Providing every member access to the voting process is big step toward increasing your involvement. AAMN is the voice for men in nursing and the election is your way of forming Assembly policy. The election will be conducted from September 23 to October 5, Be sure to vote. CANDIDATES FOR OFFICERS AND BOARD OF DIRECTORS
PRESIDENT-ELECT CANDIDATE (unopposed) Bob Patterson, RN, MSN I wish to be considered for President Elect because I strongly believe in the mission, values, and work of AAMN and want the opportunity to move the organization forward in small ways and a few big ways. I will aggressively seek out your best ideas and simply won t just have an open door, but will be knocking on your door, asking for your thoughts, your criticisms, and your willingness to step up and share the leadership with me and the other officers. My enthusiasm for positioning our organization for the future of nursing is paramount to my goals for it. I ve had over 30 years of nursing experience, with 15 of those years in administrative roles. I obtained a MSN from San Francisco State University in 2004 and have held several positions during the course of my career, including Cardiac Rehab Program Director, Director of Nursing Resources and, Director of Nursing Informatics & Nursing Resources. Currently, I oversee the operations of the California Institute for Nursing and Health Care, a nationally recognized, non-profit organization dedicated to developing solutions that build and sustain a quality nursing workforce in California. I developed and lead the California Campaign for Men in Nursing, which is contributing in the crusade for priorities for men in nursing in California, during which time I co-produced two high school recruitment videos, which have received national recognition. I m passionate about the recruitment of men in nursing and was the 2012 recipient of the Association of California Nurse Leader s (ACNL), Best Practice Recruitment, Retention, and Outreach award, for this work. I began my involvement with the AAMN five years ago and co-founded the first chapter in California, holding the position of president for two terms. Moreover, I ve held two national Board terms, which included roles of Education Chair and Treasurer. If you give me this opportunity, I m going to personally invest in it just as each of you is personally investing in me.
SECRETARY CANDIDATES Anthony James Roberson I am honored to be considered for the position of Secretary of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. I hold the PhD in Nursing Science and undergraduate and MSN (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner) degrees. My professional nursing experience has been in private and academic settings. I currently serve as Associate Professor at the University of Miami, School of Nursing & Health Studies. In 2011, two colleagues and I founded the first chapter (Capstone) of the AAMN in the State of Alabama. I served as President of the chapter ( ) and the chapter s faculty advisor ( ). During my two year leadership of the chapter, we grew from 3 to over 35 active members in one, held two large community health screenings along with 3 fund raising events to support the health screenings. Although I mentored all student officers during the year, I particularly obtained a better appreciation of the role of Secretary while serving as faculty advisor. The Secretary position requires a unique set of skills: 1. attention to detail, 2. ability to meet deadlines, respond to requests in a timely manner, and effectively communicate and work well with others, and 3. the willingness to serve and support the other officers and members of the organization. I possess these essential attributes to serve as your Secretary. The AAMN is currently in a very good position in terms of membership and growth. Our greatest challenge as a group is to continue momentum well into the future, along with increasing our national/international presence. We can do this by identifying, tapping into, and channeling the many talents of our organizations members. If I am fortunate to receive your vote, I will use my role and influence as Secretary to serve you and further advance the overall mission and goals of the organization.
Jonathan Lee I graduated from the UCLA School of Nursing in 2012 and am now working on a transplant-telemetry unit at UC Davis Medical Center. While at UCLA, I was the co-founder and president of AAMN's UCLA chapter, one of the largest in the Assembly and one of the groups changing the perception of nursing at UCLA. I am a current board member of AAMN, a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, and also a contributing author for Dr. Chris Coleman's recent book, Man Up! A Practical Guide for Men in Nursing. As secretary, I will work with the board to address the concerns of nursing students, who make up 40% of AAMN members, and working nurses. As a clinical nurse and recent nursing school graduate, I understand that we often face pervasive discrimination, limited support, and a difficult economy. With the dramatic changes taking place in health care, men in nursing face enormous challenges as well as tremendous opportunities. In the midst of a critical nursing shortage nationwide and around the world, we are needed more than ever before, and it falls to us to meet the burgeoning needs of the population. The Assembly and all men in nursing must inspire and lead exceptional, compassionate, and diverse men into the profession. We also need to collaborate with women in nursing to promote gender parity in the profession. Nursing has long been held back by a lack of gender parity, but as a balanced and united profession, we have the opportunity to advance the health of our patients and promote the nursing profession in kind.
BOARD MEMBER CANDIDATES John Brion John Brion, PhD, RN has been an RN for 24 years and is a longtime member of AAMN. In addition to his nursing credentials, John holds B.A degrees in history, psychology and sociology and is currently finishing a post-masters certificate in psychiatric mental health nursing. Among the positions he has held are clinical positions in emergency nursing, administrative positions with the Ohio Department of Health and as the executive director of Ohio's Board of Nursing. Since completing his PhD at Ohio State in 2007, John has held a faculty position at Duke University but has recently accepted a faculty position at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. While at Duke, John helped found the Duke chapter of AAMN, known as DAAMN. In addition, he was pivotal in having Duke host the 2010 AAMN annual conference and efforts to earn Duke that year s award as a "Best School for Men in Nursing". John is very hopeful to have an opportunity to add his efforts and experience to AAMN's leadership and help take the group into the future. Normajean Colby Normajean Colby RN, PhD, CNE holds her doctorate from Widener University and is currently an Assistant Professor in their School of Nursing. Having served as full-time faculty for seventeen years, she coordinates the Pediatric Nursing courses among other undergraduate and graduate courses. This candidate s Master s degree includes a tract in Burn, Emergency, Trauma Nursing. Her clinical experience includes critical care nursing at the Children s Hospital of Philadelphia, advanced practice nursing at DuPont Hospital for Children, and various nursing responsibilities including camp nurse and home care nursing. Her dissertation explored perceptions of the essence of nursing as perceived by nurses who are men. Research interests include gender disparities, diversity, and interprofessional collaboration. A member of AAMN since 2010, she was a Founding Member in the chartering of the Greater Philadelphia Area Chapter where she has been appointed Special Assistant to the President. Dr. Colby believes that member recruitment and lack of participation are issues faced by AAMN, as well as by other professional nursing organizations today. Challenges that face men in nursing include the gender biases, inequities, and stereotypes that have been discussed for decades. Literature continues to discuss these issues, but significant progress toward improvement has not been made. As many other professions have become more gender balanced, men in nursing in the USA still represent a glaringly small minority. The nursing workforce needs to more closely reflect the diversity of its patient populations. Patients deserve and would benefit from diversity of the workforce - including gender diversity.
Larry Benson Massenburg I am very passionate and committed to the future of men in nursing. As a member of AAMN since 2008, I am now seeking an opportunity to serve as a board member at the national level. I believe the culmination of my life and work experiences enable me to advocate for many, who like me, chose nursing as a second career. In light of the multitude of new initiatives the nursing profession faces, I plan to ensure that our prime directive the nurse client relationship is maintained. Furthermore, I believe my experiences as a staff nurse provides an additional lens through which we identify new needs, set priorities, and continue to support the role of men in the nursing profession. Education/Experience Associates of Science in Nursing Degree-Mount Olive College/Watts School of Nursing. BA, Sociology, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ( ). Health and Safety Director/Workplace Specialist, American Red Cross ( ) Member, AAMN since Completed first AAMN Mentoring Program; Staff RN, Oncology/Neuromedicine/Palliative Care, Duke Regional Hospital; Clinical Instructor Associate, Duke Regional Hospital; 2011 and 2012 Nominee Duke Health System Friends of Nursing Awards; Member, North Carolina Nurses Association; May 2013 Graduation Commencement Speaker for Watts School of Nursing The challenges for men in nursing today and the AAMN are similar. We must: 1) Identify and peel off the next layer of the onion of diversity; 2) Recruit and retain membership through continued identification and utilization of new talents that will support and expand, where possible, our purpose. 3) Reduce barriers and social stigmas associated with some areas of clinical practice that have limited entry. I am very fortunate to have joined AAMN as a student nurse. From my very first conference until now I remain encouraged by the quality of leadership, positions on impact, and the number of nontraditional roles men now serve in the nursing profession. Each national conference is informative and provides an intimate setting to meet and discuss nursing concerns.
Mark Romportl RN, BSN As a member of the AAMN board, my background suits me to bring a fresh perspective which meshes clinical practice and academia. While pursuing my Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Minnesota, I also currently work as a staff nurse in Adult Endocrinology. My nursing journey began during my undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin- Madison when I realized how building relationships with residents of an assisted living facility provided me with a way of healing in ways I couldn t have previously predicted. Upon graduation in 2008, I worked on a gastrointestinal surgical floor. Shortly thereafter, I reconnected with an instructor of mine, as we founded the Coulee Region Men in Nursing (CRMN) based out of La Crosse, Wisconsin. Through CRMN, I ve been able to teach the Boy Scout First Aid merit badge representing the organization, win the Best Workplace for Men in Nursing award in 2010, and support the development, recruitment, and retention of men in our profession. As a board member, I hope to support the organization to expose the public similarly to how I have done in the past in order to support the 20 by 20 campaign and mission of the AAMN. Lastly, another unique way I have been actively engaged in the AAMN has been in helping to create the Mentorship Task Force, which began its planning in Although this initiative is new in its development, I have continued to have a passion to give tangible benefits to the members which can aid in their professional development and growth. Having a representative from this task force on the board is crucial to its success. I ve attended three of the past five national conferences, and have enjoyed getting to know the membership and figuring out what direction the organization should go.
Ramesh C. Upadhyaya My name is Ramesh Upadhyaya RN, CRRN, MSN, MBA and I am a candidate for board member of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. I have over 20 years of experience in healthcare, beginning with my first position out of high school as a combat medic in the U.S. Army. I have spent my last twelve years in nursing education and administration. Currently, I work as a Nurse Consultant for the State of North Carolina, Division of Health Service Regulation. I have a bachelor's and a Master s degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Master s in Business Administration from the Bryan School of Business and Economics. As a man in nursing, I have first-hand experience with some of the challenges faced by our profession and our organization. I strongly believe that men can make a significant contribution to the advancement of the profession of nursing, and I believe that involvement in AAMN is a great start. I have been a member of the AAMN for eight years, serving on the communications committee at the national level and chair of the membership committee on a local level. I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the board, and usher in a new era of our organization with the help of new marketing channels such as social media and the world wide web. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our organization in any capacity, and I appreciate your time, consideration, and support in this endeavor. Eric J. Williams DNP, RN, CNE I bring 30 years of nursing experience in practice and education. I have taught in practical/vocational, associate, and baccalaureate nursing programs. In 1986, I earned my BSN from William Carey University. The University of South Alabama awarded my MSN in I earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in As a diverse male nurse, I will bring sensitivity regarding to barriers to success that many diverse counterparts have experienced as they reached their trajectory. Educating other male nurses on how to navigate a system that encompasses issues regarding gender, sexuality, and other biases, is imperative for success. We will help assist them in understanding the culture of nursing. Currently, I serve as a mentor in the AAMN. I will bring previous board experiences, commitment, and service to the American Assembly for Men in Nursing. My vision for growth and progress of our organization will promote an environment to facilitate teamwork and collaboration. We have the potential to influence other male nurses and students to become a part of our organization. Given this quality, I pledge to be an active board member and work to facilitate the mission, goals, and objectives of AAMN. My visionary leadership will enhance the strategic direction of the AAMN. Vote: Dr. Eric J. Williams, Board of Directors. I will be honored to serve this preeminent organization that s a vehicle to maintain inclusivity for men in nursing.
