that the student: 1. Has been infmed of his/her risk f exposure to blood and body fluids. 2. Understands the potential f transmission of bloodbne diseases during patient care activities. 3. Agrees to care f all patients that are assigned to him/her. The student and a witness must sign the communicable disease statement. Students who are mins must have the statement signed by a parent legal guardian. A copy of the complete Communicable Disease Statement is available in the program manual. NOTES Students accepted to the Emergency Medical Science Program must attend an ientation meeting in July. They will register f fall classes at that time. Students are strongly advised to make photocopies of their completed medical fm f their own recds. 6

8 Students admitted to the Emergency Medical Science Program need to be aware of the imptance of regular class attendance in der to be successful in their classes. It is vital to have child care arrangements wked out in advance in case of children s illnesses, teacher wk days, etc. If excess absences are accumulated, the student will be withdrawn from the program in accdance with the attendance policy in the college catalog. Students must adhere to all clinical site requirements, including dress code, hygiene and piercing/tattoo regulations. Students are strongly advised to limit the number of hours they are employed in der to maximize their potential f academic success in the Emergency Medical Science Program.
